Stepping out of the restaurant, the bitter late-autumn New York wind slapped against my face.

I was already back at my apartment by the time Marcello finally called me back.

"Where are you?" Marcello's voice was laced with arrogant annoyance and demand. "I just got to the restaurant, and the ma?tre d' said you already left. Cora, what kind of tantrum are you throwing now?"

"A tantrum?" I let out a cold laugh. "Marcello, my parents flew halfway across the country to discuss our wedding. They waited for you in that restaurant for three whole hours! You think I'm throwing a tantrum?"

There was a moment of silence on the other end, and his tone softened.

"Someone broke into Valerie's apartment. She was terrified and wouldn't stop crying. I had to stay and calm her down."

"You know I treat her like my own sister."

Valerie.

Always Valerie.

The wealthy heiress he grew up with.

Compared to me, they looked like the perfect match.

I thought about yesterday, when my parents first landed in New York.

I was tied up with a book signing and asked Marcello to send a bodyguard to pick them up at the airport. This was his territory, after all; any of the family's cars could have saved two older people the hassle.

"Cora, they're adults, they can take a cab," he had said, not even looking up. "My bodyguards are for family business, not to act as your parents' personal chauffeurs."

He rejected me flat out.

In the end, I had to swallow my pride and ask a regular friend to pick them up.

It was laughable. I really wanted to ask him—wasn't Valerie an adult, too?

"Marcello..." a sickly sweet, whining female voice suddenly came through the phone, so cloying it made my stomach turn. "I still feel dizzy..."

I heard Marcello hurriedly comfort her, then he rushed back to me: "Anyway, let's just pick another time and restaurant."

"And when we do, make sure your parents have a better attitude. No more tantrums. You know the Commission is already unhappy that I didn't take an arranged marriage..."

I gripped my phone tight and replied:

"Don't bother."

"My parents are heading back in a few days."

Marcello paused for a second, then said smoothly:

"Fine. The wedding is going to follow my family's traditions anyway, so I doubt your parents could offer much advice."

I hung up on him.

I turned around to find my mother standing by the balcony. She pulled me into a gentle hug, her eyes red.

"Cora, don't fight with Marcello because of us."

"As long as he treats you well, that's all that matters. We'll leave right after the wedding, we won't be a burden."

Looking at the new gray hairs at my parents' temples, a sour ache gripped my nose.

I shouldn't let the people who love me suffer humiliation for a man who doesn't.

"Mom, I'm not upset." I forced a bright smile, swallowing all the bitterness. "Actually, I was just about to tell you. My new book deal is finalized. I don't have to stay in New York anymore. In three days, I'm moving back to Texas with you."

"Really?" My dad heard the commotion and walked over, overjoyed.

I nodded firmly:"Really. Go pack your bags."

Watching my parents walk away, relieved and practically skipping to pack their things, I walked over to the trash can.

I looked at the ring on my left hand—the symbol of the Rossi family Don's fiancée.

I took it off.

Maybe it never belonged to me in the first place.

At half-past midnight, Marcello came home.

The heavy stench of whiskey mixed with Valerie's favorite, ridiculously expensive custom iris perfume filled the quiet bedroom.

The mattress dipped sharply.

A pair of arms, strong as iron, wrapped tightly around my waist from behind without warning.

The man's heavy, warm breath brushed intimately against the crook of my neck.

"Why did you go to sleep without me? Couldn't even leave a light on for me?" Marcello's husky voice murmured against my ear, laced with a lazy edge of displeasure.

I never thought I'd see Marcello again. And I definitely didn't expect to see him like this.A year later, under the warm Texas sun, he rolled toward me in a wheelchair. He wore a trench coat, but none of his former swagger remained. He was too thin, his cheekbones jutting out, making his handsome face look somewhat dark and hollow.Seeing me, a flush of color returned to his pale face.Tears shined in his eyes as he spoke, his voice incredibly rough:"Cora...""I had the best designers make the dress you actually wanted.""You didn't like the old ring, so I bought an even better one.""I kicked Valerie out. I swear she'll never set foot in New York or anywhere near us again.""I truly love you. I really want to be your husband.""I thought... I thought you were going to be my wife."I stood there, silent for a moment, before replying:"When my parents traveled halfway across the country to New York to plan our wedding...""I thought I was going to be your wife, too.""Turns out I was

