(Selena's POV)

The drive back to Damien's house was quiet, yet my heart pounded like a war drum in my chest. Damien sat beside me, focused on the road with that usual look of indifference plastered across his face.

I turned toward the window, letting my forehead rest against the cool glass as the lights of the city passed us in a blur. But my thoughts stayed rooted in that moment from earlier tonight—my mother’s eyes boring into mine at the entrance of the bathroom.

“You’re pregnant, aren't you?” she had said softly, like she was afraid she might break me.

Those words hit me harder than I expected, as if hearing them out loud confirmed everything I was still trying to deny.

I begged her not to tell anyone. She touched my cheek gently and gave me that look only mothers give when they sense their child is about to fall apart. “You’ll have to tell him eventually,” she said.

She thinks it's Damien's baby and who knows how long before she'll tell my father and then the news gets to Damien as a congratulatory message.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. My heart was racing with fear.

I reached for my phone and opened my messages. My hands trembled as I typed.

Selena: She knows.

I stared at the screen for a second, then added another message.

Selena: My mom knows I’m pregnant and she thinks it's Damien's. What if she tells him? I’m scared, Soph.

The reply came quickly.

Sophia: Oh Sel… Deep breaths, okay? She won’t say anything. And we’ll figure out what to do next. One step at a time.

A tear slipped down my cheek. Sophia has been my lifeline through all of this—the cold silence of this marriage, the days I felt like a ghost and the moment the doctor said the words that changed everything.

Selena: What if Damien finds out? I don’t know what he’ll do.

Sophia: We’ll be ready if that happens. But for now, focus on staying calm. You and the baby need that.

Baby.

It still felt surreal to call it that. This child is growing inside me, demanding to be acknowledged, protected, and loved. I already do love it. In the quiet, hidden parts of my heart, where Luca’s memory lived.

My phone buzzed again, breaking the silence.

Sophia: Don’t forget your first doctor’s appointment is in two days. I’ll come with you if you want.

I closed my eyes, exhaling slowly. That reminder made everything feel even more real.

I'm going to a doctor for prenatal care because I'm pregnant.

I looked down at my still-flat stomach. It was too early to feel anything but I swear I could already sense the gravity of what I was carrying.

The car pulled into the driveway, and Damien cut the engine.

He didn’t say a word. He just got out and started heading toward the house.

I followed a few steps behind, dragging invisible chains with each step. The walls of this mansion felt even colder now. Like they knew the secrets I was keeping and were silently judging me.

We entered through the main hall, and I muttered something about being tired. Damien barely acknowledged me as he headed toward his study. He didn't even spare me a glance or ask about how I was feeling or why I had excused myself from dinner so suddenly.

But then again, why would he care?

I went upstairs to my room and curled up on the bed, holding my phone to my chest like it was the only anchor I have. I didn’t cry, I've done enough of that. I just stared at the ceiling and imagined what life would look like in a few months when my stomach begins to swell and the truth would no longer be hidden.

Would I be gone by then?

Damien would probably kick me out or worse, hurt me.

A chill ran through me at the thought. I didn’t know Damien well enough to predict what he's capable of, but I’ve seen the ruthless glint in his eyes when he talked about business, legacy and power.

And what about Luca?

Did he even think of me? Did he ever wonder what had come out of that night?

He could be anywhere, living his life, unaware of what we created. And somehow, despite everything, I miss him.

I rubbed a hand over my abdomen.

“I’ll protect you,” I whispered. “No matter what.”

The silence of the room answered back.

(Selena's POV)When Damien came home last night, I knew there was going to be a storm. He didn’t even sit down. He just tossed his keys on the marble console and marched into the living room where I sat curled up on the couch, pretending to read a book I hadn’t flipped in over ten minutes. I looked up the moment I heard the edge in his voice.“You walked out of the boardroom like you were a disgruntled intern,” he said, his tone flat but sharp, like the cold edge of a knife grazing skin before the real cut. “Do you know how unprofessional that looked? How insulting it was to me, and this company?”I swallowed hard. My mouth was dry, but I forced myself to respond without trembling.“I wasn’t feeling well,” I said softly. “I didn’t mean to offend anyone.”His eyes narrowed, not in concern but in calculation. “You’ve been acting strange recently, Selena. You’re the Managing Director of a billion-dollar enterprise. You don’t get to check out when you feel like it.”I lowered my gaze.“I’

