Chapter 15- Veil of calm

The next morning brought with it a soft drizzle, the kind that blurred the outlines of the world and made everything seem dreamlike. Lily sat by the window of her room, staring at the gray sky, the soft patter of raindrops playing a lullaby on the glass. Her hands rested in her lap, her thoughts as scattered as the droplets outside.

She hadn't spoken much since Justin's visit. There was something about the way he said, "I'll tell you when the time's right," that kept echoing in her mind. She hadn't asked William about it either. After all, their conversations lately were clipped and impersonal. He’d been acting distant—not cruel, just emotionally unavailable, like a fortress with no door.

Nany entered quietly, carrying a tray with breakfast and herbal tea. "You need to eat something," she said, her voice warm but firm. She placed the tray on the table and opened the curtains slightly. "The rain looks beautiful today, doesn’t it?"

Lily offered a weak smile. "Yes. It feels like the world is pausing."

Nany sat beside her. "Maybe that's what you need too. A pause."

They ate together in silence, interrupted only by the occasional thunder. It was the kind of morning that invited reflection, and for Lily, reflection often brought pain. Still, with Nany around, she felt a little less alone.

Later, Nany suggested, "Let’s go for a drive. Just us. Get you out of this house for a while."

Lily hesitated. The idea of leaving the mansion felt both liberating and scary.

"I don’t know..."

"You don’t have to decide now," Nany replied. "But if we keep waiting for the perfect time, it may never come."

By afternoon, the rain had lightened into a mist. Lily agreed to go. William wasn’t around to object. He had left earlier for a business meeting, or so she was told.

The driver took them out to the outskirts of the city. Fields of mustard stretched out like golden carpets, and occasional farmhouses dotted the landscape.

"Feels like breathing again," Nany said, rolling down the window slightly.

Lily nodded, letting the cool air brush against her face. For a moment, she allowed herself to forget the ache in her chest.

They stopped by a quiet riverside. A wooden bench sat beneath a sprawling banyan tree. The sound of water was calming, almost like a secret being whispered endlessly.

Lily walked down to the riverbank. She pulled out a small stone from her coat pocket and looked at it before tossing it into the water.

Nany joined her. "What was that?"

"Just a memory," Lily whispered.

Back at the mansion, William stood by Selena’s portrait in the hallway, his hand tucked into his pocket. His eyes lingered on her smile.

He pulled out his phone and dialed.

"Have you found her yet?"

A pause.

"Keep looking. She couldn’t have vanished into thin air."

He ended the call. For days now, his investigators had been searching for Eliza, but there was nothing—no leads, no digital trail. It only deepened his suspicion that what happened to Lily wasn’t an accident.

He walked back to his study, only to find an envelope waiting on his desk. No stamp, no sender. Just his name, printed in neat capital letters.

Inside was a note on cream paper:

"She knew. She was about to tell you. - A Friend."

William stared at the words for a long time. His grip tightened. He looked over at the fireplace, the flames reflecting in his eyes. Selena. She had known something. And someone didn’t want her to speak.

In the evening, Lily and Nany returned. The moment they stepped inside, Lily felt the shift in energy. The silence wasn’t the calm kind. It was heavy, like the mansion was holding its breath.

She walked up the stairs and paused outside Selena’s room. The door was closed. She turned the handle slowly.

Everything was as she remembered. Except one thing—a pendant on the pillow.

She walked over and picked it up. It had two initials engraved: S & J.

Lily stared at it, her breath catching. Justin?

"Lily?" Nany called from the hallway.

Lily quickly tucked the pendant into her pocket and walked out. "Coming."

That night, Lily couldn’t sleep. She kept replaying the initials over and over in her head. Could Justin have been Selena’s boyfriend? Had he been hiding something all along?

She got up and opened the drawer where she’d hidden the file Justin gave her. Inside were photographs—Selena smiling at the riverside, standing beside a man whose face was always out of frame.

And a letter, torn halfway:

"You make me believe in forever, J. No matter what happens, remember that..."

The rest was missing.

A sudden knock startled her.

"Yes?" she asked.

It was William.

"Can I come in?"

She nodded.

He entered, looked around, and noticed the open drawer. "Still trying to put the pieces together?"

She didn’t answer.

"You shouldn’t stress yourself," he said softly. For once, his tone lacked its usual edge. "Grief is... not linear."

"Neither is truth," she replied.

He looked at her, as though seeing her differently.

"Rest," he said finally. "The storm hasn’t passed yet."

And with that, he left.

Lily sat alone in the silence, clutching the letter.

Somewhere in the darkness of the mansion, secrets curled like smoke, waiting to be seen.

