Chapter 4

Author: Stars
After our showers, we hit a snag.

Only two bedrooms on this floor—and three of us.

"Mommy, forget that ugly bat. Sleep with me instead," Mia said, tugging at my skirt, eyes all hopeful.

I crouched down, pinched her cheeks. "Mia, don't diss your dad. He's not ugly at all."

She blinked. "But everyone says we're ugly. They call me a little monster."

I sighed. "Doesn't matter what they say. That kind of talk? Trash. If I ever meet those jerks, they'll find out how sharp my claws are.

"I don't care what you look like to them. To me, you're the cutest little girl ever. So cut it out, alright?"

Mia nodded, then latched onto my leg. "Okay, Mommy. Then I wanna sleep with you! Please!"

Darkblood Count just straight-up scooped her like a kitten and tossed her aside. "You're old enough to sleep alone."

They instantly went full WWE over who got to sleep next to me.

Mia's limbs got snapped, and Darkblood Count's head got kicked around like a soccer ball.

My freshly cleaned room... wrecked.

"Stop!"

They froze, standing like scolded kids.

"If you both wanna sleep with me, fine. We're all squeezing into one bed."

So yeah, we ditched the big bed and piled into the tiny one.

Mia knocked out instantly—probably still full from dinner.

Me? I just kept tossing and turning.

Eventually, Darkblood Count broke the silence. "You can't sleep?"

I shook my head. "No one can. Not here. I'm just... too excited."

He paused.

"I've always been different," I said. "What freaks others out? I think it's beautiful.

"The pack thought I was cursed—called me a freak, kicked me out. But here, with you guys...

"It's the first time I've felt like I belong."

I turned to him, eyes wide and sparkly, flashing a sweet smile. "Thanks. I've seriously never been this happy."

He stared, something shifting in his gaze.

"If you—"

He cut off. 'Stay here' never made it out.

"Oh, right!" I perked up. "I don't even know your name."

His voice dropped, rough. "I don't have one. But... if you want, you can give me one."

I scrunched up my face, thinking. "That's a big deal. Lemme give it some real thought."

In the dark, I saw it—just barely.

The corner of his mouth... lifted slightly, revealing fangs.

The Chat Feed blew up.

[Wait—did he just smile? Darkblood Count SMILED.]

[Okay, this little she-wolf might actually be onto something. No one survives him this long.]

That eerie system voice woke me up again:

[Initial players: 30. Current players: 15.]

One night in, and five were monster food. Three others? They must've gone through something awful. Fear ratings hit 100.

Then I got a message from one of the mages, Mara:

[Yaya, are you okay? I should've warned you. The first three days, you have to bond with your 'family' fast. This is everything I know—take it as an apology for forcing you onto the 30th floor.]

Mara and Kael were always nice to us newbies. Everyone trusted them.

I gave a small smile and typed back:

[Got it. Thanks.]

Darkblood Count was already up. He saw me texting, then paused. "In this place, don't trust—"

His face twisted. He doubled over, clutching his chest, and collapsed.

I lunged forward, catching him before he hit the ground.

The game had rules—NPCs couldn't spill strategies to players. This was the punishment.

At some point, green smoke crept in without warning. The temp plummeted.

I shivered, and he slipped off his cloak, wrapping it around me. "Don't be afraid," he murmured.

Afraid? Not even close. My perception glitch had me kind of... hyped.

"They're back!" Mia yelled. "Grandpa and Grandma are back!"

The door creaked open.

Two shriveled elders shuffled in.

Chat Feed went wild:

[It's them. The revenants. Nobody survives past this.]

[Little wolf, your lucky streak just ran out.]

They crept closer, pupils glowing green like radioactive nightmares.

Then the old man spotted the coat on my shoulders—

Snapped.

"You mangy mutt! That's my son's cloak! Time for a lesson!"

Each door had a player's name on it, with their fear level right underneath.Mine was the only one at zero. The other two? These monsters were adorable. That creepy voice slithered back, this time smug.[So, dear players, would you like to offer the keys to unlock the interworld gate?][You have one last hour, until midnight. After that, you'll be trapped here forever.]I only had one key—the one to my place on the 30th floor.Didn't match. These locks were heart-shaped. Mine didn't fit.I turned to Darkblood Count and grinned."Guess I'm stuck here. Looks like you're stuck with me forever."He crouched, lifted my chin, eyes glowing red."Yaya, did you figure something out? Is that why you're staying? If you do, you'll end up like us—ugly, twisted."I blinked."So? You're not ugly. Don't you love me? Don't you want us to be together forever?"He shook his head."It'

