Fl: Vespera "Vesper" Ashford

The dark blue passport felt heavy in my palm, its crisp gold-embossed crest shining beneath the sleek ambient lighting of Caspian’s Tribeca penthouse. I flipped it open with my uninjured hand.

Vespera Vane.

The photo was unmistakably me, yet completely altered. My dark hair had been digitally smoothed and tinted a rich burgundy shade, my sharp cheekbones accentuated, and my tired eyes polished into a cool, calculating stare. Attached to the inner page was a flawless paper trail: a decade’s worth of high-profile auditing records across London, Zurich, and Singapore.

"You had this prepared before you even tracked me down in Chinatown," I said, my thumb tracing the smooth laminate of the forged document.

"I don't leave my survival to chance, Vesper. Neither should you," Caspian replied without turning away from the rain-slicked glass overlooking Manhattan. "In seven hours, the executive board of Kensington Financials convenes for an emergency session. They expect me to address the three-hundred-million-dollar anomaly that your late mentor uncovered."

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. Hearing Marcus mentioned brought the dull, suffocating ache back to my chest, but I forced it down. Grief was a luxury I couldn't afford tonight.

"And who on that board is pulling the strings?" I walked up beside him, keeping a cautious two feet of distance. "You said someone used your master encryption keys to clear the offshore transfers. That isn't something an entry-level analyst pulls off. That takes high-level clearance."

Caspian took a slow, deliberate sip of his bourbon. The golden liquid caught the reflection of the city lights outside.

"There are only two people who hold secondary override keys to the core server," he said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "Arthur Sterling, our vice chairman and my father’s oldest business partner, and Sterling’s chief operating officer, Jonathan Hayes."

"Hayes," I muttered, memory firing instantly. "When I was digging through the quarterly ledgers, every routing request under the Cayman shell companies was stamped with an anonymous proxy IP. But the secondary validation always hit the mainframe at precisely 4:15 AM on the first Tuesday of the month."

Caspian glanced down at me, a sharp glint of approval flashing in his dark eyes. "Which happens to be ten minutes after Hayes completes his weekly server maintenance check."

"He isn't just laundering money, Caspian," I realized, the adrenaline spiking through my system again. "He’s actively framing you to force a hostile takeover. If the federal indictment lands on your desk, the board will vote you out using the morality clause in your contract. Arthur Sterling steps in as interim CEO, Hayes takes control of the digital reserves, and the cartel gets a permanent, unraceable pipeline through your infrastructure."

"And the only missing piece of their narrative was you," Caspian added softly. "A dead rogue accountant makes for a very convincing, silent scapegoat. A living, breathing Vespera Vane who walks into the boardroom on my arm ruins the entire fairytale."

"They’ll try to kill me the moment they see me," I pointed out, staring straight into his unyielding eyes. "They already sent two armed men into an alley tonight. What makes you think they won't put a target on my back inside your own headquarters?"

A slow, cold smirk touched the corner of Caspian's lips. He set his empty glass on the marble counter and turned to face me fully, his broad shoulders blocking out the city skyline behind him.

"Because inside Kensington Financials, every square inch of space is monitored by my private security detail," Caspian said, leaning down slightly until his face was mere inches from mine. "And more importantly, you won't be out of my sight for a single second. You walk where I walk. You sit where I sit. You are my personal advisor—and under corporate protocol, your protection falls directly under my personal security budget."

The proximity made my chest tighten, but I didn't back away. "A fake identity, a target on my back, and a billionaire boss who uses me as a chess piece. Sounds like a dream job."

"It pays five million dollars into an offshore account the moment we expose Hayes," Caspian countered smoothly, extending his hand toward me once more. "Do we have a deal, Ms. Vane?"

I looked down at his broad, calloused hand. I was terrified, bloodied, and hunted by both the law and the underworld. But looking at Caspian Kensington, I knew one thing for certain: he was far more dangerous than anyone waiting for me in the shadows.

I placed my hand in his, feeling the firm, warm strength of his grip.

"We have a deal, Mr. Kensington," I said softly. "Now show me to the guest room before I bleed on your marble floors."

Caspian’s dark eyes flashed with something unreadable—a flicker of admiration wrapped in sheer dominance. He released my hand and stepped back, gesturing toward the hallway.

"Get some rest, Vesper. Tomorrow, we go to war."

Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe morning sun pierced through the tinted glass of Caspian’s Tribeca penthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished concrete floors.I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest suite, staring at a woman I barely recognized. The soot and dried blood were gone, replaced by a tailored ivory pantsuit that clung perfectly to my frame. My hair was styled into sleek burgundy waves, and a pair of designer frames rested on the bridge of my nose. Beneath the foundation and high-end silk, my ribs still throbbed, and my left hand was tightly bandaged, hidden under the long sleeve of my blazer.I took a slow, steadying breath. Yesterday, I was a hunted fugitive running barefoot through Chinatown. Today, I was Vespera Vane—Caspian Kensington’s newly appointed Chief Risk Consultant. The door behind me clicked open. Caspian stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a dark navy Tom Ford suit. His gaze swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a sec

Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe violent sound echoed off the damp brick walls, shattering the dead silence of the alley.I winced, bracing for the burning impact of a bullet, but the weight pressing down on my forehead suddenly vanished. The man above me pitched forward, dropping like a sack of stones onto the pavement right beside me. Blood pooled instantly around his neck. The second shooter spun around, pulling his weapon, but a shadow stepped out from the far end of the passage. Two quick, suppressed shots rang out—thwip! thwip!—and the second gunman crumpled to his knees before collapsing face-first into the mud.My breath hitched in my chest. I scrambled backward until my back hit the cold chain-link fence, my whole body trembling uncontrollably.Who is this? Police? FBI? Or another hit squad?Heavy, measured footsteps approached through the fog. Out of the darkness walked a tall figure wrapped in a sharply tailored charcoal coat, completely unfazed by the corpses at his feet. The

That’s how long I’d been living like a rat in the underbelly of Manhattan. The freezing October rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a bitter, bone-chilling fog that rolled off the Hudson River. I crouched behind a row of rusted dumpsters in a Chinatown alley, my arms wrapped tightly around my chest. I had managed to steal an oversized black hoodie and a pair of worn-out sneakers from a laundromat basket yesterday, but they did little to keep out the damp cold.My stomach let out a sharp, painful growl. I hadn't eaten a solid meal since the night Marcus died.Think, Vesper. There has to be a way out of this.I pulled my knees to my chest, trying to stop my body from shaking. Every bank account registered under my name was frozen—I’d checked at an ATM down on Canal Street using my primary debit card, only for the machine to swallow the plastic whole and display a red ACCOUNT SUSPENDED notice. My emergency stash, my backup fake IDs, my har

Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe stench of antiseptic and burnt insulation was the first thing that clawed its way into my senses.I opened my eyes, but the world was nothing more than a blur of harsh fluorescent lights and the rhythmic, agonizing beep... beep... beep of a heart monitor. My head throbbed as if someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull."Ms. Ashford? Can you hear me?"A face hovered above me. A man in a dark suit. Not a doctor. The sharp line of his jaw and the cold, unblinking glare gave him away instantly. Federal badge clipped to his belt."Where... where is Marcus?" My voice sounded like gravel grinding together.Marcus Vance. My mentor. The man who had trained me to follow paper trails that the world's most dangerous cartels and tech moguls tried so desperately to hide. We were supposed to cross-reference the offshore ledgers tonight. We were so close to unraveling the multi-billion-dollar laundering network operating right out of Manhattan. The agent didn't offer
