Chapter 3

Author: AAA Builder
My soul trailed behind them, drifting into the mansion's living room.

The massive coffee table was buried under a mountain of beautifully wrapped luxury gift boxes.

Alexandra let out a squeal of delight, throwing herself onto the couch to start tearing into them.

There was an array of limited-edition bags, a custom diamond necklace, and the keys to a sports car. With every box she opened, she planted a sweet kiss on each of their cheeks, making the three grown men beam with adoration.

I floated quietly against the ceiling, watching the picture-perfect family of four.

Ethan rubbed the bridge of his nose and reached for the last two deep blue velvet jewelry boxes sitting at the edge of the table.

Alexandra's eyes lit up, and she reached out to grab them. "What are those, Ethan?"

Ethan pulled his hand back slightly. "These are for Cassie."

Alexandra's hand froze mid-air, and the smile instantly vanished from her face.

"It's a custom white dress and a matching bracelet," Liam chimed in.

Julian let out a soft sigh. "Ever since we brought her back, she's been wearing nothing but those same two ragged T-shirts. She doesn't even own a decent dress.

"Once she's released tomorrow, we'll give her these. Just a little token to show her she's officially part of the family."

Alexandra stared daggers at the velvet boxes.

All of a sudden, her eyes welled up, and tears began to stream down her cheeks.

"Are you guys abandoning me?"

She spun around, weeping hysterically.

"She's been so awful to me! She stole my foundation, played dead just to scare me, and completely ruined our April Fools' Day! Yet you guys went and bought her these amazing homecoming gifts?

"Is it because she's blood-related? And since I'm adopted, do you think I don't deserve to be a part of this family anymore?"

My brothers instantly panicked.

Julian scrambled over, dropping to one knee by the couch as he grabbed Alexandra's hands. "Alexandra, what are you talking about? You'll always be my one and only little sister!"

Ethan looked at the boxes in his hands, then at Alexandra, who was practically hyperventilating from crying so hard.

Without a shred of hesitation, he shoved both boxes into her lap.

"Don't cry. It's just a dress and a bracelet. They're yours," he said.

Alexandra sniffled, looking up as she made a half-hearted attempt to push back. "But… these were supposed to be Cassie's homecoming presents."

Ethan sighed, and something unreadable flickered across his eyes.

"After the stunt she pulled today, she doesn't deserve a dress like this. When we let her out tomorrow, we'll just buy her a random gift to make up for it."

Tears spilled from my eyes.

I wanted to tell Ethan not to bother making it up to me because I wouldn't be able to receive a gift from them anymore.

Just then, Alexandra's waterworks cut off instantly.

Right in front of them, she tore into the packaging.

She pulled out the dress, which had been custom-made to my exact measurements, and held it up against herself excitedly.

A wicked gleam flashed in her eyes as she spun toward the three of them.

"Guys, I have to try this on right now!"

Soon after, Alexandra stepped out. The white dress was noticeably tight on her frame, and the bracelet hung from her wrist.

She did a little spin in the center of the room and asked coyly, "Well? How do I look?"

The guys nodded in unison, complimenting her, while Julian whipped out his phone to snap a dozen pictures of her.

All of a sudden, Alexandra looped her arm through Ethan's, tugging at him playfully.

"Ethan, since Cassie can't wear this anyway, let's go down to the garage. I want to show her how it looks on me! Please?"

Ethan's brows pulled together. "She's supposed to be in a timeout. Why go down there now?"

"Oh, come on. Just for a second! Let's go live on the stream, too. We can let the viewers vote on who wore it better!"

Worn down by her relentless nagging, Ethan finally gave in with a helpless shrug.

"Fine, fine. You win."

Once again, the heavy roller door began to slowly roll upward.

