Summer

Summer Brooks did not have time for hockey players, reality television, or the systemic enabling of toxic masculinity.

She had a midterm in exactly forty-five minutes, a broadcast journalism portfolio to edit, and a checking account balance that currently read $14.32.

"Come on, Summer, just look at the numbers," her best friend, Chloe, pleaded, dragging her by the arm through the bustling corridors of the communications building.

“It’s not just a gig. It’s the gig. HypeTV is paying a production assistant stipend that could cover your entire semester’s housing."

"Chloe, I am a serious journalist," Summer said, balancing a stack of heavy textbooks in one arm and a lukewarm travel mug of cheap coffee in the other.

“I don’t want my resume to say I spent my senior year fetching oat milk lattes for reality TV producers who exploit college students for clicks."

"It’s an associate producer credit, Summer! Plus talent compensation if they use you on camera as a host or an interviewer," Chloe argued, sliding into step beside her as they reached the broadcast studio doors.

“And let’s face it. Since the university cut the departmental grant, you’re one late payment away from being kicked out of the dorms."

That hit a nerve. Summer stopped in her tracks, the weight of her reality crashing down.

Chloe wasn't lying. Summer’s father had lost his job over the summer, and the financial aid office at Eastern University had been utterly ruthless.

She was working two jobs one at the campus library and another transcribing audio files for a local news station and she was still drowning.

She had exactly two weeks to clear her outstanding tuition balance, or she wouldn't be allowed to register for her final semester.

"Who is the show even about?" Summer asked, sighing in defeat as she pushed open the door to the studio.

"They’re focusing on the athletic department," Chloe said, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper.

“Specifically, the hockey team. They’re trying to build a storyline around Jaxson Reed."

Summer’s stomach turned. "Reed? The guy who practically hospitalized a student outside the diner on Friday night? Are you kidding me? He belongs in a courtroom, not on a reality show."

“The school is covering for him," Chloe whispered.

"They need him for the championships. Rumor has it they're trying to find a girl to do a 'fake dating' storyline with him to make him look like a saint. They’re auditioning girls from the Greek system today."

"Disgusting," Summer muttered, setting her books down on a studio desk.

“That is exactly what is wrong with this campus. Athletes get a pass for everything because they can slide a piece of rubber into a net. He’s a privileged, reckless jock who thinks he’s untouchable. I’d love to get him under a studio light for ten minutes. I’d ask him the questions his PR team is terrified of."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the broadcast studio swung open with a loud thud.

Professor Harrison, the head of the journalism department, stepped into the room, followed closely by a woman in a sharp white power suit, oversized sunglasses perched on her head, and an aura of intense, high octane stress.

"Summer," Professor Harrison said, pointing a finger directly at her.

“Thank goodness you’re here. Come with me to my office. This is Sarah Sterling, Executive Producer for HypeTV."

Summer blinked, casting a panicked look at Chloe before smoothing down her oversized thrift-store sweater.

“Uh, hello. Nice to meet you."

Sarah Sterling didn't shake her hand. Instead, she circled Summer like a hawk evaluating a particularly interesting mouse.

She looked at Summer’s dark, expressive eyes, her sharp jawline, and the fierce, unimpressed expression currently plastered across her face.

"She’s perfect," Sarah said, turning to Professor Harrison.

“The contrast is exquisite. The fierce, intellectual scholarship student versus the disgraced golden boy. The audience will eat her alive."

Summer’s brow furrowed. "I'm sorry, what am I perfect for? If this is about the production assistant position, I haven't submitted my written application yet—“

“Forget the PA position, sweetie," Sarah interrupted, waving a manicured hand dismissively.

“How would you like your entire college tuition paid in full, a guaranteed post-grad internship at network headquarters in New York, and a primetime television credit?"

Summer’s heart skipped a beat. The words tuition paid in full echoed in her mind like a lifeline thrown to a drowning swimmer.

“What's the catch?"

Sarah smiled, and it looked remarkably like a shark spotting blood in the water.

“We don't want you behind the camera, Summer. We want you in front of it. We want you to save the reputation of Eastern University’s star hockey player.”

“Meaning?” Sarah asked

“We want you to be Jaxson Reed’s new girlfriend."

