Chapter 3

Author: Nora Blythe
Upon closer inspection, I noticed that Stella had been wearing a ring on her right hand for a while, and it was a couple pair with the one on Damon's hand.

I smiled bitterly, feeling the last of my hopes completely dashed to pieces.

So, as it turned out, I was the only one kept in the dark about this.

"Sounds good."

I stood up amidst everyone's surprised expressions. I wasn't welcome in this place anymore, and I wasn't shameless enough to continue staying here anyway.

However, just as I was about to walk out of the main door, Stella suddenly called out to me from the back.

"Noah Mendoza!"

I didn't stop walking. She continued chasing after me.

She caught up to me and grabbed me by my sleeve, panting loudly as she looked at me with a dissatisfied look in her eyes.

"Why are you running away? Don't take what my parents just said to heart. Damon and I just have a really close relationship because we grew up together. Don't take it too seriously.

"That part about marrying him was also just a spur-of-the-moment thing that my parents decided by themselves. I haven't agreed to it yet.

"But you know, Mom and Dad are right. Your illness is really—"

She continued explaining herself to me frantically, but I cut her off at the end.

"You can't say that you don't know why I turned out like this, Stella Nielson."

Her face turned pale as she stopped short, stunned by my words.

I looked straight into her eyes.

If she really cared about me, she would have immediately defended me the moment her parents brought up the topic of marriage at the dinner table earlier. But instead, she just came out after me after the whole ordeal to give me weak excuses like this.

I suddenly chuckled out loud and said coldly, "Damon is very young and bubbly. He's your type, isn't he?"

I recalled the time when Stella and I first met each other. She was the one who fell for me at first sight. She was also the one who kept pursuing me and telling me that she loved me.

She also said that she would never let me die before she did.

I shook off Stella's hold on my sleeve and got into a cab. Then, I watched her from the rearview mirror, noticing that she was still standing there completely stunned instead of leaving.

I shut the curtains in the backseat of the car and felt my phone buzzing in my pocket. It was a text message from Damon.

"Don't you think that women prefer bright and bubbly people, Noah? If you'd just look at yourself in the mirror, you'd understand why Stella won't even bother looking at you anymore."

I pressed my lips in a thin line and deleted his text message before blocking him.

When the phone screen went out, I caught sight of my current appearance in the reflection. My cheekbones were protruding, my eyes were sunken, and I literally looked like I was about to die.

I sighed and asked the cab driver to drop me off at the hospital instead.

My attending doctor, Dr. Carl Peterson, was happy to see me there. He immediately dragged me to a full-body checkup. However, the outcome still wasn't optimistic.

"You'd have had a 50% chance of survival if you went through with the surgery the last time. But now, after the delay, it's a little…"

He paused mid-sentence and looked at me with a complex expression on his face.

"If you want to live, you really need surgery now. We can't afford to delay it any longer."

I looked at the hospital bill and spoke in a hoarse voice, "Will there be a 100% chance of survival if I had the surgery?"

Dr. Peterson hesitated. He didn't look like he was able to guarantee it.

I then handed him the medication that Stella had bought for me.

"Do these meds work?"

He just glanced at the boxes for a while before frowning hard and chiding me in an urgent tone.

"Are you crazy? There's no alternative medication for your illness! You can't just take random medication like this! Are you trying to shorten your own lifespan or something?"

I was extremely calm as he got frantic with me, putting the medicine away and speaking in a low voice.

"I don't have any money, Dr. Peterson. I can't even afford the 15,000 dollars needed for the surgery. So, we can just forget about the treatment."

"I never looked down on you!" Stella exclaimed. "I only switched out your medication because the one you were on had terrible side effects! I couldn't bear to see you throw up every day until you were unable to sleep at night from the pain. That's the only reason I switched it to a milder one!"And it wasn't that I didn't want to lend you the 15,000 dollars! I was just scared that you would use the money to buy more of those self-destructing medications for yourself. I didn't want you to become dependent on them!"I don't know what Damon said to you, but the only person I have ever loved is you!"As she finished speaking, she looked up at my expressionless face and hesitated. Her gaze then fell on Audrey next to me."Or, is it that you're leaving me because you've fallen for someone else? You're leaving together with her, aren't you?"Stella would rather hear me say that I'd fallen for someone else than believe that I didn't love her anymore. After all, she had always been a proud