Back on the 30th floor, I shook it off fast and started laughing like nothing happened. The front door? Wide open.Of course it was—hadn't been locked once since I left. They were waiting for me.Inside, every face lit up—smiling, familiar, all ages. The table was packed with food, my favorite tea already steeping. They grabbed my hands, warm and real, squeezing in close."Your two friends came by. We gave them their visit cards.""For today... let's be a real family."It was a day filled with happiness—brief, but precious. After dinner, Revenant Granny flicked her hand, and the sky exploded with shooting stars. They lit up the heavens—and my eyes.I was too stunned to speak. Didn't even notice Darkblood Count wasn't looking at the sky. His eyes were on me. Only me.Then, out of nowhere, he leaned in and kissed my forehead. His face turned bright red, but his gaze dropped to my lips.He paused. "Can I...?"Seriously? Kael and Mara.So the whole time, they'd been playing nice—pretending to be the good guys, earning everyone's trust. But visiting monsters wasn't the only way to get visit cards. Most players didn't have what I had—gear that scared monsters off, hints from the newspapers, or the nerve to talk to the ones that looked like nightmares. So Kael and Mara came up with another method—No monster fights. No risks. Just straight-up robbery. To them, we were walking wallets.Feed us. Keep us comfy. Then wipe us out in one clean sweep. And yeah, in this game, killing other players was totally allowed. What they didn't know? I wasn't just earning trust—I was stacking top-tier gear from monsters who'd literally die for me.They raised their wands. A flash of magic shot at me.Mara sneered. "Hand over the cards, and maybe I'll let you live—for old times' sake. Otherwise? You die here."I smirked. The spell didn't even graze me before it snapped back—hard. Deep gashes tore across their fac

Day Six hit fast.I made it to the 10th floor, visit cards stacked deep. From the 20th down, the monsters got less nightmare fuel and more... tragic. I even ran into two other players. Not friendly, but not dumb enough to mess with me either. Most of the monsters were chill—kind, even. They handed over their visit cards like I was family. The three of us reached the 10th floor together.A unicorn stood there, horn still dripping fresh blood, and gave each of us a card. Then she spoke. "Have you seen my mate?"I froze. No clue who she meant.I stayed quiet. Her eyes flared red. Then she snapped."Why? Why haven't you come yet? I've waited so long!"She charged. That horn? Basically a blade. Aimed straight for my chest.Right before impact, a flash of silver tore through the air. When I blinked, her horn was gone—clean cut.The silver cross Darkblood Count gave me was floating midair, cloaked in black mist like it had a mind of its own.It surged upward, ready to tear he

27th floor.Monster: a short clown. His mouth had been slit ear to ear, stuck in a permanent, twisted grin.I knew what he was—a kid with dwarfism, same as me. Tossed aside for being different. Desperate, he ended up in a circus. They made him a freak show act.To get more laughs, the scumbag ringmaster carved his mouth so he'd always be "smiling."Once he'd made his money, the kid broke his leg on the tightrope. Couldn't perform anymore. So they tossed him into the freezing night like trash. He was only fourteen.I had stronger gear now. He felt it. Didn't dare come close—just curled up, trembling in the corner."Don't... don't hit me... I-I'm sorry... please don't throw rocks..."I'd never seen a monster this scared. It hit me hard.He was crying, but the torn-up corners of his mouth wouldn't let him do it right.I crouched and pulled out a fresh tomato."When I was a kid, they threw stuff at me too. Pebbles, lettuce, rotten eggs. But tomatoes? At least I could eat thos

The four monsters walked me to the edge of Floor 30, clearly not loving the goodbye.I stood there, arms full of high-tier loot, totally overwhelmed. After growing up alone, left out of everything, this was the first time I'd felt what real family warmth was like.Chat Feed was losing it over my haul.[Even pros don't get this kind of gear. How'd a newbie pull this off?!][Jealous. For real. She's really something. Still breathing on Floor 30 AND bagged the boss.][No one's even SEEN this floor before. I'm only getting a look thanks to her.][Other players are fighting monsters—she's adopting them.]I hit the 29th floor and knocked politely.Door creaked open the second I touched it.From what I'd heard, the player here was already dead.Inside stood a woman—well, half woman. Her lower half was pure snake tail.Definitely gave off classic Medusa vibes.Anyone who looked into her eyes would turn to stone, but Mia's magic eyeball had me covered. She noticed the silver cross
