Prologue

Hey hey, I just want to warn you the first few chapters are set up. Character introductions and history that I oringinally had spread throughout the book but it disturbed the flow so I organized it to be at the beginning. I hope you enjoy the book!

Prologue

--------17 years ago------

{ Kyda }

“I won’t say I told you so.”

I rolled my eyes inwardly and visibly. I knew that this conversation was coming since the event that morning.

“You had no way of truly knowing before today. It was just a hope you had, purely speculation,” I retorted.

“I knew, and now you know. And since we both know, it is time to make decisions,” my mother replied calmly.

I released a sigh I'd been holding in all morning and rubbed my eyes with my thumbs. I knew she was right. As much as I want to shield Netta from the weight of her future, I couldn’t. And with the confirmation of her power came the necessity of hiding it. And there was only one place to do that.

“They don’t know of her, they don’t know I had her. But that makes this harder rather than easier. Moving will not be simple and the process must take place primarily at night. There’s only one person who can help us do this safely.” I told her, beginning the plan.

“Gabryl already knows of her. All we must do is notify him it is time.”

I gaped at her. Her response floored me because it revealed her carelessness.

“Yo-, you told him? You told him I had her AND you told him she was the one? Before confirmation of any true nature?”

“I told you, I knew it was her.” She replied as if it explained the risk she took.

“Mother, you did not know. There was no proof and yet you risked sharing not only her identity but also revealing the laws we have broken and the truth we have hidden?” I asked, feeling the frustration bubble over.

“I told no one but Gabryle, he is our guardian, in order to continue protection over us he needed to know of the continuation of our bloodline and the truth of our latest addition”

“You did not KNOW the truth when you told him!”

“I did Kyda, whether you believe me or not, I did. I delivered that child. I was the first to hold her. I felt her power from the moment my hands touched her small frame and I took her in. It was raw, her power. As sudden as I felt it, she hid it. But it was undeniable.” She replied with a far off look as she remembered back to that day.

As much as I didn’t care for her making plans without my consent I knew that she was telling the truth when she told me this. Since that day all she has said is that Netta was the one. But she never revealed how she knew, where the confidence came from. She had felt her, she had connected with her. It makes sense, in that moment of crossing into Earth side her power would have amplified and she wouldn’t have been able to contain it before Prym felt it. Regardless of those events and the ones since, the truth was undeniable now. And now they had to focus on the trip at hand.

“Please contact Gabryl as soon as possible. The next unscheduled visit could come at any time and we need to make sure we are gone before that day.” I told her.

She looked at me for a moment as if she was surprised I had accepted her revelation so easily. “Agreed, I will get him a message immediately. If you need me I will be in the garden getting the plants I need for the communication. As for you, start preparing. I don’t know what Gabryl will say but I can assume we will be leaving immediately. You best prepare everything you need for yourself and Netta.”

“I will. Do you know where Haven is, mother?”

“You know I don’t, child.”

“Do you know of the weather at least?”

The corners of her mouth turned up as she answered. “I have reason to believe it will be cold. Pack lightly, but pack warmly.”

With that, she walked out the back door. I checked the front windows for any signs of life. Our animals were the only heartbeats I could sense so I relaxed slightly. We lived as far from anyone as we could. With a secret as big as ours, the less neighbors the better. We had no choice but to comply with the laws of the King but we managed to straddle that line quite well. Aside from meeting with the warrior assigned as my breeder when the time came, and additional checkups to confirm if pregnancy had resulted from his visits, our only contact with humans or wolves was with each other. The last checkup was months ago, the King’s men sent to check if a pregnancy had resulted were young and not enforcers. When they arrived, we made sure they understood that a pregnancy had resulted, a pregnancy which I had lost. With a loose enough shirt and the graces of a small bump we played it off quite well. My mother being a doctor, she informed the men to pass along the message that I required at least 6 months to heal properly before another visit from my breeder. They agreed and we received a letter weeks later informing us that I would be given a year before another visit to heal physically and mentally.

Our farm was just big enough for the 3 of us. With a bloodline like ours, a green thumb ran in the family. We grew everything we needed for food, drink and medicine. The animals were for milking and for food and no one asked any questions in the surrounding areas. Out here, we fit in, just enough.

I was born in this cabin. Shortly after it had become only my mother and I. I was raised there and had never left. It broke my heart to think of abandoning our land, their animals who would be set out to roam, no doubt found by someone and brought home, where they would find our note and then be adopted by a neighbor.

I was brought out of my thoughts by the soft cooing from my arms. I looked down at the sweet hazel eyes that held mine. She was beautiful, a spitting image of my mother with the exception of her eyes. Her light brown hair was already long for a baby and her button nose was an inherited trait from her father’s line. Looking at her eyes now I don’t know how I had denied her identity for this long. Her hazel green eyes were just like my mother’s. But this morning as I sat in the garden gathering breakfast, I felt a rush of wind behind me. I turned and I saw my line of carrots uprooted gently and placed into the basket. When I looked down at the sweet baby in my tummy carrier I lost my breath. Her hazel eyes were swirling greens and blues as the breeze blew around us at her command. The abilities could have been mistaken for a random small tornado had it happened to anyone else, but those eyes told the truth. She had created that wind, and only one person had the ability to do that. Only one person had those eyes. And it was my job, to protect her.
