Vespera "Vesper" Ashford

The stench of antiseptic and burnt insulation was the first thing that clawed its way into my senses.

I opened my eyes, but the world was nothing more than a blur of harsh fluorescent lights and the rhythmic, agonizing beep... beep... beep of a heart monitor. My head throbbed as if someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull.

"Ms. Ashford? Can you hear me?"

A face hovered above me. A man in a dark suit. Not a doctor. The sharp line of his jaw and the cold, unblinking glare gave him away instantly. Federal badge clipped to his belt.

"Where... where is Marcus?" My voice sounded like gravel grinding together.

Marcus Vance. My mentor. The man who had trained me to follow paper trails that the world's most dangerous cartels and tech moguls tried so desperately to hide. We were supposed to cross-reference the offshore ledgers tonight. We were so close to unraveling the multi-billion-dollar laundering network operating right out of Manhattan.

The agent didn't offer a shred of sympathy. He pulled up a chair, the metal legs scraping against the linoleum floor with a screech that sent a fresh wave of pain through my temples.

"Marcus Vance is dead, Vesper," he said flatly. "Found him in the basement of your brownstone. Gunshot to the back of the head."

The room tilted. Dead? No. Marcus was supposed to meet me at the safehouse.

"The fire?" I choked out, trying to sit up, but a sharp spike of agony in my ribs pinned me back to the mattress.

"Your house burned to the ground. Total loss. Drives, hard drives, server racks—all ash." The agent leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "And here's the funny thing, Vesper. The fire marshals found acceleration patterns starting right from your home office. The front door was locked from the inside. Your prints were all over the empty kerosene cans in the alley."

What?

Is he out of his mind? I didn't burn down my own house. Why would I destroy the very evidence we spent three agonizing years gathering?

"Wait..." My entire body went cold. "You think I did this?"

"You were the only one who survived," he said coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs from his jacket. "The paper trail for the missing forty million dollars from the audit account leads straight to a shell company under your mother’s maiden name. Marcus found out, didn't he? So you silenced him, burned the evidence, and set the place ablaze to cover your tracks. Only you didn't jump out the window fast enough."

Bastard.

I was framed. It was a setup—a clean, surgical wipeout. The real masterminds didn't just want the evidence destroyed; they needed a scapegoat. Someone credible enough to take the fall so the investigation would die with Marcus. And they picked me.

"I didn't kill him," I rasped, my vision swimming with heat and rage. "Check the server logs! Check the encrypted cloud backups!"

"We did," the agent replied, standing up. The heavy clink of the handcuffs echoed in the sterile room. "Everything is gone. You're under arrest for grand larceny, arson, and first-degree murder."

My brain screamed at me: Move. You need to move right now. If I let them lock me in a cell tonight, I will never walk out alive. Whichever Syndicate or corporate ghost killed Marcus has the feds in their back pocket. High-society criminals don't leave loose ends.

"I... I think I'm going to throw up," I muttered, pressing a hand to my stomach and slumping sideways.

The agent groaned, stepping closer to reach for the basin beside the bed. "Don't you dare—"

That second of distraction was all I needed.

I grabbed the heavy glass water pitcher from the bedside tray and slammed it straight into the side of his face. It shattered. The agent stumbled back with a muffled grunt, blood spurting from his nose.

Before he could recover, I ripped the IV line straight out of my arm. The sharp sting barely registered through the adrenaline surging in my veins. Barefoot, wearing nothing but a thin hospital gown stained with soot, I lunged past him, threw the door open, and bolted down the corridor.

"Officer down! Escaped suspect!" his voice boomed behind me.

Alarms started blaring throughout the floor. Red emergency lights flashed, casting bloody reflections on the white walls. I couldn't feel the freezing floor beneath my feet or the stinging cuts across my skin anymore. I shoved past nurses, ignored the screaming orderlies, and ducked straight into the service stairwell.

I took the stairs three at a time, my lungs burning, heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

When I burst through the emergency exit into the freezing New York rain, the cold hit me like a physical blow. Downpours washed away the smell of smoke, but it couldn't wash away the terror clutching my throat.

