The first to be pulled from the group is Emily. She goes with Laura and a group of cameras outside where they’ll be filming the introductions.
A guy named Thomas tells us he’s the second in command on set, and he takes the rest of us around the house. He seems a little more… uptight than Laura. He doesn’t smile and speaks in a clipped tone.
There’s a fully equipped gym, a library, a very modern kitchen, two game rooms, and upstairs there’s ten bedrooms and five bathrooms. Everyone has their own room that is connected to a bathroom that leads into another room. I’d never been in a house this big before and all I could think about as we walked around it was how long it would take to clean the entire thing.
As we walk around and Thomas goes on about how to turn this on and what to do if this happens, we’re all pulled one by one. I’m pulled third, after Violet and Emily. I guess they were doing the girls first.
I walk behind Laura as she leads me back through the house and outside.
“Can we have makeup touch her up a bit?” Laura says to a couple of women as we walk out the sliding door. They nod, and usher me over to a seat. The two women start fussing and preening over me, brushing my hair and powdering the shine off my face. I do my best to sit still but they’re being a bit aggressive since they’re rushing.
Once they’re done I’m led in front of the cameras and sat on one of the couches outside. I straighten my back, and tuck my hair behind my ear a little. I felt like I was posing for a school picture, but a thousand times worse.
“Alright Angel. Make sure you sit up straight and try not to stare too much into the camera, okay? You are talking to the audience, but it’s weird to never break eye contact, you know?” Laura says to me as she stands to the side, typing away on her phone. “Let’s do this.” She waves to the camera guy who nods and positions himself behind his camera.
She tucks her phone away, fluffs her hair, and puts on that big grin of hers as the camera turns to her. I guess it was a fake smile for the cameras.
“Alright guys, next up for introductions, we have Angel Hawthorne, a sweet girl next door from a small pack in the south.” She does a little wave with her hand, and the camera pans to me.
My heart races so hard in my chest I’m shocked the others can't hear it. I put on the best smile I can and wave to the camera a little, feeling completely ridiculous.
“Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself, Angel? What do you like to do in your free time? How old are you? What’s your type when it comes to men?” Laura prompts from the side.
I nod, smoothing out the fabric of my dress a little as I prepare. “Well. I love reading and writing, it’s my dream to be an author, actually.” I say, smiling a bit as I thought of the days I spent back at home writing. “Uhm… I’m nineteen, I’ll be twenty in December… and my type?” I chew on my lip a little. “I’ve never really thought about it, but I guess someone sweet. Someone who loves me for me.” I nod a little, glancing at the camera for a moment before looking away. I was having a hard time picking somewhere to look, and I hoped I didn’t look like a nervous wreck with my eyes darting around.
“What would you do if you won the prize money?” Laura asks.
Without hesitation, I say, “Save my mom.”
“What’s wrong with her?”
I swallow thickly, pushing the tears that were welling up down. How embarrassing would that be, cry on camera on the first day? “She’s uhm… sick. She has moon sickness, and there might be a way to cure it, but it costs a lot of money. Me and my family don’t make a lot so there’s no way we could ever afford to help her without a miracle.”
“We’re sorry to hear that, Angel. Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans before we finish up?” Laura asks in a voice I suspect is fake sympathetic.
I shrug a little, glancing at the camera. “Just… I hope I can find someone here who is real, and genuine, and I hope everyone watching can help me by sending me good thoughts.” I say, smiling at the camera.
“Cut.” Laura says. “That was great, I love the good girl thing. People are going to eat it up. You can head back to the group, we’re done for now.” Laura says, spinning and strutting off without looking at me again, already pulling her phone out again to keep typing on it.
I blink a little at her sudden departure, and slowly stand up. That woman was going to give me whiplash. I start to make my way inside when one of the guys holding a microphone suddenly turns around, and I bump right into him, making him drop his microphone on the ground with a metallic clank.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry.” I say, dropping down quickly to grab the metal pole the microphone was attached to. “I wasn’t paying attention.”
“No, I whipped around on, that’s my bad.” I glance up at the sound of a deep voice speaking, and freeze when I meet the dark gray eyes of a man. He had squatted down with me, his hand also reaching to pick up the dropped microphone.
Jesus, even the crew members here were gorgeous.
His lashes were so long and were slightly curled, making his eyes look even more drool worthy. His skin was tan, and he had a little bit of scruff on his sharp jawline.
“Uh… sorry.” I stammer, standing up and handing him the microphone. I brush past him, shaking my head a little at what a dumbass I’d just acted like. I felt like I looked like a freak after rushing off like that.
If I was that much of a mess with a crew member, what was going to happen when I had one on one time with one of the guys?
