How Did You Know I'm Trouble

I allowed my lower legs to dangle rhythmically against the cabinetry as I masticated my food, gradually finding myself somewhat leaning into the intense, percussive energy of the music vibrating through the drywall. Letting my eyelids slip shut, I began softly humming along with the familiar vocal stylings of a popular pop anthem detailing the predictable errors of welcoming a dangerous presence into one's life.

"How did you know I'm trouble?"

A low, resonant, incredibly dark timbre vibrated through the air, laced with undeniable amusement, originating from a coordinates shockingly close to my physical ear.

Wait... what?

My eyelids snapped open instantly as I violently launched myself off the stone counter, my feet hitting the floorboards in a clumsy stumble as I recoiled backward. My heart immediately migrated to the base of my throat, hammering at a completely erratic, unmanageable velocity.

Standing directly within my immediate perimeter was a male figure—exceptionally built, though perhaps not overwhelmingly tall in a monstrous sense. His hair was cropped closely along the sides of his skull while the crown featured an intentional, disorganized length of midnight-dark strands—a shade that, by pure coincidence, perfectly mirrored the deep pigment of my own irises. But it was the precise hue of his eyes that caused the air to completely catch in my lungs. They were an unmistakable, piercing shade of brilliant turquoise, and the sheer intensity of his gaze was so profoundly hypnotic that I felt a bizarre sensation of losing my fundamental autonomy just by looking at them.

Without question, he was the living embodiment of Danger.

"Huh?" The syllable slipped past my lips as an almost imperceptible breath, my jaw undoubtedly resting in a state of unrefined slackness.

"Nothing." He replied, his sharp gaze narrowing as he zeroed in on my features, deliberately transferring his weight to execute a predatory step closer into my space.

I swallowed hard against the dryness in my throat, my eyes involuntarily charting a path across his physique. He was wearing a simple, earth-toned v-neck collar that adhered to the contours of his torso like a secondary layer of dermis, allowing me to practically map out the defined musculature of his abdomen beneath the fabric.

A sharp, intentional clearing of a throat suddenly shattered my trance, forcing my gaze to rapidly snap back up to meet his irises, and instantly, I felt that identical, alarming sensation of drowning within those turquoise depths all over again.

Ugh! Get a grip!

A slow, knowing smirk etched itself across his mouth, and he utilized that moment to close the remaining distance between us, effectively towering over my smaller frame. It was only in this extreme proximity that the reality of his height registered. He was immensely tall. I was literally forced to tilt my skull backward at a severe angle just to sustain direct optical contact with him.

"Are you one of those? What are they called? Uh... aha! Party Crashers?" He inquired, elevating a singular eyebrow as the true implication of his words finally penetrated my consciousness like a splash of scalding liquid hitting an exposed nerve.

The knowing smirk rapidly decayed into something distinctly predatory, and he aggressively breached the boundaries of my personal space, drilling his breathtaking, icy eyes directly into my own. "What were you doing in here? Huh? Looking for some weed? Wait!" His expression underwent a volatile shift into pure hostility, "Who told you that I keep it in here? I don't think I've mentioned it to anyone. Ever."

It was glaringly obvious that he was operating entirely within the confines of a self-contained, paranoid monologue.

My eyebrows rocketed upward toward my hairline in sheer disbelief, and I frantically shook my head from side to side, my tongue darting out to coat my dry lips. I found myself completely incapable of locating my vocal cords. The individual radiated an incredibly potent, suffocatingly intense aura of absolute dominance that seemed to have effectively paralyzed both my speech centers and my cardiovascular rhythm.

This was a disaster.

He was, without a single shred of uncertainty, T R O U B L E.

He angled his torso downward, leaning closer, and I instinctively came close to shutting my eyes as a wave of his incredibly potent, complexly sweet designer cologne flooded my respiratory system. "I loathe party crashers, you know that? I always get a couple of you and then I call my guards who rush in and beat the shit out of you and throw you out on the streets."

Was he genuinely issuing a physical ultimatum to me right now? My stomach experienced a violent, sickening drop, seemingly plummeting straight down to my feet as I took another uncoordinated step backward, my head continuing to shake in silent denial.

Did he truly perceive me as some sort of desperate illicit substance abuser? Did my unrefined, exhausted aesthetic genuinely project that level of degradation to his high-society eyes? And more importantly, what kind of absolute lunatic stores dangerous, highly illegal narcotics inside a communal culinary space?

An innate sense of defiance flared through my fear; I rolled my eyes deliberately and anchored my feet to the floorboards, curling my hands into white-knuckled, rigid spheres down at my flanks. The display of resistance seemed to genuinely amuse him, his lips twisting back into that arrogant smirk. "But," he murmured, his gaze beginning a slow, deliberate transit down the length of my physical form, and I could have sworn the sensation was so intense it felt as though his physical fingers were scraping across my bare skin rather than merely his visual appraisal.