"You have always been the person I'd loved from the very start! I only want to marry you!" Stella exclaimed, looking straight into my eyes.I could feel the love hidden within her eyes. A sudden sharp pain shot through my chest, and I suddenly felt my throat itch.I avoided her gaze and coughed lightly a couple of times."I suddenly feel like eating your banana bread. Can you make it for me?"Stella's eyes lit up at my request. She seemed to have suddenly come alive again as she nodded excitedly."I've improved my baking skills lately. Just wait here at the hospital for me. I'll head back and make some for you right away! Wait for me, alright?"She smiled sweetly at me until her eyes crinkled. This was the first time she'd smiled so happily in a long time. She finally left after tucking me in properly. I fixed my gaze on her back, waiting until she left before coughing violently in bed.…I'd asked Audrey to lie to Stella for me.The surgery had been a failure after all. I wa

"Noah? Are you still feeling unwell anywhere? Let me go and get the doctor…" Stella said.I subtly withdrew my hand from her grip without an ounce of warmth in my eyes."You don't need to keep me company in the hospital anymore. We've already broken up.""Are you still angry at me? Don't worry, I've already cut off all contact with Damon. I also told Mom and Dad that I was only marrying you. They've agreed to it. We'll go home and hold our wedding once you've recovered. Let's stay together for the rest of our lives."Her eyes were filled with hope, but I still didn't feel a thing."No. Let's not."The smile froze on Stella's face. She straightened up somewhat helplessly as she stared at me."I don't love you anymore, Stella Nielson. In fact, if you never saw my medical report, you would probably still think that I was lying to you. You've never properly looked at me even once ever since Damon came back."She kept shaking her head as she listened to what I said. She wanted to ex

I knew then that Stella truly loved me at that time.…I never received any more text messages from Stella during the week before the surgery. I thought that she'd finally thought things through and realized that there was no way for us to be together anymore. However, I never thought that she would suddenly barge into the hospital just as I was about to be wheeled out to the operating theater. She began shouting and screaming in the hallway of the hospital, crying, "Where is my boyfriend? His name is Noah Mendoza! Where is he?"Audrey just glanced at me and didn't stop Stella from barging in.The moment Stella saw me, she ran right into my arms, and I stiffened, my arms freezing mid-air.We hadn't seen each other in a long time. She'd lost a lot of weight. She also used to stand straight and tall, but now, it looked like she was burdened with a ton of weight on her shoulders that made her hunched over."I thought I wasn't going to be able to see you again for the rest of my li

Stella even began texting me with different phone numbers and harassing Audrey."Noah, I've found a medical team that can treat your condition. Where are you? Can you send me your location?"Your illness is very serious. Stop being so temperamental. I'll explain everything to you properly about Damon and me once you're back."I promise that I'll marry you if you'll be good and come back."Stella was still behaving the same way she used to in the past, refusing to give up on something the moment she set her heart to it. I knew that ignoring her and playing dumb wouldn't change her mind. Knowing her personality, she would still track me down no matter what. Also, there was the fact that she wouldn't stop harassing Audrey.I let out a long sigh at that thought and finally caved, Facetiming her ultimately."Noah! I knew that you would eventually come looking for me. Where are you now? I've searched everywhere for you. Please don't make me worried, okay?"I've spent a lot of money

I only turned my phone back on after the plane landed. Just a second after turning it back on, the phone rang loudly again."Aren't you going to answer that?" Audrey asked next to me. I hesitated for a while before finally answering it.It was Stella, just as I expected. However, her voice was hoarse and nasal, and she sounded like she'd been crying for a long time."Noah! Where are you? That medical report on the table is yours, isn't it?"Your illness worsened! Why didn't you tell me about it? I would never have changed your medication if I knew! I thought…"Where are you now? I've already asked the doctor about you, and you need surgery immediately! Just tell me where you are. I'll come and get you now. Let's get you treated, alright?"She sounded panicked and hysterical as she pleaded with me, crying and asking me where I was.I was a little dazed. It wasn't until then that I realized I'd left my medical report at home. But it didn't matter anymore, even if she saw it now.