The cameras start rolling again, filming the extremely awkward date between Victor and I. I kept my gaze down, trying my best to think of something, anything to say. Laura had said this wouldn’t make for good television, and she was right. No one wanted to watch two people sitting here making shitty pottery while not saying a word. That wasn’t entertaining for anyone.“So uhm…” I let out a small sigh of relief when Victor breaks the silence. “You and Chase, huh?” Not exactly what I wanted to talk about, but I guess it was better than nothing. “I wouldn’t go that far. We’ve only had the one date so far.” He raises an eyebrow at me, and I can’t help the small smile that breaks across my lips. He chuckles, shaking his head as he looks back down at the pottery video he’d started watching again. “Must have been a very good date.” The tension dissolves just a little between the two of us as we finally start talking like we weren't being held at gunpoint.I sigh, and glance at the cameras
This time, the car ride to the date was quiet. Laura was sitting up front in the passenger seat typing away on her phone. Unlike last time when Chase had been here, she was very much focused on what she was doing and wasn’t making any idle chit chat. She’d been very interested in small talk, then.Much to my surprise, August wasn’t a part of the crew helping with the date today. For some reason I had felt blindsided when I got into the car and I didn’t see him. It was like he was just supposed to be there. I wonder if he had lost interest. Despite knowing that was for the best, I felt a little… lonely without him in the car. Chase was going around making some pretty strong claims about our ‘relationship,’ not to mention he’d been there for the actual date. Any sane guy wouldn’t want anything to do with that. Especially when we’d only been on one date so far. It’s not like we had a strong foundation to get us through me going out with a bunch of other guys; it only made sense for him
“You should wear the white one. You always look so innocent and pretty in that color.” I glance at Chase, who was currently sitting in the corner of my bedroom at seven in the morning, ‘helping’ me pick out my outfit for today’s date with Victor. My alarm had gone off like normal, but a few minutes after it had, there had been a knock at my door. It was Chase, who had pushed his way in before I could protest and parked himself where he was now. He said he wanted to help me look my best for the cameras today. It was… weird. Very pushy, but I couldn’t figure out how I was supposed to get him out of my room. This was a social situation I had no idea how to navigate. Given his behavior, one would think he wouldn’t be excited about me going on a date with someone else. But he was acting more like a talent manager for me right now, rather than a guy interested in me. His emotions and intentions were all over the place, and it was giving me whiplash.“I was thinking about this one though.”
I had let myself relax too much. Who would have thought my biggest competition would be that pretty rich boy? I mean come on, him? Sure, he was tall and had that stereotypically good look going for him, but anyone with eyes could see him and Angel were not meant to be together. She was so kind and genuine. He looked at her like a pretty new tool he was trying to figure out how he could use best. With her sweet, warm smile and trusting gaze, there was no way she could hold her own against someone like him. If he said something like he liked her for real, I was worried she’d believe him. She looked like the type to take everyone for their word, because she herself would never lie about something like that. That thought just pissed me off even more, because it made me think about her facial expression if she found out why exactly it was Chase liked her so much.Watching them on their date had left a bad taste in my mouth. At first I’d felt like Angel and I were on the same page with th
Honestly, I was almost one hundred percent sure the second Chase and I were in the view of the other cast members, he would take a more backseat approach to this new apparent interest he had in me. However, despite having just spent the whole day together, and walking back to the house together, even when we walked inside he was still glued to my side. “Do you want me to make you a snack? I’m going to make a sandwich.” He asks once we’re inside. “I guess.” I say. I watched with bewilderment as he walked ahead into the kitchen. I could hear him being greeted by the other guys, asking how the date went. I was actually about to sneak away, let him get distracted with boasting about his charming skills, when he suddenly looked out the kitchen into the entry way where I was still standing with a shell shocked expression. “Are you coming?” He asks, raising a brow. “Oh, yeah.” I mutter, kicking my ass into gear. I was having a hard time wrapping my head around him wanting to spend even
“So, we saw some unexpected sparks between you and Chase today. What’s up with that?” Laura asks me later on as we’re once again sitting in the one on one interview room. “Uh. Well. I guess I’m his type…” I say kind of lamely. Honestly, I was still reeling from Chase’s confession myself. The guy hadn’t even looked at me since the show had begun, and now all of a sudden I was his number one target? It didn’t make any sense. Him and Emily had been all over each other. We were in different social classes, and while we had a good date, it had just been that. One date, one day together. There was no way he actually thought we were cut out for a relationship together. I can’t imagine bringing him home to meet my parents, or even worse, vice versa. His mother might weep if he brought me home to her, honestly. Laura gives me a sort of pinched laugh. It was clear she was equally confused about Chase’s sudden interest in me. She seemed tense, and maybe a little irritated that he had shown act