I stood at the edge of the alley, soaked to the bone, penniless, shoeless, and without a single friend left in this world. My phone was gone. My identity was erased. My mentor was dead, and every law enforcement agency in the state was about to put a bounty on my head.

I shrank back into the shadows of the alley as a police cruiser sped past, sirens wailing into the night sky.

I was officially a ghost. A hunted, penniless fugitive framed for murder.

Wiping the rain and blood from my eyes, I pulled the damp hospital gown tighter around myself and started running into the dark, relentless streets of the city. I had no idea where I was going, but one thing was certain: the people who framed me thought I was down for the count. They thought I was weak.

They were wrong. I just needed to survive long enough to make them pay.

Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe morning sun pierced through the tinted glass of Caspian’s Tribeca penthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished concrete floors.I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest suite, staring at a woman I barely recognized. The soot and dried blood were gone, replaced by a tailored ivory pantsuit that clung perfectly to my frame. My hair was styled into sleek burgundy waves, and a pair of designer frames rested on the bridge of my nose. Beneath the foundation and high-end silk, my ribs still throbbed, and my left hand was tightly bandaged, hidden under the long sleeve of my blazer.I took a slow, steadying breath. Yesterday, I was a hunted fugitive running barefoot through Chinatown. Today, I was Vespera Vane—Caspian Kensington’s newly appointed Chief Risk Consultant. The door behind me clicked open. Caspian stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a dark navy Tom Ford suit. His gaze swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a sec

Fl: Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe dark blue passport felt heavy in my palm, its crisp gold-embossed crest shining beneath the sleek ambient lighting of Caspian’s Tribeca penthouse. I flipped it open with my uninjured hand.Vespera Vane. The photo was unmistakably me, yet completely altered. My dark hair had been digitally smoothed and tinted a rich burgundy shade, my sharp cheekbones accentuated, and my tired eyes polished into a cool, calculating stare. Attached to the inner page was a flawless paper trail: a decade’s worth of high-profile auditing records across London, Zurich, and Singapore."You had this prepared before you even tracked me down in Chinatown," I said, my thumb tracing the smooth laminate of the forged document."I don't leave my survival to chance, Vesper. Neither should you," Caspian replied without turning away from the rain-slicked glass overlooking Manhattan. "In seven hours, the executive board of Kensington Financials convenes for an emergency session. They ex

Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe violent sound echoed off the damp brick walls, shattering the dead silence of the alley.I winced, bracing for the burning impact of a bullet, but the weight pressing down on my forehead suddenly vanished. The man above me pitched forward, dropping like a sack of stones onto the pavement right beside me. Blood pooled instantly around his neck. The second shooter spun around, pulling his weapon, but a shadow stepped out from the far end of the passage. Two quick, suppressed shots rang out—thwip! thwip!—and the second gunman crumpled to his knees before collapsing face-first into the mud.My breath hitched in my chest. I scrambled backward until my back hit the cold chain-link fence, my whole body trembling uncontrollably.Who is this? Police? FBI? Or another hit squad?Heavy, measured footsteps approached through the fog. Out of the darkness walked a tall figure wrapped in a sharply tailored charcoal coat, completely unfazed by the corpses at his feet. The

That’s how long I’d been living like a rat in the underbelly of Manhattan. The freezing October rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a bitter, bone-chilling fog that rolled off the Hudson River. I crouched behind a row of rusted dumpsters in a Chinatown alley, my arms wrapped tightly around my chest. I had managed to steal an oversized black hoodie and a pair of worn-out sneakers from a laundromat basket yesterday, but they did little to keep out the damp cold.My stomach let out a sharp, painful growl. I hadn't eaten a solid meal since the night Marcus died.Think, Vesper. There has to be a way out of this.I pulled my knees to my chest, trying to stop my body from shaking. Every bank account registered under my name was frozen—I’d checked at an ATM down on Canal Street using my primary debit card, only for the machine to swallow the plastic whole and display a red ACCOUNT SUSPENDED notice. My emergency stash, my backup fake IDs, my har
