"My First Ice Cream"

[2006]

Once upon a time...

"Racheeeeeellll... Lenaaaaaa!!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, my small hands gripping the cold iron fence of our front yard as tight as I could.

But they didn't stop. They didn't even look back.

My two older sisters, Rachel and Alena [Lena], just kept going. They pedaled away happily with Karel and Josh — our next-door neighbors, the brother-sister duo who were always part of their gang. I watched their four shadows disappear around the corner at the end of the street, leaving me alone in a cloud of dust.

And then, I broke down.

My tears burst out like a dam that had finally broken. Even though I could no longer see them, I refused to leave the fence. I stood there, sobbing, my cheeks completely soaked with tears of pure anger and sadness. My small chest heaved up and down as I gasped for air between my cries.

In the middle of my dramatic breakdown, I heard footsteps coming from inside the house. It was Mom. She walked towards me with a concerned look on her face.

"That's enough, Tammy. You are still too little to play with them," Mom said softly, trying to coax me. "Why don't you just play with Mama inside the house instead, okay? Come on."

"NOOO! I WANNA GOOO! I WANNA RIDE THE BICYCLEEE!" I screamed hysterically, my cries becoming even louder. My hands clung to the fence even tighter, as if my life depended on it.

"You should be embarrassed, screaming and crying like this. What will the neighbors think?" Mom said gently, trying to reason with me.

"I wanna ride the bicycle with them, I wanna ride the bicycle, waaaaaah..." I screamed again, completely ignoring Mom's words. My whole world felt like it was ending.

"And where do you think you will sit, huh?" Mom teased me with a small laugh, trying to lighten my mood. She reached for my hand, trying to pull me away from the fence. I fought back, resisting as she tried to pull me into the house. "There are four of them and they are already paired up on two bicycles. Do you want to sit inside the bicycle basket? Or do you want Rachel to carry you on her back?"

"You're so mean, Mom!" I shouted, yanking my hand away from hers. I broke free and ran back to the front gate. "I WANNA GOOO! I WANNA RIDE THE BICYCLEEE!"

Mom moved fast. Faster than me. She reached the gate before I did and quickly locked it, sliding the bolt shut with a swift motion.

"Tammy, let's go inside! Don't make me really upset, okay," she said, her voice now much firmer and more serious. "You cannot catch up to them. They are already too far away."

Feeling defeated, furious, and utterly heartbroken, I threw myself onto the cold cement floor right next to the fence. I kicked my little legs wildly in every direction while I continued to sob. This wasn't the first time. My sisters had left me behind many, many times before. They always, always chose to play with Karel and Josh, forgetting all about me, their own little blood sister. I hated it. I hated them so much!

Mom seemed to have finally given up on me. She sighed and walked back into the house, leaving me alone with my tantrum. And that made me even angrier. I don't know how long I poured out all my emotions through my tears, until I felt my face, my eyes, and my head start to throb with pain.

And then, suddenly...

"Tammy, why are you crying out loud?" A soft hand touched my shoulder gently.

I turned my head. I looked up to see who was crouching above me. The moment I saw his face, my crying instantly subsided. I jumped up from the ground and threw myself into his arms.

"Janooo, they left me againnn. Waaah... they are so mean! Waaaah..." I cried into his chest.

Jano's arms wrapped around me, holding me tight. "Shhh, don't be sad. I'm still here, right? Come on, let's just play by ourselves. Do you want to?"

My tears stopped, leaving only small, hiccupping sobs. "P-play... where? Ride... b-bicycle?" I looked up at Jano through my swollen, teary eyes. My skin felt thick and puffy from all the crying.

Jano's hand now gently wiped my wet cheeks, cleaning away my tears. He shook his head slightly. "I don't know. Where do you want to go? We can ride a bicycle, if that's what you want. But let's clean your face first, okay?"

Without waiting, I nodded my head and ran inside the house to wash my face.

Fifteen minutes later, we were sitting together on the low fence in front of the row of shops near the alley of our house. The two of us were happily enjoying a single stick of ice cream together.

"Is it good?" Jano asked, looking at me with a smile.

I nodded my head vigorously while busy licking my ice cream. "Mhm, it's so yummy."

"Want more?"

"Can I?" My eyes stared at Jano full of hope and excitement.

Jano laughed when he saw my expression. His hand playfully tugged at my little ponytail, gently. "Of course, you can. After you finish this one, we will buy another one. But you have to promise me you won't cry like that again, okay? Especially like earlier, lying on the ground."

And that was it. That was my very first ice cream from Jano! At that time, I was only about four years old.

