Zoe

I walk out of his office on legs that do not belong to me. The door clicks shut, and I lean against the cold wall, pressing my palm to my chest. My heart is a caged bird throwing itself against the bars. I can still taste him – whiskey, coffee, and something darker, like the air before a storm. Between my thighs, I am still wet. Still aching. Still hungry.

I squeeze my legs together and bite my lip hard enough to taste copper. This is not supposed to happen. He is my target. The man I was hired to destroy. But my body wants him to push me against this wall and finish what he started. The receptionist looks at me with raised eyebrows. I push off the wall and force my legs to carry me toward the elevator. Each step is a battle. My dress is damp between my thighs, and I pray no one can see.

The elevator doors close, and I lean against the glass. The city drops beneath me. I close my eyes and see his face. The scar through his eyebrow. The hunger behind his cold mask. My nipples tighten at the memory.

What have I done? By the time I reach the lobby, my hands have stopped shaking. I walk outside into cold air that smells like rain. The sky is the colour of old bruises. I pull out my phone. A message from Evelyn Cole. First file tonight. Same place. Do not be late. The words land like stones in my stomach. Fear rushes back, cold and sharp. This is real. If I do not give Evelyn what she wants, my mother dies. I type back with steady fingers. I have something. I will be there.

I put the phone away and started walking. Forty blocks to my apartment. The city blurs past me. I feel like a ghost wrapped in borrowed skin. My mother's photograph burns in my pocket. Twelve million dollars. Three months. And a man who has looked at me like he already owns me.

My apartment is dark and cold when I finally reach it. The radiator clanks its lonely rhythm. The walls are thin enough to hear secrets, and I have too many of my own. I lock the door and lean against it. My mother's photograph sits on the kitchen table, propped against a stack of bills. She is smiling – before the cancer, before the weight loss. She looks like hope. I pick it up and hold it against my chest. "I am going to save you," I whisper. The words feel like stones sinking in deep water.

But even as I say it, my mind drifts back to him. To the way his thumb traced my lower lip. To the heat of his body pressed against mine. I press my palm between my legs, and the pressure sends a shiver through me. I am still wet. Still wanting. Stop it, I tell myself. He is using you. This is a transaction. But transactions do not leave you breathless and aching for more.

I did not sleep that night. I lie in my narrow bed, staring at the ceiling. Every time I close my eyes, I see him. I imagine his hands sliding up my thighs. His mouth on my neck. His voice in my ear. I slip my hand under the waistband of my underwear and touch myself. I am slick, ready. I think of his dark eyes, his sharp jaw. I come apart with his name on my lips, a broken whisper swallowed by the thin walls. Afterwards, I lie in the dark, my body trembling. Tears leak from the corners of my eyes. I am crying because I have never felt so seen and so lost at the same time.

What is happening to me? The parking garage is dark and cold when I arrive that night. The folder is in my hands, thin and white, filled with the fake records Liam gave me. My palms are sweating. My heart is a drum. Evelyn is waiting in a small room on the third floor. Her grey suit is perfect. Her hair is pulled back tight. Her eyes are cold, flat, and then eyes of a woman who has seen too much and felt too little. She smiles, but it does not reach her eyes.

"You have something for me," she says. I hand her the folder. "Old records. Financial transactions. Nothing that will bring him down yet, but it is a start." She flips through the pages. "He is careful." "Yes and you? Is he careful with you?" I keep my face neutral. "He is interested. He watches me. He touches me when he thinks I am not paying attention."

Evelyn looks up, and I see the hunger in her eyes. "Has he kissed you?" "Yes."Good." She closes the folder. "Keep getting close to him. Keep feeding him lies. And when he trusts you, you will find the real file. The one his father died for." I nod and turn to leave, but her voice stops me. "Zoe." I look back.

"Your mother is comfortable. The treatments are going well. But if you fail me, if you betray me, that stops. Do you understand? "I understand." I walk out of the room, down the stairs, through the door, into the cold night air. The car is waiting. Liam is standing outside, his face tight with worry. "You are shaking," he says. "I am cold,"Liar."

He pulls me against him, and I bury my face in his chest. His arms wrap around me, warm and strong. For a moment, I forget about Evelyn. I forgot about the file. I forget about everything except the way his heart beats against my cheek. "I am not going to let her win," he says. "Your mother is going to live. And Evelyn is going to rot in prison." I look up at him. "I know. Because I am not going to let her win either." He kisses me then. Soft. Slow. I taste the promise in it, the future we are fighting for, the love growing between us even though we both know we should not let it.

When he pulls back, his voice is rough. "Let us go home."

I nod, and he helps me into the car. We drive through the dark city, his hand in mine. I do not let go. He is the only thing keeping me sane. But as we pull away, my phone buzzes. A new message. A photograph. My mother is ying on a bed I do not recognize. Tubes in her arms. A black mark crawling up her skin like poison ivy. And a note: Tick-tock, Zoe. The clock is ticking. And Evelyn is done waiting.