I coated my lips with my tongue once more, desperately trying to command my heart to resume a stable, rational cadence.

"I can make an exception this time, if you tell me who told you where I keep my stash."

"I-I--" I stammered, the syllables fragments of nothing.

"What the hell are you doing with my sister?! Get the FUCK away from her, now!"

Marcus’s roaring vocal chords detonated across the culinary space, completely obliterating the ambient house music and causing my entire physical frame to violently flinch backward in shock.

The towering stranger slowly rotated his head to acknowledge the interruption, before deliberately shifting his turquoise gaze back down to lock onto me. His irises flared with an emotion so profoundly menacing and dark that an instinctive urge to flee for cover washed over me—I felt completely and utterly minimized by his presence.

"Your sister?" He spat the words out with an expression of intense disgust, as though the phrase itself possessed the chemical properties of corrosive acid against his palate.

In a flash of motion, my brother forcefully shoved the larger man backward, planting his wide frame directly into the gap between us. With his back squarely turned to me, Marcus projected a gaze of unadulterated fury at the intruder. "Yeah, my sister. The one I wouldn't want your hands, eyes, or anything around." A literal, animalistic growl vibrated through his chest.

I bit down hard on my lower lip, casting my eyes downward to study the patterns on the floorboards. The entire sequence was profoundly mortifying, yet a cynical part of me recognized that I had become entirely accustomed to this exact dynamic. I was fully aware that Marcus would never have intervened with this level of volatile protection if Beatrice had been the sibling standing in this kitchen.

Beatrice possessed a sharp, calculating social intellect; she operated with a strategic prowess that kept her entirely insulated from emotional devastation. She never invested herself in serious entanglements and maintained absolute mastery over her personal boundaries during social exploits. Members of the opposite sex invariably succumbed to her effortless allure, while simultaneously treating my existence as though my very presence on the planet was an annoying inconvenience.

That specific disparity was the precise reason Marcus maintained an aggressively hyper-vigilant, deeply sensitive protective shield over my life. In his explicit phrasing, I was simply kind—fundamentally too benevolent for my own survival. Those were his exact assessments, not my own. He frequently lectured me that I extended trust far too rapidly and operated under a cloud of terminal naivety—regardless of how many times I consciously attempted to invalidate his thesis by executing rational, well-considered lifestyle choices.

Perhaps, when stripped of the hyperbole, it was merely his internalized mechanism for executing the duties of an elder brother.

"It's not like I was making out with her or anything. And," the stranger's head tilted at an angle, his icy turquoise eyes cutting around Marcus’s shoulder to lock onto mine, sending an immediate, freezing tremor cascading straight down my spinal column. His lips curved into a final, devastating smirk, "she's not my type."

Ouch.

No matter how intensely I tried to internalize the philosophical belief that decent, honorable men existed somewhere in the world, instances of this nature carried a sharp, undeniable sting—especially when an individual summarily dismissed my value based entirely on the casual nature of my attire, my physical presentation, or whatever arbitrary metric they utilized.

Marcus stepped directly into the man's immediate facial perimeter, his fists clenching so violently that his knuckles turned entirely bloodless.

This was going to turn into a physical altercation.

Acting on pure instinct, I reached out to clamp my hand firmly around his forearm and maneuvered my body directly into the space separating the two alpha temperaments, deliberately turning my shoulder blades toward the towering stranger. "I made sandwiches. Thought you might be hungry after you know," I murmured to Marcus, intentionally wiggling my eyebrows in a pointed reference to the brunette scenario I had witnessed upstairs.

The tense lines of his face fractured; he let out a long, deflating sigh, allowing the violent tension to drain completely from his hands as he gifted me one of his trademark, incredibly warm smiles.

Even with my back turned, I could vividly feel the radiant heat of the stranger's intense gaze burning into my skin, but I maintained absolute discipline, refusing to rotate my head until the definitive, heavy thud of the kitchen double doors swinging shut echoed through the room.

I closed my eyes tightly, releasing a massive, pent-up reservoir of oxygen from my lungs.

Marcus immediately encircled my arm with his hand, forcing me to open my eyes and confront the deep, unadulterated anxiety swirling within his hazel irises. "What was he doing in here, so close to you?"

An intense wave of heat rapidly migrated up my throat, instantly flooding my cheeks with crimson coloring.

I offered a noncommittal, casual shrug of my shoulders.

How exactly was I supposed to articulate the reality of the situation? Hey, he fully believed I was a degenerate substance abuser who had illicitly infiltrated his high-society event for the express purpose of plundering his stash of narcotics—which he apparently keeps sequestered in some hidden crevice of this culinary workspace.