[2020]There was this funny, almost surreal thing that happened one afternoon when me, Yossi, and Ella were hanging out at the food court in one of the malls, killing time before our movie started. We were camped out at a sticky table in the middle of one of those big, air-conditioned malls in Jakarta — the kind where the smell of teriyaki chicken and Cinnabon just hangs in the air forever. My tray still had half a pretzel on it.That's when a guy we had never seen before walked straight up to our table."Heyyy, ladies. Mind if I get to know you?"The three of us looked up at the exact same second. He was tall. Built. Like, obviously-gym-five-times-a-week built, shoulders broad under his tight black t-shirt. But when he spoke, his voice was soft. Almost too soft. Feminine soft.My eyes darted to Ella in a panic. Ella darted to Yossi. Yossi darted to me. We were doing this ridiculous triangle of silent eye-conversation that probably looked insane from the outside. The guy cleared his t

"OH, HERE WITH YOU, NEAR WITH YOU" [2019]I never forgot that little moment. That afternoon, Jano was glued to his laptop — whether he was working on a college assignment, just browsing, or whatever. The moment I walked into his room, he was typing furiously, eyes locked on the screen. Ever since college — hell, ever since high school — we hadn't hung out like we used to. We barely talked, let alone goofed around together. And I hated being ignored like that. He even forgot to wish me a happy birthday, let alone give me a gift, for my seventeenth.Like always, I walked straight into his upstairs bedroom without knocking. This time I barged right up to his desk."What are you so busy with?" I asked, wedging myself behind him, even though his chair was clearly not made for two. So I was plastered to his back like a leech. I rested my chin on his left shoulder and peeked at the laptop screen that had stolen all his attention.Jano jumped when he felt me against his back. His head snappe

"Jealousy"[2014]The first time I ever felt jealous was when Jano was in a senior high school and started hanging around a girl. Maybe he was already dating. I caught him alone with her when I went over to his house to drop off food from my Mom for his family. Our families were that close — our moms loved swapping recipes and sending food back and forth. As I passed the living room at Aunt Elly's — Jano's mom's house — through the open door, I saw two figures sitting close together on the chaise lounge. My feet stopped automatically by the doorway. I saw Jano leaning back holding a magazine, while the girl was draped all over him. Every now and then I heard her giggling. Her hands were busy too — sometimes pinching Jano's arm, sometimes stroking or looping around his shoulders and neck.I quietly walked into the room, joining them uninvited. When she heard my footsteps, the girl next to Jano turned toward me. I caught a flash of confusion on her face. Especially when I walked up to t

"Why Am I So Different?" [2009]On weekends, if he wasn't on duty out of town, Dad would read the newspaper, books, or magazines after breakfast or towards late afternoon. Usually accompanied by a cup of black coffee and snacks that's made by Mom. That Sunday afternoon I saw Dad relaxing in the back porch with a newspaper spread out, there was a cup of coffee still steaming and a plate of boiled cassava on the side table next to the chair Dad was sitting in. I walked towards him timidly."Dad...""Hmm," Dad's answer was only a soft murmur from behind the pages of the newspaper that stretched, blocking our view. Clearly his attention was poured into what he was reading."Why am I different from Rachel and Alena? Why am I dark, curly, ugly?! Am I not you and Mom's child?" I asked softly. The newspaper in Dad's hand went down at super speed. A pair of his eyes behind glasses widened staring at me."WHAT? What did you just say?""Why am I ugly, not like Bari, Rachel, and Lena?" I said wh

"My Tree House" [2009] We had a big tree in our backyard. I have no idea what kind of tree it was, I never bothered to ask. All I knew was that it had a massive, thick trunk with huge, sturdy branches that spread out like giant arms.Once I saw a treehouse in one of the storybooks I was reading, and from that moment on, I wanted one so badly. It must be so much fun to play up there, high above the ground, I thought to myself. So a year ago, I begged my Dad to build me a treehouse on that tree behind our house.Mom said I was a kid with a crazy, wild imagination. Maybe it was because my hobby was reading so many books and comics that made me so imaginative?Dad initially rejected my wish flat out. "What kind of ridiculous request is that, Tamara. You should just play in your room, it's much more comfortable," he grumbled. But after a full package of whining, begging, crying, and finally threatening to go on a hunger strike and a school strike, I finally got that treehouse. Hooraaay!

"My House vs His House"My house and Jano's house were right next to each other. Literally side by side. But we didn't live in one of those modern housing complexes where every single house looks exactly the same, with the same plot of land and the same boring facade. Our neighborhood was different. It was an old residential area that had gone through a long process of modernization and beautification. Every house had its own neat little fence and a tidy trash bin in front of it, and the street in front of our houses was paved smoothly with real asphalt, not just cheap paving blocks.Like most old neighborhoods that weren't built by a big real estate developer, our houses were not uniform at all. So don't be surprised if the size of the land and the architectural style of each house here are wildly diverse and varied. Some houses still maintained their original old buildings — these belong to the original residents who have lived here for decades. Some have been heavily renovated. And
