CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE:

The knock came at 1:47 a.m. — three hard, deliberate strikes that made Lyra’s stomach drop straight through the floor.

Dimitri was already out of bed and reaching for the gun before the second knock finished. His voice was low and tight. “Stay with the baby.”

“No.” Lyra’s hands were already shaking as she pulled her own weapon from the drawer. “We do this together. I’m not sitting in that nursery wondering if you’re coming back.”

They moved down the hall in silence. The olde

CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE:“Are you and Daddy getting a divorce?”June’s question landed in the middle of the kitchen like a dropped plate. Lyra froze with the milk carton in her hand. Dimitri, who had been pouring coffee with his back to them, went completely still.Theo sat at the table beside his sister, eyes fixed on his cereal like it might disappear if he looked up. Anna banged a spoon against her high-chair tray, oblivious. The baby monitor on the counter stayed quiet.Lyra set the carton down carefully. “Why would you ask that, sweetheart?”June’s lower lip trembled. “Because you were yelling last night. And Daddy had a bag. I saw it. People only pack bags when they’re leaving and not coming back.”Dimitri turned around slowly. The color had drained from his face. “No one is leaving, June. Not me. Not Mommy. Not anyone.”“But you were fighting.” Theo’s voice was small and flat. “Really fighting. Not the regular kind where you make up before bed. The kind that feels like something is b

CHAPTER SIXTY:“You’re leaving?”Lyra’s voice was barely above a whisper, but it stopped Dimitri cold in the doorway of their bedroom. He had a duffel bag in one hand and his jacket in the other. The sun wasn’t even fully up yet.He didn’t turn around right away. “I need a few days to clear my head. That’s all.”“Clear your head.” She let out a short, disbelieving laugh that sounded more like a sob. “You pick a fight with me about how you keep risking your life, I tell you I’m scared of losing you, and your answer is to pack a bag and walk out?”He turned then. The healing wound in his side made the movement careful, but his eyes were hard. “I’m not walking out on the kids. I’m not walking out on you. I just can’t be in this house right now with you looking at me like I’m the same danger I’ve spent years trying to keep away from you.”“That’s not what I said.”“It’s what I heard.” His voice rose. “You stood there and told me you’re tired of being scared of me not coming home. You told

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE BREAKING POINT

CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE:“I can’t do this anymore.”Lyra’s voice cut through the quiet bedroom like glass. She stood at the foot of the bed, arms wrapped tightly around herself, staring at Dimitri as if she was seeing him for the first time.He pushed himself up against the headboard, wincing from the still-healing wound in his side. “What are you talking about?”“This.” She gestured at the bandages, the bottle of antibiotics on the nightstand, the gun that still lived in the drawer even though he claimed the danger was gone. “The lying. The bleeding. The nights I fall asleep wondering if you’re going to be alive in the morning. I can’t keep living like the next phone call or the next fever is going to take you from us.”Dimitri’s face tightened. “The threat is finished. I ended it.”“And you came home with a hole in your side you tried to hide from me!” Her voice rose, shaking with everything she had held in for days. “Again. You looked our children in the eyes, held the baby, kissed me,

CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT:“Dimitri, wake up. You’re burning up.”Lyra’s voice was sharp with panic as she pressed her hand to his forehead for the third time. The skin under her palm was scorching. His breathing had gone shallow and uneven sometime in the last hour. The bandage on his side was soaked through again, the edges of the wound angry and red.He tried to sit up and immediately fell back with a low groan. “I’m fine. Just need a minute.”“You’re not fine.” She was already reaching for the phone, heart slamming against her ribs. “Viktor! Get in here. Now.”Viktor appeared in the doorway within seconds, took one look, and cursed. “Infection. Bad one. We need a hospital.”“No hospitals,” Dimitri muttered, eyes half-closed. “Too many questions. Too much risk.”Lyra’s temper snapped. “I don’t care about the questions. I care about you not dying in our bed from a wound you hid from me. You’re going. End of discussion.”“Lyra—”“Don’t.” Her voice broke. “Don’t you dare fight me on this. I

CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN: The blood on Dimitri’s shirt wasn’t only his.Lyra noticed it the moment the adrenaline faded and the kids were finally back in bed. A dark, spreading stain near his ribs that hadn’t been there when he first walked through the door. Her stomach dropped.“Take the shirt off,” she said, voice tight.“It’s nothing—”“Take it off. Now.”He hesitated, then pulled the shirt over his head with a wince he tried to hide. The bandage on his arm was the least of it. A deep, ugly gash ran along his side, still seeping. The kind of wound that should have put him in a hospital hours ago.Lyra’s hands started to shake. “You said it was a graze.”“I said I was fine.”“You’re not fine!” Her voice rose, sharp with fear and fury. “You walked into this house, held our children, kissed me, and lied. You could have bled out on the way home and I wouldn’t have even known until it was too late.”Dimitri sat heavily on the edge of the bed, jaw clenched. “I needed to get back to you. To t

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE PRICE OF ONE LAST FIGHT

CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX:“You’re not going.”Lyra’s voice cracked across the kitchen like a whip. She stood between Dimitri and the door, barefoot, eyes red from a night without sleep, the baby monitor still clipped to her waistband.Dimitri stopped, gun already holstered, jacket half on. “Lyra—”“No.” She shoved a hand against his chest, hard. “You don’t get to walk out that door like this is just another job. Our newborn is upstairs. She almost died three days ago. June still wakes up crying from nightmares. Theo checks the locks twice before bed. And you want to go hunt some leftover ghost because Reyes showed up with a story?”His jaw tightened. “If I don’t go, that ghost comes here. To our house. To our kids. I am not waiting for that knock again.”“Then we both go,” she shot back, voice rising. “Or neither of us does. You don’t get to decide this alone. Not after everything we’ve survived together.”Dimitri’s eyes flashed with equal parts love and frustration. “You’re still recovering
