Bella’s POV

Blood doesn't dry the way people think it does.

I stood over the windowsill staring at the smear—dark sticky, at the edges already fading from the brightness it must have had an hour before.. In that moment with a sudden sick clarity I knew I would remember this exact shade of red for the rest of my life. Just like I remembered the color of the chains that had held the elder in that facility. Same color. Same weight. Same silence.

“It’s not hers " Draven said again as if saying it a

Draven’s POV"You look tired," I said, stepping in front of Bella without quite deciding to. "Guarding a building this size alone must be exhausting work.""Alone." She smiled, the expression pleasant and utterly without warmth, exactly as it had been in the facility corridor hours ago. "You give me too little credit, Draven, and yourselves too much. Did you really believe three unfinished things in the treeline were the whole of what I brought tonight."Something shifted in the shadows behind her, more shapes resolving out of the dark at the edges of the corridor, not creatures this time but people, armed, still, waiting on a word I hoped none of us would give her reason to say."Where are they," Bella said, stepping up beside me despite every instinct in me wanting her a step behind instead. "Jennifer. The elder. Tell us now, and maybe tonight doesn't end the way you're clearly hoping it will.""Such confidence, for someone standing in my building, surrounded by my people, having al

Bella’s POVNot alone turned out to mean three shapes emerging from the treeline, low and wrong, moving with a gait that belonged to nothing I'd ever seen a wolf do."Unfinished shifts," my aunt breathed, already backing us toward better cover. "She warned us. This is what Frey meant."They were wolf-shaped in the way a nightmare is person-shaped, close enough to recognize and wrong enough to make my stomach turn, patches of fur giving way to something smoother and paler in places nature never intended skin to show through like that. Their eyes caught what little moonlight filtered through the canopy, flat and empty in a way that made my skin crawl worse than any snarl could have."How many more of them could be in there," I asked, keeping my voice low."No way to know until we're inside," Draven said. "Which is exactly why we don't waste time out here fighting the ones meant to slow us down instead of stop us.""Positions," he added, sharper now. "Now."We scattered into the formatio

Bella’s POV"Give me the phone," I said, before my aunt had even fully lowered it from her ear."Bella." Draven's hand closed over my wrist, not stopping me, just steadying me. "Whatever she wants, this is her game. Remember that going in.""I know exactly whose game this is." I took the phone anyway, pressed it to my ear, forced my voice into something calmer than I felt. "This is Bella.""There she is." The voice came through pleasant, unhurried, exactly as I remembered it from the darkened facility corridor. "I confess, I wasn't certain you'd take the call. Most people in your position would let someone else absorb the conversation for them.""What do you want.""Direct. I appreciate that about you, genuinely." A pause, and I could almost hear her considering her next words with the same careful precision she brought to everything else. "I want you to understand the shape of tonight before you commit to it. You're planning to come for your two guests. I know this because I know you

Draven’s POVThree words shouldn't have been able to fracture a room the way those three did."She's still breathing." Bella's hand shook as she held the phone out, the light from the screen washing pale across her face. "For now.""They're taunting us," I said, though the words felt thinner than I wanted them to be. "They want us panicked, rushing in before we're ready.""It's working," Bella said. "I hate that it's working, but it's working."I pulled her against my chest, felt the tremor running through her that she'd been holding back all night through sheer will alone, and let her stay there a moment before either of us had to be strong for the rest of the house again."Four hours," I said quietly, into her hair. "We hold to four hours. Whatever they're hoping to provoke, we don't give it to them."Headlights swept across the kitchen window before she could answer, and every head in the room turned toward the sound of tires on gravel outside."That's Ronan," Gordon said, already

Bella’s POVThe face on the screen wasn't Jennifer's, and for one disorienting second I couldn't place why that felt worse instead of better. It was the elder. She sat in a chair, hands bound in front of her, her face bruised in places it hadn't been when Frey walked her to the guest room hours ago. Behind her, tile stretched pale and industrial under harsh fluorescent light, the same pattern my aunt had spent the last hour tracing back to a single facility."They're together," Draven said, voice flat with the effort of keeping it that way. "Wherever Jennifer is, the elder's there too."The video had no sound this time, just twelve silent seconds of the elder staring directly into the camera, something deliberate and steady in her expression despite the bruising, like she was trying to communicate something the video itself couldn't carry."Why send this at all," Thor asked. "If they wanted to scare us, showing Jennifer again would've been more effective. Why the elder instead.""Mayb

Draven‘s POVThe word cut off, and the silence that followed was worse than the sound itself. "Play it again," I said."Draven." Bellas hand found my wrist, gentle urgent. "Maybe we should not not away not until we have had a second to think about what we are looking for.""I know exactly what I am looking for." I forced my voice to be level because I did not want to break in front of everyone standing in this kitchen least of all Jennifer. "I am looking for anything, behind Jennifer. A sound, a light, a reflection, anything that tells us where Jennifer is of just that Jennifer is scared."I played it again. Jennifers face filled the screen, pale a bruise already blooming along one cheekbone Jennifers eyes darting somewhere off camera before the video ended exactly where it had before Jennifers voice snapping off mid-syllable like someone had reached out and simply switched Jennifers volume to nothing.There. Gordon leaned in his finger stopping the video. "Pause it. That background—o
