Chapter 89

Author: Light Breeze
Julian chased after Willow to the underground parking lot.

Tonight, Willow had driven a white Rolls-Royce Spectre, but the car was empty. She wasn't inside.

Julian tried to open the door, then gave up.

He got into his own car, ready to drive around to look for her. He was anxious, eager to find her.

Just as he was about to start the engine, his phone rang.

The call was from Grandsburg. Alicia Burke was calling.

Julian stared at the name for a few seconds before picking up. Soon, a soft feminine voice came through the phone.

"Julian, I'm really sorry. Catherine has caused you trouble again.

"I heard about what happened tonight. My parents acted rashly and offended your wife. I want to apologize on their behalf. Please don't hold it against them.

"They've done so much for me over the years. Julian, if it weren't for my poor health back then—"

Julian didn't let her continue.

Holding his phone, his chiseled face remained expressionless. His voice was calm yet devoid of warmth. "

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 391

Dexter stayed in Eboris for quite some time. A month later, even with New Year's approaching, there was still no sign of him returning.Eleanor hesitated for days before she finally dialed his number, but the call didn't go through. Instead, she happened to run into Dexter's secretary, Bernice, at a social function. Bernice mentioned that Dexter wouldn't be back until mid-January.Another half month to go…Eleanor was embarrassed to ask too many details, so after some small talk, she said goodbye to Bernice. The hallway in the clubhouse was bathed in dazzling lights. Bernice stood behind her, watching Eleanor's retreating figure. With a soft sigh, she turned away.Eleanor returned to the private lounge, where the atmosphere was lively. Michael was helping her entertain the two investors. He'd taken on all the drinks that evening. When Michael liked someone, he couldn't hide it. After seeing the guests off, he leaned back in his chair lazily. His breath reeked of alcohol."I dran

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 390

At night, Maisie had fallen asleep. After a shower, Eleanor wrapped herself in a bathrobe and sat out on the balcony, quietly gazing at the bright moon hanging in the sky, lost in thought. After a long time, she lowered her head and opened WhatsApp, tapping into the chat with Dexter. The last time they talked was about Maisie, over two weeks ago.He had gone to Eboris, and if it weren't for Maisie, she wouldn't even have known. But before he left, he asked her to think about their future seriously.Eleanor was torn, but she knew that if she hadn't felt anything at all, she wouldn't be thinking about this in the middle of the night, tempted to reach out to him.Her slender fingers hovered above the screen, but in the end, she didn't send him a message. She told herself to wait a little longer. Perhaps Dexter would be back in a few days.Gradually, the neon lights faded, and the city drifted into sleep.Early in the morning, the winter sun streamed into the bedroom, casting a warm

Eleanor was once again blocked outside the office. It was Russell again.Shell rolled down the window. Russell was still wearing the same clothes as yesterday. He looked haggard, and his eyes were bloodshot. It was obvious he hadn't slept all night. She asked calmly, "What else is there to talk about?"They'd dated for nearly half a year, and there weren't any financial disputes or expensive gifts to return. As far as Eleanor was concerned, they'd drawn the line clearly. At first, Russell hadn't held out much hope. He just wanted to see her one last time, but he hadn't expected to see what he saw. Her blouse was buttoned up neatly, but he could still see the faint hickeys on her fair neck.Inside the car, a subtle, masculine scent lingered. Eleanor had spent the night with someone.Russell couldn't take it. Eyes reddened, he asked angrily, "Who were you with? Was it Michael or Dexter? You've always refused to sleep with me. Was it because you had someone else in your heart?"Ele

Dawn broke. Eleanor woke up. The moment she opened her eyes, she felt a heavy weight on her body.Glancing down, she saw a man's arm draped across her. It had clearly defined muscles, undoubtedly the result of regular workouts. Then, she looked up and saw a familiar face. It was Dexter! He was sound asleep. His usually sharp features looked much softer at this moment, but his jaw was still tensed slightly, carving out a sensual curve.Eleanor stared at him intently, her mind buzzing. Last night, did she and Dexter spend the whole night together?Scenes of the last night crept into her mind, by the floor-to-ceiling windows, on the sofa, the racing heartbeat and breathless moans…A faint flush crept over her face, turning her completely red.She tried to slip out of bed quietly, but the moment she moved, her slender wrist was grabbed. Then, uncontrollably, she was pulled straight into the man's arms.He was only wearing a thin bathrobe, which was partially open at the moment. Her

