Chapter 7

Author: Alisha
Ethan's POV

I woke up with my head pounding.

All I did was have a few drinks with Lily last night. How the hell did I end up this wrecked?

I dragged myself to the living room and stopped cold when I saw birthday decorations everywhere. I stared at them before it finally hit me—yesterday was Aria's birthday.

I rubbed my temples and called my Beta, James. "Pick out a few of the best moonstone necklaces and bring them over. Now."

But when the door opened, it wasn't James standing there. It was Lily.

The sight of her at my villa entrance made my headache even worse. "Why are you here?"

Her lips immediately curved into a pout, and her eyes filled with tears as that soft Omega scent started rolling off her in waves. "I just wanted to see you, so I volunteered to make the delivery. I'm sorry—if you're mad, I won't come again."

I caved instantly and pulled her close. "Hey, that's not what I meant. Don't cry, okay?"

But Lily kept sniffling, tears streaming down her cheeks as her pheromones grew thicker.

I ran a frustrated hand through my hair. Just to end this whole scene, I said, "Stop crying. Whatever you want, just name it. I'll give you anything."

That finally got her to stop. Her voice turned soft and sweet. "Anything?"

"Yeah, anything."

"How about I stay here for a few days?" Lily smiled. "We could spend more time together. Wouldn't that be nice?"

The smile on my face froze instantly.

I'd made a promise to Aria long ago that I would never bring anyone else into our home. It was the most basic respect in wolf culture, the last boundary a mate should never cross.

I was about to refuse when I heard footsteps on the stairs and one of the maids greeting someone.

"Good morning, Luna."

I stood up quickly, ready to explain. But Lily spoke first.

"Good morning, Luna." Lily held up the velvet box containing the moonstone necklace. "I was just delivering your birthday gift from Ethan." She paused, her voice sweet and casual. "Oh, and there have been some rogues spotted near my place lately. It's not safe, so the Alpha said I could stay here for a few days. I hope that's alright with you?"

I frowned at her boldness. I'd never agreed to that.

I braced myself for Aria's reaction. She was going to lose it—I knew her temper. And then I'd have to spend the rest of the day calming her down.

But that didn't happen.

"Sure. Make yourself at home." Her voice was flat, devoid of emotion.

Lily was about to say something else, but Aria's words stopped her cold.

I hadn't expected Aria to agree so easily either.

I was just about to speak when Lily suddenly wrapped herself around my arm. "Ethan, see? Even Luna's okay with it."

She pressed herself against me deliberately, and her pheromones seeped into my skin. The rejection I'd been about to voice got stuck in my throat.

I looked up at Aria and finally noticed something was off. Her eyes were too calm—flat and still. And that signature scent of hers had almost completely vanished, like she was deliberately erasing her own presence.

I frowned. "Aria, you really don't mind?"

Her gaze swept over me, then dropped to where Lily's hands clutched my arm, but her expression didn't waver. "There's nothing to mind. She can stay wherever she wants."

She signaled for the maid to bring breakfast, then walked back to her room without another word.

Something about her retreating figure sent an unexpected chill down my spine.

Lily was thrilled and immediately said she needed to go pack. After she left, the whole villa went silent—so quiet it made me uneasy.

I couldn't focus for the rest of the morning. I tried to handle the pack business, but nothing sank in.

My wolf paced restlessly inside me, growling low like he was warning me I'd missed something important.

I made up excuses to knock on Aria's door several times.

"Lily can be pretty loud. You sure you won't mind her moving in?"

Aria was organizing her book collection. She didn't even look up. "I won't."

I wasn't ready to give up. "If you're upset, just tell me. I won't let her move in."

"I'm not upset."

Frustration clawed at me, sharper than anything I'd felt before.

I walked into the room and shut the door behind me. I looked at her, really looked at her this time. "Aria, I've told you—those she-wolves out there don't mean anything. They're just distractions. They'll never compare to you. So stop bottling everything up."

She finally stopped what she was doing and turned to face me. Her eyes were calm, completely still. No anger, no jealousy, nothing. "I already told you. I really don't mind."

Then she pressed her fingers to her forehead like she was exhausted.

That look on her face made me drop the careless act I always wore. Panic hit me out of nowhere.

"Why don't you mind?" My voice came out tight. "You weren't like this before."

She used to snarl at me. She used to rake her claws down the walls. She used to flood the room with her Alpha dominance until every Omega who dared come near me ran. Those fights drove me crazy, but at least they proved she cared.

This cold, empty calm terrified me more than her rage ever did.

Aria glanced at me and smiled, soft and manageable. "Isn't this better? You always wanted me to be like this, didn't you?"

She gestured toward the door.

"Ethan, I'm a little tired and I need some rest."

And just like that, I was dismissed.

