Chapter 22

Are You Pregnant, Lyla?

Lyla Atelo.

I opened my eyes to find Sage's intense eyes staring at me. They were so intense that the first thing I did was suck in a breath.

"She's awake." His voice was robotic as he waved a hand to someone who was beside him.

When my eyes settled on the woman, I was surprised to see the school nurse rushing towards me with a stethoscope in hand. It took a while before I could remember what had happened. Nurse Temi checked all my vitals before turning to Sage to assure him that I was doing okay.

"What happened?" I couldn't help but ask.

His eyes roamed over my body, making me feel self-conscious and vulnerable at the same time to him. He licked his bottom lips slowly, and there wasn't a hint of smile on his face.

"I should be asking you what happened." He said immediately. "What do you remember? Who pushed you inside the pool?"

"Pushed?" I squinted slightly, trying to recall the details of the past few hours. "I was trying to stop a student from bullying another, and I slipped into the pool. No one pushed me inside."

The expression on his face told me he was not certain. "Are you sure? Rumors are saying you were pushed. The person is quite lucky that the area has no security cameras. That is why I have to rely on you now, Lyla. Who did this to you?"

When I thought harder, I recalled that I felt a slight pressure on my back before my face hit the cold water. I remembered beating the surface of the water and begging whoever was above that I couldn't swim. In fact, I heard Sara's voice in the background. She had told someone to go and alert Sage that I was drowning.

"Did anyone come to tell you who pushed me into the water?" My voice was soft.

He shook his head. "No, I was just passing by the gymnasium when I heard everything."

I knew Sara was one of the persons involved, but her earlier warnings made me sew my mouth shut. I couldn't tell him about her, it would only make things worse.

"Um, I'm so sorry for interrupting, Mr. Dominic," Nurse Temi looked scared but still determined as she approached us again with a frown on her face. "But it's about Mrs. Lyla's health."

That seemed to get Sage's attention and his eyes snapped to her immediately. "Speak. Is there a problem?"

"Not really, but..." She looked conflicted for a while before turning to me. "Mrs. Lyla... Your body seems to be reacting to something. Have you been feeling weird lately? Like nausea or dizzy spells?"

I sighed inwardly. How could she tell? I had forgotten to take my drugs today, and there were already signs on my body?

"No. I'm feeling well." I lied smoothly. I didn't want anyone to know what was happening to me, not my husband, and not even Sage.

"Oh, okay." Nurse Temi replied timidly. She clutches her clipboard tightly to her breasts. "I'm sorry, you can go ahead."

"You can leave. Go home." Sage told her lazily, but his eyes were on me. Searching mine intensely. Clearly not believing the lie I had just told.

I heard Nurse Temi squeaking a 'thank you' before she hurried out of the door. I wasn't comfortable lying down, so I pulled myself up and almost gasped in shock.

"School is already over?"

"Six hours ago, actually." Sage responded dryly. He sat forward and clasped his hands together... strong hands may I add...

I wouldn't have known that the day had gone by because the nurses' office was brightly lit. I looked around to find my phone, but I remembered that when I left my office, I didn't take my phone with me.

"Why did you lie to the nurse?"

The look on his face made my breath hitch. It was menacing, but at the same time... soft. It made something stir deep inside me. How was he able to read me like a book and know when I was lying or not?

"I don't know what you're talking about. I need to drink some water, my throat is parched." I told him, looking around for the water dispenser to avoid looking at him.

"The water from the pool wasn't enough?"

I nearly choked on my spit. I looked at him to check if he found the situation amusing, but I couldn't tell. The only thing that seemed to catch my eyes was a barely lifted lip to the side. But, his eyes darkened almost immediately and he went back to being cold.

"Are you pregnant?" He asked the question right off the bat.

"What?" Even I could not believe my ears. "Excuse me?"

"Are you pregnant, Lyla?" He didn't bat an eye. "Nauseous? Dizzy? As far as I can tell, those are signs and symptoms of pregnancy."

"They are also signs and symptoms for other illnesses! They aren't necessarily for pregnancy!"

"You haven't answered my question, Lyla." He ignored my outburst. He was only fixated on one thing. "I don't mind if you're pregnant for me."

I almost scoffed. "Two weeks isn't enough to know if one is pregnant. Nor is it enough to see the signs and symptoms. And why would I be pregnant for you? What about my husband?"

His mood seemed to worsen at the mention of my husband. He tsked and shook his head.

"You haven't answered my question, Lyla. Don't make me ask again. This time, I don't care if it is for me or for your husband, but are you pregnant?"

"I can't get pregnant! I'm infertile." I tried biting my tongue, but the words were already out of my mouth.

Why did I have to tell him? I could have just said 'no'! Why did I feel the need to explain my condition? Even Michael didn't know I was infertile because we never tried for children. I lifted my gaze to stare at him, and he was already looking at me with a complicated gaze.

"Let's get you home." He finally said after a while, rising up from the chair to his full height. "You've had a long day."

She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not

Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you

Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I

Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't

I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