(Damien's POV)The AI deal has been signed. Novatek is officially integrated into Delacroix-Valenci. My empire's name and vision would now be attached to the next frontier of technological evolution.I saw Selena leave right after the signing. She didn't offer a handshake or even a customary nod of approval to Luca. It didn’t go unnoticed by the board either—I watched as some of them exchanged curious glances, but nobody dared speak. After the meeting, everyone left the boardroom. I tapped my pen against my palm as I walked to my office. I stopped by Selena's office to confront her for leaving the boardroom like that. Her office was locked so I knocked on the door beside hers.“Come in.” The voice inside echoed.I opened the door to find Selena's assistant–I think her name is Claire–typing on her computer. She stood up the moment she saw me.“Where's my wife?” I asked, trying to sound neutral.“Mrs. Delacroix asked me to clear her schedule and said she was taking the rest of the day o

(Selena's POV)I barely made it to my office without collapsing. My heels clicked too loudly on the marble floors, echoing every tremor in my chest. The moment I shut the door behind me, I leaned against it and let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. My legs felt like glass.I stared at my reflection in the glass cabinet across the room—my face looked pale beneath my makeup, my eyes were wild. I look like someone who has just seen a ghost.I blinked, trying to steady myself, and walked slowly to my desk. Claire popped her head in a second later, tablet in hand, chirpy as always.“You have a strategy call with Legal at one, then—”“Cancel everything,” I said, cutting her off. My voice was sharper than I intended, but I didn’t care.Claire blinked. “All of it?”“Yes,” I snapped. “Everything. I need the rest of the day off.”She hesitated only a second before nodding. “Of course. I’ll handle it.”Once she left, I sat behind my desk, my hands trembling as I opened my drawer and pull

(Luca's POV)The boardroom had quieted to a hum of satisfaction, the kind that follows a successful deal. The AI proposal was met with enthusiasm, detailed questions, and swift formality. I finally heard the words I’ve been preparing to hear:“Approved.”Papers were slid across the glass table toward me. My pen hovered briefly because the reason I was truly here—the reason I had pushed so hard for this—was now sitting at the far end of the table, avoiding my gaze like I was a ghost from a life she wanted to forget.Selena.She has not made a move since Damien introduced me as his younger brother. Her reaction made me feel even more guilty.I saw the panic and hurt in her eyes. She looked at me like everything we had shared that night in the cabin was now poisoned.I lied to her that night. I never told her my last name or mentioned that I had a brother, let alone who he was. I knew exactly who she was and wanted to use her as revenge. But I fell in love with her.I looked at her again

(Selena's POV)I thought I had mastered the art of composure—hiding chaos beneath elegance. But the moment Luca walked in behind Damien, my world tilted. For a heartbeat, everything around me faded—the clicking of pens, the shuffling of papers, even the steady voice of Damien greeting the board. My pulse roared in my ears, deafening. He looked exactly the same and yet, entirely different. Tall and rugged in that maddeningly effortless way. His presence filled the room the moment he stepped in, and I saw how some of the women at the table subtly straightened in their seats. But I didn’t have the luxury of subtlety. My breath caught in my throat and my body was frozen in a silent gasp.He didn’t even glance at me at first, he just moved with the poise and confidence of a man who knew what he brought to the table—quite literally. But when our eyes finally met, I looked away first, fast enough that no one noticed. My fingers gripped the armrest of my chair beneath the table, my nails dug

  • His Brother's Bride    Chapter Twenty

(Selena's POV)The morning sun crept in through the curtains with gentleness. I blinked at the ceiling, my thoughts swirling back to the conversation with Sophia. “You need to get Damien to sleep with you.”Her words still echoed, refusing to be silenced no matter how many times I tried to shut them out. It wasn’t just absurd, it felt invasive, cruel even, to consider using my body as a shield against the truth. But what was I to do? I'm already five weeks pregnant. With a long breath, I pushed the duvet aside and forced myself out of bed. I dressed in silence, opting for a soft beige blouse tucked into a high-waisted black pencil skirt. I kept my makeup light, but I dabbed on lipstick a shade bolder than usual, like war paint for a day I already felt ill-prepared for. The red was an armor of sorts—something to remind me I still had power, even if only in appearance.Downstairs, the dining table was already set. I sat and picked at the scrambled eggs on my plate, the scent making my s