She knew now: Selena had loved someone. Maybe it was Justin. She don't know any other person rather than Justin whose name starts with J. Maybe it was someone else.

But someone had silenced her.

And Lily wasn’t going to stop until she found out why.

The atmosphere in the office had shifted. Not in a way anyone could point out directly. There were no raised voices, no missed deadlines. But there was a certain weight in the air. Like something had been said without being spoken, and no one quite knew what to do with it.William had kept to himself.More than usual.Meetings were shorter. Emails, precise. Instructions, crisp. He didn’t linger at Lily’s desk like he sometimes did. He didn’t ask for updates in person. Everything came through formal channels. All professional. All distant.Clara noticed first."Is he... mad at you?" she whispered one afternoon, sliding into the chair beside Lily with a pastry in one hand and concern in her eyes.Lily shook her head. "No. At least, I don’t think so."But truthfully, she didn’t know. She hadn’t spoken to William directly since their ride back from the legal department two days ago. And while nothing terrible had happened, something unspoken had settled between them like mist.Ross, on th

The office was quieter than usual the next morning. The energy from the charity event had fizzled out, leaving behind the usual mess of paperwork, receipts, and unanswered emails. Lily walked in early, a fresh cup of coffee in hand, her heels echoing faintly on the polished floor. The walls, lined with soft sunlight, made everything feel a little too calm. She wasn’t sure if the awkward silence from the night before was still lingering in her own mind or if the air itself felt heavier. William had walked her to the car. He hadn’t said much. He rarely did. But something in his silence stayed with her all night, like a note that never faded.Ross was already in, seated on the corner of her desk, typing something quickly into his phone. He looked up as she entered and grinned."Early bird?""Trying to stay ahead of the inbox monster," she replied. He held out a second coffee. "Double shot. I guessed right."She blinked, surprised. "You did. That’s almost scary.""Lucky guess," he said wi

The morning air buzzed with quiet anticipation. The company was hosting its annual charity auction — a semi-formal affair with too much planning and far too little time. The hotel ballroom had been booked, the guest list finalized, and still, Lily felt the nerves dance beneath her skin. She stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the soft pastel blue dress Clara, a friendly office colleague had convinced her to wear. It wasn’t her usual style — high neckline, open back, cinched waist — but it made her feel oddly… elegant.“It brings out your eyes,” Clara had said with a teasing wink.A knock at her apartment door broke her thoughts. It opened a second later without waiting — Ross.He was new. Hired just a week ago as the interim PR head, temporarily replacing Samantha after her dramatic exit. Clara had handpicked him, claiming they needed someone with charisma and crowd-control experience. Ross certainly had both — easy on the eyes, with sharp features, a confident gait, and an annoyi

Later that night, Lily opened her inbox and found a strange email. No subject, no sender name. Just a line:"Watch your back. You’re playing in a bigger game than you think."Attached was a PDF: a conversation between Natasha and someone named Jimmy.Lily’s heart pounded.Jimmy = Justin Millar! She skimmed through the messages. It was simple official conversation, but nothing criminal. Still, Natasha and Justin were in touch behind the scenes. She picked up her phone and texted Nany:We need to dig deeper. The buzz of the grand company event still lingered in the air the next morning, though the glitz had faded into silence. Lily had left the venue early, the echoes of whispered judgments and fake smiles still haunting her. Now, as she stepped back into the office, everything looked the same—but felt entirely different. The office felt unusually still that morning—eerily silent, like the moment just before thunder cracks open a dark sky.Lily stood near the elevator, organizing the last few files she had retrieved from the records room. Her heels clicked softly against the marbled floor as she made her way to William’s office. She was early—perhaps too early. But after the week she had endured—being framed, humiliated in front of her colleagues, and barely getting through Natasha's sharp remarks—she had started arriving earlier and leaving later. It was the only way to keep her head above water. As she reached the CEO’s office, the door was slightly ajar. William was already inside, sta

The wind outside rustled gently against the curtains as Lily leaned against her kitchen counter, a mug of lukewarm tea in her hand. She hadn’t slept well. Not because of nightmares—those had become routine—but because of the weight of the week ahead.Today was the company’s grand annual event. The one Lily used to attend with pride as a regular employee. Now, she would be attending not just as an employee, not even as William’s secretary—but as a woman surrounded by whispers, half-truths, and layers of corporate deception. She hadn’t told anyone what she had found in the confidential emails, not even Justin. She had printed copies and tucked them under a floorboard in her apartment, far from the reach of anyone who might come looking. The dress code was formal. Lily had chosen a sleek, wine-colored dress that didn’t scream for attention, but gave her just enough of it. It wasn’t for William or anyone else—it was for her. A reminder that she hadn’t broken yet.By 5 PM, the event hall w