Back at the hospital, Mrs. Rossi stared at her phone, stunned.Beside her, Valerie's shrill crying echoed in the hallway. She looked up and snapped at her with pure disdain:"Marcello is in surgery. He can't see your little act right now, so you can drop it!"Valerie's face stiffened, then she looked at Mrs. Rossi with tear-filled eyes."Mrs. Rossi, what do you mean? I'm just worried about Marcello."Mrs. Rossi looked at her, laughing coldly."You think I can't see through your pathetic acting?""I only favored you and made Cora's life hell because I didn't like her. I thought she had Marcello under a spell.""Looking back, I invited a wolf into my home. And now karma's caught up..."Valerie tried to argue, but the operating room doors swung open.Mrs. Rossi forgot all about her and rushed forward."Doctor! Doctor, how is he?"The doctor pulled off his mask and looked at them."His vitals are stable, but..."Under their tense gazes, the doctor spoke grimly:"But his legs have sustained

My thoughts snapped back from the past. On the phone, his mother's angry shouting had turned into begging:"Cora, it's my fault. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have made things hard for you. But Marcello really cares about you.""You didn't show up to the wedding. Valerie put on the dress he bought for you.""When Marcello saw her, he wrecked the entire venue. Valerie told him you left, and he screamed that he didn't believe it.""He rushed out of the estate like a madman to find you, and then... and then... he got ambushed by a rival family... he was in a terrible car crash...""Right before he passed out, he was calling your name.""Cora, I'm begging you. Just come see Marcello, please?""He... he might not make it this time..."She couldn't speak anymore; only the sound of her painful sobbing came through. I gripped my phone, my knuckles turning white.Just before my nails dug into my palms, someone gently held my hand.I turned and saw the worried looks on my parents' faces. My mo

I cut her off directly:"I've already broken off my engagement with Marcello.""If you need something, go find Valerie.""You always looked down on me anyway, and wanted her to be the Don's wife, didn't you?"On the other end of the line, Mrs. Rossi shrieked with anger:"Cora, what is the meaning of this?!""Do you know how much Marcello gave up for you?""He almost went to war with the entire family just to marry you. Now that he's in trouble, this is your attitude?!"I stayed silent, thinking back to when Marcello and I first got together.Back then, I only thought he was rich; I didn't know he was a mafia boss.Three months into our relationship, a family Underboss came to see me. He didn't do the cliché thing and slide me a check. He just sat there, looked me up and down. Then, he took a drag of his cigar and said elegantly:"Miss Cora, I hear you're from a small town in Texas?""I don't know if you're familiar with the concept of marrying within one's class.""I admit, you're pret

Marcello stood with one hand in his dress pants pocket, silent for a moment before speaking."Didn't you say they were leaving soon? I figured it's better if they don't attend." He said it like it was the most logical thing in the world. "Tomorrow's banquet will be full of mafia elites and political heavyweights. Your parents' country manners wouldn't fit in with that crowd at all."He took a step closer, his tone persuasive. "What if they accidentally offend someone from the Commission? I'm doing this for their own good."I looked at the man in front of me and realized it clearer than ever: he looked down on my parents, and deep down, he probably looked down on me, too."You really are a thoughtful son-in-law," I smirked, offering a smile dripping with sarcasm.I turned around, didn't look at him again, and walked straight into the walk-in closet to keep packing my personal clothes into my suitcase.Marcello followed me in.He seemed to finally notice how abnormally cold I was being.

I practically smashed the doors of the Rossi estate open.In the grand hall, my father lay pale on the sofa, clutching his chest in agony, gasping for air.My mother was on her knees next to him, trembling as she cried."Where is the doctor?!" I rushed over, holding my dad's ice-cold hand with shaking fingers. "I told the assistant my dad has a history of heart issues. There's supposed to be a doctor on site at all times!"My mother sobbed, barely able to speak. "The doctor was here... but... but Marcello called him away..."My heart dropped into a block of ice.Just then, the door to the adjacent room opened.Valerie was leaning softly against Marcello's chest.Marcello was looking down at her hand, his voice gentle. "Does it still hurt?"I stared at them, dead-eyed.My father was out here fighting for his life, and he took the only doctor away to flirt with another woman?Anger completely snapped my sanity.I lunged forward, raised my hand, and slapped him with everything I had.A re