My funeral was a massive affair. The Reids bought out the entire hillside, where a sea of white lilies swayed miserably in the cold rain.A never-ending line of guests came to pay their respects, but every single one of them was turned away at the cemetery gates. My brothers told them that I had always hated noise and hated being around strangers when I was alive. In front of my headstone, the three of them stood in the rain in pitch-black suits like three soulless statues.Liam was clutching a water-damaged notebook with frayed edges tightly in his hand.He had found it the day before while packing away my things. It had been hidden away in a pocket sewn deep inside my old coat. With a shaking hand, Liam flipped to the very first page. The paper was damp from the rain, and the ink was slightly blurry. My very first entry read, "They brought me home today! Turns out I'm not an orphan after all. I have three older brothers who love me so much. "Ethan made sure I was well-fed,

Gabriel fell to the ground, pointing directly at Alexandra as she lay huddled on the couch. A gut-wrenching wail tore out of him."It was her, Mr. Ethan! Ms. Martin called us the second you guys rushed Ms. Reid to the hospital."The words had barely left his mouth before Alexandra scrambled forward frantically, lunging to slap her hand over Gabriel's mouth."Shut up! You lying old bastard! She must've paid you off to set me up!""Get off him!" Julian roared. He grabbed Alexandra by her hair, ripping her backward and throwing her to the floor. "Keep talking, Gabriel."Gabriel was hysterical, weeping so hard he could barely breathe. "She told us on the phone that if we didn't do exactly what she said, she'd ruin us. She threatened to run my whole family out of Arlington and get my grandson kicked out of school!"Winona fell to her knees right next to him. Tears and snot were running down her face."Mr. Ethan, Mr. Liam, the vents on that thing…"She choked on her own breath, f

Julian's hands shook as he carefully peeled back the layers of old newspaper.Inside was a sleek carbon-fiber gift box. He popped the lid, revealing a pair of limited-edition, professional racing gloves.Julian sucked in a sharp breath. This was a rare, deadstock pair he had spent months hunting for online, completely unable to track down a single seller.Inside the palm of the right glove, a faded, bright yellow good-luck charm was stitched in shaky, uneven thread. It was dotted with dark red bloodstains.A neatly folded note was tucked underneath."I went to the track where you practice and washed cars for the owner for a month. He finally agreed to sell them to me at retail price! And I also stitched this charm for you myself. I prayed you'll stay safe, win every race, and make it home every night."Julian's head spun as a memory hit him.Two weeks ago, he had come home from a track day and found me limping around the yard, sweeping up leaves. My forehead was wrapped in gauz

The next morning, Alexandra stood in the middle of the living room holding a tissue over her nose. She was bossing the maids around as they cleaned out my room."Move it!" she barked. "Throw out everything she touched. Seriously, leaving her junk in this house is such a bad omen."Gabriel Ashby, the butler, stepped out of the cramped, windowless closet of a room I had been living in, dragging a beaten-up cardboard box."Mr. Ethan, everything else is cleared out," Gabriel said. "But we found this shoved all the way in the back, right under Ms. Reid's bed."Ethan sat on the couch, looking like he had aged overnight. He stared at the box before reaching out and ripping the packing tape off.Inside the box lay a few small packages wrapped in old newspapers. Names were scribbled across the rough paper in messy, uneven marker. With a shaking hand, Ethan picked up the one with his name on it.He tore away the layers of newspaper, revealing a 50,000-dollar luxury electric neck massage

Bang! Bang! The lock was completely shattered.Ethan ripped open the heavy crystal lid, and a suffocating stench of blood instantly hit them in the face.Julian rushed forward, grabbing my right hand as it dangled over the edge of the coffin.A split second later, a blood-curdling scream tore out of his throat and through the quiet of the night."She isn't breathing… Cassie… Cassie's dead!"Ethan shoved Julian out of the way, leaning down to lift my stiff body out of the coffin."To the hospital!" he barked. "Quick, start the car!"The black Maybach tore through the midnight streets at a breakneck speed. In the backseat, Julian held my corpse tightly against his chest. By then, my body was already cold as ice.He took off his jacket to wrap around me, desperately rubbing my hands, which were completely mangled and covered in dried blood."Cassie, I'm so sorry. Please don't do this to me. Just say something, okay?"Julian's tears rained down on my face. His voice trembled un
