Vespera "Vesper" Ashford

The violent sound echoed off the damp brick walls, shattering the dead silence of the alley.

I winced, bracing for the burning impact of a bullet, but the weight pressing down on my forehead suddenly vanished. The man above me pitched forward, dropping like a sack of stones onto the pavement right beside me. Blood pooled instantly around his neck.

The second shooter spun around, pulling his weapon, but a shadow stepped out from the far end of the passage. Two quick, suppressed shots rang out—thwip! thwip!—and the second gunman crumpled to his knees before collapsing face-first into the mud.

My breath hitched in my chest. I scrambled backward until my back hit the cold chain-link fence, my whole body trembling uncontrollably.

Who is this? Police? FBI? Or another hit squad?

Heavy, measured footsteps approached through the fog. Out of the darkness walked a tall figure wrapped in a sharply tailored charcoal coat, completely unfazed by the corpses at his feet. The dim streetlight illuminated a sharp, angular jawline, dark ruthless eyes, and raven hair brushed neatly back.

Caspian Kensington.

The tech billionaire CEO whose offshore accounts I had been illegally auditing for the past three months. The main subject of my investigation.

He stood over me, his dark eyes scanning my torn hoodie, my dirt-smeared face, and my bleeding, crushed hand. In his right hand, he casually held a sleek matte-black firearm, smoke still faintly wafting from the barrel.

"You look terrible, Ms. Ashford," Caspian said, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the freezing air like a razor. He lowered the gun and clicked the safety back on with a quiet, practiced flick of his thumb.

I stared at him, my brain struggling to process the scene. "You... you shot them."

"Clearly," Caspian replied, slipping the weapon smoothly inside his coat pocket. "Unless you prefer I let them put a bullet through your skull."

"Why are you here?" I demanded, my voice raw and shaky as I tried to pull myself up against the fence. The pain in my left hand made my vision blur with black spots. "How did you find me? Were you tracking me?"

"You're not as invisible as you think, Vesper," he said, stepping closer. The faint scent of expensive cedarwood and silver oak drifted toward me, wildly out of place in this filth-ridden alley. "And frankly, watching you wander around Manhattan like a wounded animal for the last two days was getting painful to watch."

I frowned, a sharp glare cutting through my exhaustion. Anger instantly surged through the terror, warming my freezing blood. "You watched me? While I was nearly dying of hunger and freezing to death?"

"I had to make sure you were actually running from the real threats and not setting up an ambush," Caspian said coldly, offering no apology whatsoever. "Your mentor is dead. Your house is ash. Your picture is plastered across every news station in the state as a fugitive murderer. You're completely out of moves."

I gritted my teeth, ignoring his outstretched hand and forcing myself to stand on my own two feet. My knees wobbled dangerously, but I refused to show weakness in front of him.

"I don't need your commentary, Kensington. If you're here to turn me in or finish what your shady offshore partners started, just do it."

Caspian let out a low, humorless chuckle. "If I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have wasted three custom rounds on those mercenaries. And if I wanted to turn you in, the feds would already have you in a holding cell."

He stepped up right in front of me, his towering presence casting a long shadow over the alley. Up close, his expression was entirely unreadable—calm, calculating, and dangerously sharp.

"The people who killed Marcus Vance are the same people trying to strip my company from the inside," Caspian said softly, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "They framed you because you found the ghost trail in the ledgers. The trail that leads directly to the shadow accounts within Kensington Financials."

I froze. "You know about the ghost accounts?"

"I built the architecture, Vesper. I know every single line of code in my system," he replied. "I knew you were auditing me three weeks ago. I let you keep digging because you were finding backdoor routes even my internal security team missed."

The breath caught in my throat. All those sleepless nights, all those encrypted files I thought I was secretly breaching—he had been watching me the entire time.

"So what now?" I rasped, clutching my bruised hand against my ribs. "You expect me to just trust you?"

"Trust is irrelevant," Caspian said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a sleek black leather wallet. He pulled out a black keycard and a fresh burner phone, extending them toward me. "Survival is what matters. Right now, you have no money, no identity, and a line of professional killers waiting to collect the price on your head. You step out of this alley alone, and you won't survive until sunrise."

I stared at the keycard, my pride warring against the cold, hard reality staring me in the face. He was right. I was completely out of options.

"What's the catch, Caspian?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "Billionaires don't play savior for free."

A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Caspian's lips as a black SUV with tinted windows pulled up smoothly at the entrance of the alley.

"I need your brain, Ms. Ashford. And you need my power," Caspian said, opening the rear door of the vehicle and looking back at me. "Get in. Before their backup arrives."

Without waiting for my reply, he turned and stepped into the car. I looked down at the puddle of blood near my feet, then at the idling SUV, and took a long, slow breath before stepping out of the shadows.

Vespera "Vesper" AshfordThe morning sun pierced through the tinted glass of Caspian’s Tribeca penthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished concrete floors.I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest suite, staring at a woman I barely recognized. The soot and dried blood were gone, replaced by a tailored ivory pantsuit that clung perfectly to my frame. My hair was styled into sleek burgundy waves, and a pair of designer frames rested on the bridge of my nose. Beneath the foundation and high-end silk, my ribs still throbbed, and my left hand was tightly bandaged, hidden under the long sleeve of my blazer.I took a slow, steadying breath. Yesterday, I was a hunted fugitive running barefoot through Chinatown. Today, I was Vespera Vane—Caspian Kensington’s newly appointed Chief Risk Consultant. The door behind me clicked open. Caspian stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a dark navy Tom Ford suit. His gaze swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a sec

My dark hair had been digitally smoothed and tinted a rich burgundy shade, my sharp cheekbones accentuated, and my tired eyes polished into a cool, calculating stare. Attached to the inner page was a flawless paper trail: a decade’s worth of high-profile auditing records across London, Zurich, and Singapore."You had this prepared before you even tracked me down in Chinatown," I said, my thumb tracing the smooth laminate of the forged document."I don't leave my survival to chance, Vesper. Neither should you," Caspian replied without turning away from the rain-slicked glass overlooking Manhattan. "In seven hours, the executive board of Kensington Financials convenes for an emergency session. They ex

That’s how long I’d been living like a rat in the underbelly of Manhattan. The freezing October rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a bitter, bone-chilling fog that rolled off the Hudson River. I crouched behind a row of rusted dumpsters in a Chinatown alley, my arms wrapped tightly around my chest. I had managed to steal an oversized black hoodie and a pair of worn-out sneakers from a laundromat basket yesterday, but they did little to keep out the damp cold.My stomach let out a sharp, painful growl. I hadn't eaten a solid meal since the night Marcus died.Think, Vesper. There has to be a way out of this.I pulled my knees to my chest, trying to stop my body from shaking. Every bank account registered under my name was frozen—I’d checked at an ATM down on Canal Street using my primary debit card, only for the machine to swallow the plastic whole and display a red ACCOUNT SUSPENDED notice. My head throbbed as if someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull."Ms. Ashford? Can you hear me?"A face hovered above me. A man in a dark suit. Not a doctor. The sharp line of his jaw and the cold, unblinking glare gave him away instantly. Federal badge clipped to his belt."Where... where is Marcus?" My voice sounded like gravel grinding together.Marcus Vance. My mentor. The man who had trained me to follow paper trails that the world's most dangerous cartels and tech moguls tried so desperately to hide. We were supposed to cross-reference the offshore ledgers tonight. We were so close to unraveling the multi-billion-dollar laundering network operating right out of Manhattan. The agent didn't offer