  • Love on Thin Ice   The Definitive After

SummerThe afternoon sun filtered through the tall, arched windows of our townhouse, casting warm, golden panels of light across the hardwood floor. In the quiet of our home, the only sound was the rhythmic, comforting click of my keyboard.I was sitting at the heavy oak desk in the study, a half-empty mug of coffee cooling beside me, putting the finishing touches on my latest front page investigative piece. It was a deep-dive expose on municipal corporate land grabbing, backed by a national publication that respected my boundaries, paid me what I was actually worth, and never asked me to compromise my ethics for a headline. For the first time in my life, there were no strings attached to my success. No network contracts, no hidden cameras, and no looming institutional threats hanging over our heads like a guillotine. The financial freedom we had built on our own terms had given us the ultimate luxury: absolute agency. We owned our lives, our space, and our security. Sometimes,

  • Love on Thin Ice   The Slow Thaw

Summer"Are you completely out of your mind?"I stood in the middle of our cramped Brooklyn living room, my coat still damp from the sleet, staring at Chloe. She was pacing the worn hardwood floor, her blazer slung over the back of a chair, looking like a brilliant defense attorney who had just won a high-profile case and was still riding the adrenaline high."Technically, the venue's router was public domain," Chloe said, waving a hand dismissively as she reached for a half-empty bottle of wine on the counter. “And the administrative database was practically begging to be bypassed. A high schooler with a basic script could have done it.""Chloe. You hacked a private metropolitan gala," I said, though the anger in my voice was rapidly losing its foundation, replaced by a deep, bone-weary exhaustion. “You could have been arrested. Your job, your portfolio, your entire creative design career—you put all of it on the chopping block.""They were doing it again, Summer," Chloe said, her

  • Love on Thin Ice   The Conversation

JaxsonThe quiet that had settled over the lounge shattered into a chaotic roar.Reporters who had sneaked into the alumni mixer were already on their phones, their voices raised in frantic, overlapping pitches as they dictated the breaking story to their sports desks. University donors were shouting at the venue managers, demanding to know who was running the tech booth, while the corporate executives who had been hovering around me moments ago backed away, their faces pale with public-relations panic. But the noise of the room didn't reach me. It was just white static.I stood in the center of the floor, my hands trembling at my sides, my chest heaving as the pieces of the last five years violently slammed together in my mind. The leaked tapes. Her cold indifference in the seminar rooms. The way she had let me drag her name through the mud, let me look at her like she was a parasite, and let me humiliate her on that auditorium stage. She had done all of it to keep Layla’s medic

  • Love on Thin Ice   The High Jacked Projector

ChloeThe weight of the black flash drive in my blazer pocket felt like a thermal detonator. I slipped away from the bar, the ambient hum of the Soho lounge fading into background static as my mind mapped out the layout of The Foundry. Most people in our graduating class thought of me as the creative director, the designer, the girl who made things look pretty. They forgot that to package and edit raw media files for a high-tier agency, you had to understand the pipeline. You had to know how networks talked to servers, and more importantly, how local venue hardware connected to the cloud.I bypassed the main floor and headed up the narrow, carpeted stairs leading toward the mezzanine. The venue's tech booth sat directly above the main bar, behind a pane of one-way glass that overlooked the entire alumni gala. The door was locked with a standard digital keypad, but the venue was old and the staff was distracted by a room full of high profile, free drinking corporate clients.I pul

  • Love on Thin Ice   The Shady Deal

ChloeThe moment Summer’s dress vanished around the corner of the hallway, I felt like I could finally breathe again—though the air in the lounge had turned entirely toxic. I looked across the crowded room.Jaxson hadn't moved from the perimeter of the entryway, but his amber eyes were locked onto the corridor where Summer had disappeared, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his neck looked like steel cables. He didn't look like a triumphant NHL star; he looked like a man trapped in a room full of mirrors.I couldn't sit there under the weight of his gaze. I needed a distraction, something to take the edge off the sudden adrenaline spike. I stood up, smoothing down my blazer, and walked toward the crowded marble bar on the opposite side of the lounge to grab another round of drinks. The ambient noise of the alumni mixer hummed around me, a chaotic blend of laughter and networking banter that suddenly made me feel incredibly distant from everyone I went to school with.I w

  • Love on Thin Ice   The SOHO Invite

SummerThe digital invitation arrived on a bleak Tuesday evening, exactly fourteen days before the event, buried beneath a mountain of unread press releases and court docket alerts. It popped up on my screen with a soft, bright notification that felt entirely out of place in my cramped Brooklyn kitchen.EASTERN HIGH METROPOLITAN ALUMNI MIXERThe Foundry — Soho, New York City.7:00 PM till Late.Reconnect. Rebuild. Remember.I stared at the minimalist, glossy PDF layout. Reconnect. Rebuild. Remember. The marketing verbs felt like a direct insult, an invitation to excavate a past I had spent the last six months systematically burying under a mountain of sixty-hour work weeks. Outside my narrow window, a freezing rain slicked the fire escapes, the distant, muffled roar of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway acting as the white noise to my isolation.I didn't delete the email, but I minimized the tab, forcing my eyes back to the dry text of a public records request I was drafting for the M