Eleanor sat down inside her car. It was still raining outside. A withered yellow leaf clung to the windshield, so she switched on the wipers. The black blades swung back and forth, but it was futile as the leaf remained stuck on the windshield.Leaning against the leather seat, she gazed at the rain outside. She didn't love Russell deeply, but his betrayal dragged her back to her childhood, back to that heart-wrenching evening. Her usually honest and kind father turned violent and smashed a beer bottle against her mother's head, causing blood to gush out. The most vivid memory she had was the sharp shards of glass sticking in Layla's scalp, looking terrifying. The skies were filled with heavy clouds, and little Eleanor cried uncontrollably. Layla endured the pain and hugged her. "Don't be scared. Mommy's fine."Wounds from childhood took a lifetime to heal. Tears slid from the corners of Eleanor's eyes.It turned out that after all these years, that scene still haunted her. It wa

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 386

Eleanor took a glance at Emily before turning to Declan, Phoebe, and Emily. "She should talk to whoever got her pregnant. I've broken up with Russell. Whatever happens between them has nothing to do with me."Emily choked back tears. "Eleanor, I'm sorry! I didn't mean for this to happen. I just couldn't control myself."Eleanor chuckled. "You didn't mean for this to happen? I believe you knew Russell. When he was on a business trip, you chased him all the way to the north, just to act like a maid to him. Then, you ended up in his bed, didn't you?"Emily still denied it. "I didn't!"Suddenly, she dropped to her knees in front of Eleanor and pleaded. "Eleanor, I really didn't mean for it to happen. I liked him, that's why I made a mistake."I thought he liked me too. When I bled the first time, he held me and kissed me for a long time, saying that he'd take care of me and that he'd take responsibility."Declan looked awkward. This was truly embarrassing.Eleanor stared at her and

Russell was stunned. She was pregnant? How was that even possible? They had only had sex for two or three times in total. What were the odds? Besides, Emily told him she was in her safe window, which was the reason why he hadn't used protection. How could she have gotten pregnant?Russell had no love for Emily, so he made a swift decision. "Get an abortion. I'll give you half a million as compensation."Emily's eyes were full of tears, and her face full of reluctance. "Russell, this is a life, and our flesh and blood. I can't do something so cruel."Russell's face darkened. "I have a girlfriend, and we're already talking about marriage."Emily bit her lip, not daring to reveal the truth. Russell was in a hurry to find Eleanor, so he shook Emily off and said, "Think about it, Emily. I'm never going to marry you."Then, he turned around and left heartlessly.Emily stood in a thin cotton coat, watching his retreating figure. Her lips trembled as she murmured to herself, "But when w

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 384

In the blink of an eye, winter had arrived. The relationship between Eleanor and Russell had been going smoothly. His parents were quite fond of Eleanor and had been subtly nudging the couple toward marriage. That Saturday, they invited Eleanor over again. Originally, they had planned to invite Maisie along as well, but she had gone back to the Ziegler residence. The small villa was warm and cozy. The Shelton family was highly educated, but they didn't hire a housekeeper. All household chores were handled by Russell's mother, Constance Page.Eleanor felt it was inappropriate to just sit around, so she accompanied Constance inside the kitchen. While she cooked, Eleanor cut the fruits.Constance smiled. "You don't need to keep me company. Go out and relax."Constance was open-minded. She knew that Eleanor was career-minded. Even after marriage, she wouldn't be expected to live with them, nor would she be confined to the kitchen. Therefore, she thought it was better to leave a good i

Dexter wanted it badly. He had not had sex for more than two years. Of course, he wanted it.He stared at her for a long time, but in the end, reason won. Eleanor was no longer his.He fell heavily to his side, sinking into the soft mattress. Though the lights were off, he still felt it was too bright, so he shielded his eyes with his hand. After a while, he couldn't help but turn toward her again, quietly watching. She wasn't his anymore. The room was silent. Dexter hadn't left, but he didn't stay in the master bedroom. Instead, he went to the living room and slept on the sofa.He didn't grab a blanket as he simply removed his wool overcoat and draped it over himself. In the late-autumn air, he lay quietly, staring into the dark of the night.Just now, he had said a lot of nonsense. At the break of dawn, Eleanor woke up. She was still wearing the dress from last night, but her overcoat was gone. After a while, fragmented memories of last night flooded in. After Erika dropped h
