Chapter 7: Chapter Seven: Just the Two of Them

"Nanxiao, that's enough!"

Edmund Montgomery interrupted with annoyance, "Can't you stop being so petty? There's nothing between Matt and me. If you keep pushing your luck, don't blame me for not being nice to you!"

"Edmund Montgomery, who are you really married to, always taking her side?"

Hannah Pope, unable to hold back her anger, rolled up her sleeves, ready to argue with the man.

Marcus Kingsley, quick-eyed, noticed something was off with Nanxiao's expression and hurriedly stepped forward, placing his hand on her burning forehead.

"She has a fever."

His voice was low, and Nanxiao leaned against him, feeling as if all her strength had evaporated, but her eyes remained stubbornly fixed on the cold and indifferent figure of the man.

Edmund Montgomery frowned, not wanting to argue with Hannah Pope. Seeing Nanxiao's persistence, he was about to say something more, but a phone call completely disrupted his thoughts.

"Edmund, Edmund, where are you? Albert Ricardo... "

The woman's breathless sobs rang out clearly, and Edmund Montgomery's heart tightened instantly.

"What, wasn't he fine just now?"

"I don't know... Edmund, they just took Albert Ricardo into the emergency room. I'm so scared, can you come and be with me?"

She struggled to say his name, as if she had repeated it many times in her mind. Even in this weak state, there was still a hint of hope in her voice.

"If you stay here now, I won't mention divorce again."

Just for this moment, if he would stay by her side.

But Edmund Montgomery didn't hesitate at all.

He only froze for a moment before responding, "Sorry."

The calm, cold voice seemed to pierce through her eardrums. For a moment, Nanxiao felt like she couldn't breathe, and the sharp pain in her abdomen intensified.

Stephanie Doherty, genuinely crying, leaned closer, "What should we do? Will Albert Ricardo be okay?"

"He will be."

The man answered expressionlessly. Stephanie Doherty, not noticing anything amiss, thought he was worried about them, and her guilt lessened a bit.

She knew she was different; one call could bring Edmund Montgomery away from Nanxiao's bedside.

Even if Nanxiao was the legitimate young mistress of the Montgomery family, she couldn't compare to her!

Stephanie Doherty felt smug, holding the man's hand and silently shedding tears.

Considering her fear and worry, Edmund Montgomery didn't pull his hand away, only quietly turning his head away.

He didn't notice the woman secretly fiddling with her phone.

By the time the emergency was over, it was already night. Stephanie Doherty asked Edmund Montgomery to take her home, saying she needed to get some things.

"Edmund, is Miss Nan calling you back?"

She cautiously spoke, pretending to be troubled, "It's all my fault. If I had taken better care of Albert Ricardo, I wouldn't have kept you so long today."

The man finally spoke, "She's just being unreasonable."

Throwing a tantrum over a minor illness, how could she become so immature over the years?

Seeing the man frown, Stephanie Doherty felt more confident. As soon as the car stopped, she eagerly said,

"Come inside, Edmund. It's late, and you haven't eaten. I remember you used to love..."

Unexpectedly, Edmund Montgomery cut her off in a deep voice.

"No, I have some work at the company. I need to go back and handle it."

"Okay, alright."

Stephanie Doherty got out of the car, still a bit reluctant, "Next time, let's have dinner together."

He picked up his phone again, looking at the dozen or so missed calls, his expression unreadable.

"To the hospital."

There was a slight tremor in his cold voice, but he didn't notice it.

Back in the hospital, Nanxiao had just taken her medicine and was lying in bed, scrolling through her phone, when her eyes suddenly froze.

It was a recent post on Stephanie Doherty's social media, captioned, "No matter what, it's still you."

The accompanying photo showed two hands clasped tightly together.

The man's well-defined fingers, even in a casual shot, looked like a work of art. The glittering diamond ring deeply stung Nanxiao.

That was... Edmund Montgomery's wedding ring.

Even though she had prepared herself, seeing this scene, Nanxiao still felt a piercing pain.

So, when Edmund Montgomery called, she unhesitatingly rejected the call.

If he had already made his choice, why was he calling her?

The phone rang only once before falling silent.

That was Edmund Montgomery's patience.
