Chapter 5

Gena POV

It has been a week since Ethan's death and no one has spoken about it. Although he was a jerk for pointing fingers at me, I still cared about him. But his chapter had come to an end because of his lies.

His death was regarded as suicide but I doubted it was the source. Now I was the director of the company where he once managed.

"Director Gina, the president's secretary has requested that you provide a clear account of the company's business and expenses. He will be here by Tuesday to evaluate it. Please do not make any mistakes," the team manager from the finance department informed me.

I was piled with so much work that I began to wonder what Ethan did with his time. Sighing outwardly, I cracked my fingers and opened the first file before me.

The numbers I saw danced through my eyes and by the time I was done with everything, I discovered that Ethan had messed with the digits.

What was more frustrating was the fact that I had to make up for the lost money.

"Director Gina, good day," a woman with mild red hair walked into my new office which I had not taken the time to clean up.

"Starting from today, I will be your secretary. Please let me know if you have anything you want me to do," she said with a polite smile.

Finally, I could get some assistance. "I want you to help me check out some of these documents. If there is anything that you don't understand, let me know immediately," I packed some files and passed them down to her.

Still, there were many documents on my desk. I slumped back on my chair and groaned at how disorganized Ethan had been.

Maybe he deserves to be dead. I wouldn't be surprised if he kept a secret from me as well. He was too dirty and destructive. Worst of all, he never cared about the stress he put on me.

By the time I was done with everything on my desk, the day had ended. I missed my lunch and my new secretary whose name I haven't asked for was still working on her computer. She must be stressed out like me but what could we do when our president was a scary tyrant?

"Um," I knocked on the side of my door to get her attention. "You haven't told me your name," I reminded her with a slight smile. The muscles on my face were too tired to expand.

"Oh, my apologies, my name is Kira O'Neill. Are you leaving now?" She asked when she noticed my purse hanging on my shoulder.

"Yes, you can continue your work tomorrow. I have to be home to look after my kids," I muttered.

"Okay, good night," she said with a bow before I left the office.

As I walked out of the elevator, a lot of people glanced at me with words in their mouths. I am sure they would be talking about my sudden promotion and why I wasn't mourning my husband who recently died.

Well, I found out that we were not married in the first place. He had lied to me and used me for his good. I was able to find out about his lies through the lawyer who held his will.

The damn man had spent all his fortune gambling and that was the reason why he dipped his hands into the company's money. And now I was paying for it even though I was not related to him in any way.

I didn't mind the gossip that spread around the company and went back home to my kids.

"Mommy," they simultaneously called out after I entered the house. They were all alone for the whole day. Now that I can afford a nanny, I will have to employ one to care for my kids whenever I am at work.

Ethan never let me employ any nanny for him it was a waste of money.

"Did you two miss Mommy a lot? Oh, Mommy is sorry for coming home late. I had tons of work to handle at my office," I pecked the two of them and went into the kitchen which was in a mess thanks to their meddling hands.

"We forgive Mommy but are you not hungry?" They asked about playing with my hair.

"Mommy is hungry but I had to finish what your Daddy didn't complete," I told them how stressful my day was and they listened attentively.

"Mommy, that man was not our daddy. He was an imposter. How come you never noticed his sneaky behaviors," Zekria my daughter mumbled in her sweet soft voice.

My twins were extremely smart and observant. There was nothing I could hide from them for a long time. Their smartness seemed out of this world and sometimes, I had to shut them up from exposing their intelligence to people.

They were the only people who gave me happiness. It might seem untrue but they were good at comforting an adult more than I could.

"Hmm, I guess Mommy was too distracted to notice. I won't blame her, the man was a bonfire liar," Zekel, Zekria's twin brother added.

After a while, they left me in the kitchen and went to play with their toys. I took up the kitchen brush and scrubbed every corner until it was sparkling clean.

By the time I was done, my kids had gone to sleep. Thankfully, they had eaten the chips I left in the fridge just in case of emergency.

Tired of all the work, I collapsed on my bed without taking a shower. Tomorrow was going to be another busy day and I needed to wake up as early as five if I wanted to be early to work.

This was not the type of life I signed up for but there was nothing I could do but accept it. How frustrating.
