The staircase seemed endless.

Lyra descended beside her father, while Karl, Lucien, Arnold, Adrian, Caelan, and Master Thorne followed close behind.

No one spoke.

The deeper they went, the colder the air became.

Then Lyra heard it.

A faint heartbeat.

Thump.

She stopped.

Thump.

Karl looked at her.

“You heard it too.”

Lyra nodded.

“The Heart.”

Alaric’s expression darkened.

“Not exactly.”

Lyra turned toward him.

“What does that mean?”

“The Heart of the Moon doesn’t beat like a human heart.”

Another pulse echoed through the chamber.

THUMP.

Alaric looked ahead.

“Something is using it.”

The staircase ended at enormous silver doors.

Four symbols were carved across them.

The Ring of Unity.

The Crown of Winter.

The Tide Crystal.

And the Heart of the Moon.

Lyra touched the first symbol.

The doors opened.

A vast chamber appeared beyond them.

At its center floated a crystal sphere surrounded by silver light.

The Heart of the Moon.

Lyra stared at it.

“So beautiful.”

Master Thorne whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“The Heart was supposed to be hidden beneath the throne.”

Alaric shook his head.

“It was.”

“Then what changed?”

Alaric looked toward Adrian.

“He moved it.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“I had to.”

Lyra’s expression tightened.

“You took the Heart?”

“To protect you.”

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Because someone inside the royal family was helping the Blood King.”

Caelan stepped forward.

“You suspected one of us.”

“I knew.”

Silence.

Lyra looked between the brothers.

“Who?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Then the Heart suddenly flashed.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

“Alaric.”

Everyone froze.

The King stepped toward the crystal.

“Evelina?”

The voice came again.

“You were never supposed to bring her here.”

Alaric looked at Lyra.

“I had no choice.”

The Heart pulsed.

“Then the seal is already broken.”

A crack appeared across the crystal.

Lyra stepped backward.

“What seal?”

Alaric’s face changed.

“The seal protecting the Moon Queen.”

Lyra stared at him.

“I thought Queen Isolde was only a spirit.”

Alaric shook his head.

“She is.”

“Then what is she protecting?”

He looked at the Heart.

“Something trapped inside it.”

Suddenly, the chamber doors slammed shut.

Karl turned.

“Everyone back!”

Dark mist began leaking from the walls.

Lucien raised his weapon.

Arnold moved beside him.

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

“She’s here.”

Lyra looked up.

A silver figure appeared above the Heart.

Queen Isolde.

“You have finally returned.”

Lyra raised her bow.

“Release my family.”

Isolde smiled.

“Your family?”

Her gaze moved toward Alaric.

“Ask your father what he sacrificed to keep you alive.”

Lyra turned to Alaric.

“What did you do?”

He remained silent.

“Father.”

Alaric finally spoke.

“I made a bargain.”

The chamber went still.

“With whom?”

“The Blood King.”

Lyra’s eyes widened.

Karl stepped closer.

“What did he give you?”

Alaric’s voice broke.

“Your life.”

Lyra stared at him.

“In exchange for what?”

Alaric looked at the Heart.

“Mine.”

Before Lyra could respond, the Heart shattered.

A wave of silver energy exploded through the chamber.

Everyone was thrown backward.

When Lyra opened her eyes, the Heart was gone.

In its place stood a dark doorway.

And from inside came a familiar voice.

“Father…”

Lyra froze.

The voice was unmistakable.

It was her own.

But older.

Colder.

A future version of herself stood inside the doorway.

She wore the Moon Crown.

Her eyes glowed silver.

She looked directly at Lyra.

“Do not trust Karl.”

Karl froze.

Lyra stared at the woman.

“Who are you?”

The older Lyra stepped forward.

“I am what happens if you choose the wrong path.”

Then the doorway began closing.

Lyra reached toward it.

“Wait!”

The older Lyra whispered one final warning:

“The person you love will be the one who destroys the Moon Throne.”

The doorway vanished.

Everyone stood in stunned silence.

Karl looked at Lyra.

“Don’t believe her.”

Lyra didn’t answer.

Because beneath the floor…

The Heart of the Moon began beating again.

And this time

it sounded exactly like her heartbeat.