LiamThe morning light spills through the kitchen window, casting long golden rectangles across the worn wooden table where Lily sits, her small hands wrapped around a bowl of porridge. She is four now, old enough to hold a spoon without spilling, young enough to still leave a trail of sticky fingerprints on everything she touches. David is beside her, his dark hair a tangled mess, his eyes still heavy with sleep. He is two, and he eats with the focused determination of a child who has not yet learned that food is meant to be savoured, not inhaled.I stand at the stove, stirring a pot of tea, and I watch them. My children. My daughter and my son. The words still feel new, but I still feel like a gift I am not sure I deserve."Papa," Lily says, her voice cutting through the quiet. "Is the baby coming today?"I set down the spoon and crossed it to the table, taking the seat beside her. "Not today, little one. But soon."She frowns, her brow furrowing in a way that reminds me so much of

Zoe The first kick catches me off guard, a tiny fist knocking against the inside of my belly with a force that stops me mid-step. I freeze in the middle of the cottage kitchen, my hand flying to my stomach, my breath catching in my throat. For a moment, I think I have imagined it. Then it comes again—a soft but insistent flutter, like the brush of butterfly wings against my skin. I stand there, frozen, my palm pressed flat against the curve of my belly, and I feel a smile spread across my face. She is moving. Our daughter is moving. "Liam," I call out, my voice trembling with a joy I cannot contain. "Liam, come here." He appears in the doorway, his dark eyes sharp with concern, his hands still damp from the dishes he has been washing. "What is wrong?" "Nothing." I reach for him, pulling his hand to my stomach. "Feel." His brow furrows, and I see the hesitation in his gaze, the fear that he might not feel what I feel. Then the flutter comes again, a soft kick against his pal

Liam The wooden slats are smooth beneath my fingertips, each one sanded and polished until the grain catches the light like threads of gold. I step back from the crib, wiping a smear of sawdust from my forehead, and I let myself feel the weight of what I have just done. This crib is not just furniture. It is the first piece of a life I am building with my own hands. Zoe is asleep in the other room. I left her an hour ago, her hand resting on the swell of her belly, her breathing slow and steady. She has been exhausted lately, her body working double-time to grow the life inside her. I watch her sometimes when she sleeps, marveling at the quiet strength she carries so effortlessly. She does not know how beautiful she is in those moments, how the sight of her fills me with a fierce, protective love. I move to the window and push it open, letting the cool afternoon air sweep into the room. Outside, the garden is alive with color, the tulips finally in full bloom. Red and gold and purp

  • I Was Hired To Seduce My Boss    Chapter 100: Family Grows

ZoeThe nursery walls are the colour of fresh cream, soft and warm, catching the afternoon light that spills through the window like liquid gold. I stand in the centre of the room, my hands resting on my stomach, watching Liam wrestle with the crib instructions spread across the floor like a paper puzzle he is determined to solve. His brow is furrowed, his lips pressed into a thin line of concentration, and I bite back a smile as he mutters something under his breath that sounds suspiciously like a curse."You know," I say, my voice light, "you could ask for help."He looks up, a screwdriver clutched in one hand, his dark hair falling across his forehead. "I am not asking for help. I am winning.""You are losing.""I am strategizing."I laugh, the sound filling the empty room, and I feel a warmth spread through my chest that has nothing to do with the sun filtering through the glass. This is what we have built. This is what we have fought for. A home. A family. A future.Eleanor appea

  • I Was Hired To Seduce My Boss    Chapter 99: Crown of Us

Liam The wooden box sits on the table between us, its surface worn smooth by years of handling, its contents finally at rest. I trace the edge of the lid with my finger, feeling the grain of the wood, the small imperfections that tell the story of its journey. Inside are the letters, the photographs, the fragments of a past that no longer hold power over us. Zoe is beside me, her hand resting on the box, her grey eyes fixed on the closed lid. She does not speak, but I feel the weight of her presence, the quiet strength of her companionship. We have been through so much together, have carried so many burdens, and have uncovered so many secrets. And now, we are finally ready to set them down. "Liam," she says, her voice soft. "What happens now?" I turn to look at her, at the woman who has become my reason, my purpose, my home. "Now we live. We build. We choose who we want to be." She meets my gaze, her grey eyes steady. "And who do you want to be?" I reach out and take her hand, m

  • I Was Hired To Seduce My Boss    Chapter 98: Garden's Promise

ZoeThe flour dusts my fingers like fine snow as I press my palms into the soft dough, folding and turning, feeling the elasticity build beneath my touch. The kitchen is warm, the fire crackling softly in the hearth, and the scent of yeast and woodsmoke mingles in the air. Outside the window, the garden stretches toward the grey sky, its bare soil waiting for the seeds we have not yet planted.Eleanor sits at the table, her needles clicking a steady rhythm, a half-finished blanket pooling in her lap. She has been knitting for weeks now, working on something she refuses to describe. I have stopped asking. Some mysteries are better left unsolved until they are ready to be revealed."You have a gentle hand," she says, her gaze fixed on her work. "Your grandmother had the same touch. She could make bread rise with nothing but patience and warmth."I smile, shaping the dough into a smooth ball. "I never knew her.""She would have loved you." Eleanor looks up, her grey eyes soft. "She would
