The morning sun pierced through the tinted glass of Caspian’s Tribeca penthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished concrete floors.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest suite, staring at a woman I barely recognized. The soot and dried blood were gone, replaced by a tailored ivory pantsuit that clung perfectly to my frame. My hair was styled into sleek burgundy waves, and a pair of designer frames rested on the bridge of my nose. Beneath the foundation and high-end silk, my ribs still throbbed, and my left hand was tightly bandaged, hidden under the long sleeve of my blazer.
I took a slow, steadying breath. Yesterday, I was a hunted fugitive running barefoot through Chinatown. Today, I was Vespera Vane—Caspian Kensington’s newly appointed Chief Risk Consultant.
The door behind me clicked open. Caspian stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a dark navy Tom Ford suit. His gaze swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a second on the sharp line of my jaw before locking onto my eyes.
"You clean up well, Ms. Vane," he said smoothly, tossing a sleek black leather briefcase onto the bed. "Inside, you'll find an encrypted tablet, your new credentials, and an earpiece connected directly to my private security channel."
I picked up the earpiece, fitting the tiny device into my ear. "Are we expecting trouble at headquarters?"
"At the headquarters of a fifty-billion-dollar enterprise where half the board wants me deposed and the other half wants you dead?" Caspian’s lips curved into a dark, razor-thin smile. "I’d be disappointed if we didn't."
Ten minutes later, we were in the back of an armored Maybach, flanked by two black SUVs filled with armed security detail. The rain had cleared, leaving Manhattan glistening under a crisp autumn sky. As we pulled up to the soaring glass tower of Kensington Financials on Wall Street, a sea of reporters and photographers swarmed the barricades outside.
FLASH! FLASH! FLASH!
The bright lights pulsed through the dark windows.
"The media is having a field day with the fugitive story," I noted, watching a television monitor mounted on the building's facade. My old mugshot was displayed prominently alongside bold red headlines: WHERE IS VESPER ASHFORD?
"Let them talk," Caspian said calmly as the car rolled into the private subterranean garage. "The loud noise distracts them from what we’re about to do inside."
The elevator ride to the top floor was silent and swift. When the double steel doors opened onto the executive boardroom floor, the tension in the air was thick enough to choke on.
Two dozen board members in bespoke suits were gathered around a massive mahogany conference table, murmuring hushedly among themselves. At the far end of the room sat two men who immediately caught my attention: Arthur Sterling, the gray-haired, stern-faced Vice Chairman, and Jonathan Hayes, the Chief Operating Officer whose pale blue eyes flashed with instant hostility the moment Caspian stepped inside.
"Caspian," Arthur Sterling began, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "It’s about time. The federal auditors are calling every hour, and the media is tearing our stock price to shreds over this Vesper Ashford scandal. We need to issue a statement scapegoating the firm she worked for and—"
Arthur stopped mid-sentence. His eyes widened as his gaze shifted from Caspian to me, standing firmly at Caspian’s right side.
The entire boardroom fell dead silent.
Jonathan Hayes slowly stood up from his chair, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table. His eyes locked onto my face, scanning my features, searching for the ghost of the terrified accountant his mercenaries were supposed to execute in an alley eight hours ago.
"Who is this?" Hayes demanded, his voice laced with a forced, defensive edge. "Caspian, this is a closed executive emergency meeting. Why are you bringing outsiders into—"
"This is Vespera Vane," Caspian interrupted, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority that instantly commanded the room. He didn't wait for an invitation; he walked straight to the head of the table and pulled out the leather chair at the head of the room, motioning for me to sit right beside him. "Ms. Vane is our new Chief Risk Consultant, hired out of London to conduct a complete, independent forensic overhaul of our offshore reserves."
A wave of low murmurs rippled through the room.
"Absurd!" Arthur Sterling slammed a heavy hand on the table. "We already have an internal compliance team! We don't need a foreign auditor poking around our books during a federal crisis!"
"Your internal compliance team missed a three-hundred-million-dollar discrepancy over the last four quarters, Arthur," Caspian replied coldly, resting his hands on the back of his chair and leaning forward. "Ms. Vane found it within twenty minutes of examining the server logs this morning."
I opened the briefcase, pulled out the encrypted tablet, and tapped the screen. The massive digital display behind Caspian flickered to life, displaying a complex, sprawling network of financial routing paths highlighted in glowing neon red.
"Gentlemen," I spoke up, my voice steady, projecting across the quiet room with absolute clarity. "Over the past twelve months, three hundred million dollars was systematically siphoned out of Kensington Financials' primary vault accounts. It wasn't stolen by an outside hacker, nor was it taken by the late Marcus Vance or his associate, Vesper Ashford."
I glanced directly at Jonathan Hayes, watching a bead of cold sweat form at his temple.
"The transfers were executed from within this very building," I continued smoothly, bringing up a detailed transaction log. "Using a secondary executive override key registered under the COO’s private credentials."
"This is outrageous!" Hayes shouted, his face turning pale as he pointed a finger at me. "You walk in here with zero background, throwing around wild accusations! Caspian, she’s setting us up! How do we even know who this woman really is?"
"She is the person who just saved this company from a federal indictment, Jonathan," Caspian said, his dark eyes locking onto Hayes like a predator sizing up its prey. "Unless, of course, you’d prefer I hand these server logs directly to the Department of Justice right now?"
Hayes opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. The rest of the board members were staring at him in horror as the realization began to sink in.
Suddenly, my earpiece crackled with static. Viktor’s urgent voice cut through the line: "Boss, we’ve got a breach. Three unidentified armed men just bypassed the lower lobby security elevators. They’re heading straight for the executive floor."
My heart slammed against my ribs. They realized Hayes was exposed. They’re cleaning house.
I caught Caspian’s eye and gave him a single, subtle nod.
Caspian didn't flinch. Without breaking stride, he calmly reached beneath his tailored jacket, pulled a sleek, suppressed firearm from his shoulder holster, and laid it flat on the mahogany table right in front of him.
The board members gasped, several of them scrambling back in their chairs in absolute terror.
"Meeting adjourned," Caspian said softly, his eyes never leaving Hayes’ panicked face.
Before anyone could react, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom shattered inward with a deafening CRASH. Armed men in tactical gear burst through the entryway, weapons raised.
"Get down!" Caspian roared, grabbing my arm and pulling me forcefully behind the reinforced marble podium as the first wave of gunfire tore through the air, shattering the floor-to-ceiling windows and turning the pristine corporate boardroom into an absolute warzone.
Glass rained down around us like falling crystal. I crouched low, my blood pumping with pure adrenaline as Caspian shielded my body with his own, his gun raised, ready to tear through anyone who dared step closer.
The fight for my life—and the truth—had only just begun.

That’s how long I’d been living like a rat in the underbelly of Manhattan. The freezing October rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a bitter, bone-chilling fog that rolled off the Hudson River. I crouched behind a row of rusted dumpsters in a Chinatown alley, my arms wrapped tightly around my chest. I had managed to steal an oversized black hoodie and a pair of worn-out sneakers from a laundromat basket yesterday, but they did little to keep out the damp cold.My stomach let out a sharp, painful growl.
