Chapter 1

I had not imagined that voice!

My hair stood on end as I realized I had been murdered and seemingly regressed. The mysterious woman seemed to know something.

I turned and caught sight of her walking away. Then I heard Rosa hit the ground.

There was chaos all around me. The woman disappeared into the crowd, and I could not find her.

"Quiet! Everyone, quiet!"

"Everyone back to your dorms, now! No one leaves without permission! Anyone who doesn't follow instructions will face serious disciplinary action!"

The dean had found the body. He quickly called the police and an ambulance, then called the security guards to keep order.

Remembering my own death, I pushed toward the exit, desperate to get off campus before I was killed again. A security guard spotted me and forced me back to the dorm building.

The police arrived ten minutes later. By then, my three dorm mates and I had been confined to our room.

"Rosa is dead? How is that possible?"

"She was about to get a scholarship. She would've had the money for her mom's medical bills soon. Why would she kill herself?"

Fiona Gold, the most timid of us, nestled in a corner as she trembled with fear. Wendy Yates, who had always been somewhat of a free spirit, rolled her eyes at her and went back to her game.

Jaina, who was the person in charge of our shared dorm, walked over to Fiona's bed. She grabbed her by the collar and slapped her hard. "What the hell are you talking about?

"Listen up, Fiona. We barely knew Rosa. She was a loner and probably autistic. We never talked to her. We didn't know her mom was sick or that she was about to get a scholarship. Her death has nothing to do with us, got it?"

Fiona held her red, swollen cheek and stared at Jaina in terror, trembling even harder. "I… I hear you..."

Jaina turned to Wendy and me. "That goes for you two, too. If the police ask, watch what you say. All of us have skeletons in our closets! If this gets out, we're all going down together!"

Wendy kept playing her game on her phone, unconcerned. Meanwhile, I nodded, feeling frantic deep inside.

We all knew Jaina had driven Rosa to her death. The rest of us had helped her because we were afraid of her family's influence.

But right now, protecting myself mattered more than standing up for Rosa. I had less than ten hours before I would be killed.

Jaina had installed an electronic lock on our dorm room door. Without the code, no one could open it from outside.

I was certain it had been locked when I went to sleep the last time.

That meant the culprit had to be one of the other three!

  • It's Your Turn   Chapter 9

This time, I told the police everything I knew, including my own crimes. I begged them to protect me and told them Michael was going to kill me. If I accepted the punishment I deserved and he had no way to get to me, surely he would let me go? Would that end the cycle of dying and regression? I prayed it would. If this did not end soon, I was going to lose my mind. "Don't worry. You'll be punished for your crimes. We won't let anyone take the law into their own hands!" The officer's firm assurance made me feel a little better. This time, officers guarded my holding cell around the clock. Michael had no way to get to me. I thought my nightmare was finally over. Then, an unbearable pain suddenly tore through my stomach. "The water! There's something wrong with the bottled water!" By the time I realized what had happened, it was too late. I died from the poison regressed yet again. I was going insane. The instant I heard "It's your turn," I lunged at the woman in despera

Before cutting my throat, he narrowed his eyes, savoring what was coming. "Soon, everyone from your dorm will be back together again. You're all going to accompany Rosa in Hell!" I realized that nothing I said would make him let me go. So, I laughed too. The words burst out in despair. "You think you're some kind of hero? "We're not good people, but neither are you! Even the law wouldn't sentence us to death, but you want to kill every last one of us! Even if Jaina and I deserve to die, what about Wendy and Fiona? Jaina threatened them into helping her!" As I finished, Michael cut my throat. Just before I died, I heard him say, "No, no. None of you are just accomplices. All of you have a hand in her death! Why else would Wendy volunteer to die to make up for what she did?" When I opened my eyes again, I was too stunned to think for a long time. Wendy had chosen to die? That explained how Michael knew our door code and why she had drugged our beer! She really had wanted us

As I listened to his side of the story for ten minutes next, I saw a completely different side of him. He said he had always loved Rosa deeply. He could not stand up to Jaina, so he had flattered her without meaning any of it, hoping she would leave Rosa alone eventually. But he had underestimated how distorted Jaina's mind was. Even after he distanced himself from Rosa, Jaina was still jealous and kept harassing her relentlessly. His secret help and encouragement had been the only things keeping Rosa alive. Then, a month earlier, Jaina had arranged for Rosa to be sexually assaulted. Rosa had not been able to take it anymore after that. She had been devastated. She was numb and unresponsive every day, a shell of her former self. Michael had noticed the change in the woman he loved, but no matter how much he asked, she would not tell him about the assault. He had started investigating and spent a month finding out the truth. Thirtieth of April. Five in the evening. He had

Who was it? The killer? How did he find me? "No..." I muttered, reassuring myself. "It has to be a homeless person or someone walking by. It can't be the killer!" I picked up a rock to defend myself, crept to the edge of my hiding place, and peeked out. My blood ran cold the next moment! There he was, walking slowly toward me with a sharp knife. His hoarse voice was cruel, like a hunter toying with prey he had already caught in his trap. "Quinn River… I found you…" My eyes widened in terror as I pulled back under the bridge. I wanted to fight, but I was too scared to lift the rock. It slipped from my hand and landed hard on my foot. I felt nothing. Fear had numbed all my senses. "Michael!" I shouted, my voice hoarse. "Why are you trying to kill me? Are you doing this to get revenge for Rosa? But... But Jaina was the one who drove her to her suicide! I did something wrong, but I can repent! I don't deserve to die!" By the time I finished, Michael was already under the

When I opened my eyes again, I was back just before Rosa's suicide. The strange woman whispered in my ear again. "It's your turn." As soon as she finished, I reached for her mask as fast as I could, but she dodged sideways as though she had expected it. The way she looked at me was filled with scorn. "How many times has it been now?" The third time. But I had confidence that this would be the last. Nothing would happen to me again. I no longer cared who the woman was. I ignored her and headed off campus. I knew who the killer was and how to avoid him. All I had to do was hide until he killed my other dorm mates and the police caught him. Then I would be safe. "Go back!" "Someone has committed suicide, and the campus is now on lockdown! You can come in, but no one's allowed out! Didn't you get the notice?" A security guard stopped me at the campus gates. I was too late again. No matter how much I pleaded, he would not budge. The campus had apparently issued stric

Something about the shape of her face looked familiar, but no matter how hard I glared at her, I could not remember who she was. Her eyes widened above her mask, then filled with mockery. "So, it has started for you?" She knew something! She had to know why I was trapped in this loop! Being murdered twice was more than I could bear. I gritted my teeth and growled, "Who killed me? What do I have to do to stay alive?" She did not answer. Rosa jumped off the building again. The woman looked toward the spot where Rosa had died, smiled, and shook off my grip. She disappeared into the panicked crowd. It took me a long time to calm down. Was she hinting that Rosa was behind my deaths and the time loop? Every time I came back to life, I returned to the moment Rosa died. And whoever kept killing me wanted revenge for Rosa. Two terrifying deaths and another bizarre regression had left me close to breaking down. Nothing mattered except ending the loop and getting my normal life