Aria's POVThe small space went quiet for way too long.I stared at the silent man across from me, and I could feel my chest getting tighter by the second. If I stayed here much longer, I was going to suffocate. But I couldn't just run away, so I kept trying to pump myself up in my head, telling myself I could handle this.My hands were starting to go numb when Cameron finally showed up.He took one look at the scene and knew exactly what was happening. His eyebrow shot up, and he stepped right in front of me, putting himself between us."Damien, I already told you about me and Aria. Why are you scaring her?"He'd told him already?I looked up at Cameron without thinking. When their eyes met, Damien's tone softened a bit."That was just your side of the story. This is an important mate bond we're talking about, so I needed to verify things for myself."He paused and looked at me. "My brother said you're the bravest she-wolf he's ever met, and I can see he wasn't lying."I could tell th

Aria's POVThirty thousand feet up, soft clouds drifted past the window, close enough that I could almost reach out and touch them.I'd only dozed off for a bit, but when I opened my eyes, Cameron was staring right at me without blinking.I checked my phone and saw that only two hours had passed, and I couldn't help frowning. The second he noticed my expression, Cameron quickly handed me a cup of warm water he'd already prepared, and his voice came out tight with nerves."Did you have a nightmare? Or... was it a bad dream about something?"I was thirsty anyway, so I took the cup and drank a few gulps.I stared out the window for a while, and when I finally looked back, Cameron had this pitiful, hurt look on his face."Aria, I came clean about everything. Why won't you talk to me? Are you still mad at me?"That's when I realized I hadn't said a single word to him this whole time.At first, I'd been too shocked by everything he'd told me, my mind spinning through all the things that had

Aria's POV"The first time we met wasn't at that bar," Cameron said. "It was a month before that, at a pack gathering. You came with Ethan, but halfway through the night, he ditched you to dance with some she-wolf, and you sat alone in the corner drinking by yourself. Every wolf there was gossiping about you two through the pack link."His voice remained light, as if he were telling someone else's story. But I remembered that night clearly—it was the first time Ethan had humiliated me so publicly."I didn't really remember your name until you got drunk and smashed a bottle against Ethan's shoulder. The way you swung that bottle was so clean and decisive, and the things you said cut deep—you called him 'a waste of space who couldn't even measure up to a rogue Alpha.' Every wolf in the room went dead silent. You just ignored them all, grabbed your dress, and walked out like you owned the place. I couldn't forget that moment if I tried."Heat crept up my face. I barely remembered anything

Aria's POVWhile I stood there frozen, Ethan shoved Cameron back and raised his fist to strike—but then he looked up and saw me standing on the planter. He dropped his hand immediately and pushed through the crowd toward me."Aria!" His eyes lit up the second they found mine. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming to Switzerland? Do you have any idea how worried I've been? I couldn't find you anywhere, and I thought something happened to you—"I stepped down from the planter and looked at him calmly, my expression giving nothing away."Where I go isn't your business anymore. And I didn't come here alone—I came with my fiancé.""Fiancé?" Ethan's voice sounded hollow and broken, like someone had just driven a silver blade straight through his heart.I nodded slowly and waved Cameron over. "Cameron."The aggressive Alpha energy Cameron had been radiating a second ago vanished instantly, and he jogged over to my side. He blinked up at me with those innocent eyes and took my hand. "Aria, y

Ethan's POVI knew Lily had been outside all night. She'd been circling the house for hours, but she couldn't get in. The bond between us wouldn't let her cross the threshold—not anymore. The cold autumn air seemed to knock some sense into her, at least. By dawn, she was running a low fever, and her legs kept giving out. She wouldn't stop crying, and my phone kept lighting up with her pathetic messages begging me to let her in.I ignored every single one.The next day, the second I opened the door, Lily jolted awake—she'd barely been sleeping anyway. Her eyes flew open, and when she saw me heading for the car, she scrambled to her feet and grabbed my arm. Those eyes that used to get her whatever she wanted filled with tears again, and her voice came out all broken and pitiful. "Ethan, look at my face. Aria clawed me, and she said if I told you about it, she'd make it worse. Please, you have to—"I looked at her coldly, and my voice came out flat and hard—nothing like the way I used to

Aria's POVI watched Lily push herself off the ground, one hand braced against the dirt as she struggled to her feet. She started to go after him, but then something made her pause. She whipped around to face me, and that smug little smile spread across her face."Aria, I told you before—you don't stand a chance against me. You never did."Her voice dripped with triumph, and I could feel my wolf stirring inside me.I didn't say anything. I just took my time walking down the stone steps, one slow step after another, until I was standing right in front of her.I had half a head on Lily, so when I tilted my chin down, I could see every bit of that arrogant fire burning in her eyes.My grandmother's pocket watch—the one she'd deliberately pushed into the lake. The only thing I had left of her. And that was just today. This past year, she'd humiliated me at every turn, made sure I knew my place, made sure everyone knew I was nothing.I flexed my fingers and rolled my knuckles, keeping that
