Elise

The steady beeping dragged me back to consciousness.

My eyelids felt heavy. My body hurt everywhere. The scent of antiseptic filled the air.

For several seconds I stared blankly at the ceiling, wondering how I got here.

Then memory returned.

And I jolted up from the bed.

I remembered the painting and how Elliott pushed me down the stairs. My hands flew to my stomach as panic flooded my chest.

"No..." Came my horrified whisper.

The last I remembered, I was bleeding profusely. Had I lost my baby?

No! No! Not my baby! This couldn't be happening to me.

Just then, the nurse entered.

. “Miss Thorne, you’re awake. Please try to stay calm—”

I began to shake violently, clutching at my abdomen. “My baby… where’s my baby? I was bleeding so much… is my pup okay?”

“Miss Thorne, you need to calm down,” she said gently but firmly, holding my shoulders as I tried to sit up. “You suffered a severe fall. We’ve stabilized you, but you must rest.”

Her careful words and the pity in her eyes told me everything I needed to know.

She wasn’t saying it was fine. She wasn’t reassuring me that my baby was safe. Fresh tears spilled down my cheeks as a raw sob tore from my throat.

Moon Goddess, why me? Why would you take my pup from me?

The future I had secretly imagined with my baby was gone.

And through all of it I saw Elliott.

Choosing Lucia.

Again.

He pushed me down the stairs trying to protect her.

I glanced at the nurse. "Has Elliott come to see me since then?"

She hesitated. "You mean, Alpha Elliott?"

"Yes" I replied, sharper this time.

“He’s in the hospital right now… but in another room.”

What other room could he be in, when I, his mate had almost bled to death after loosing his pup?

Rage ignited beneath the sorrow, hot and unforgiving. "Take me to him!" I ordered the nurse.

The hallway blurred as I clutched the wall for support, following the direction the nurse had reluctantly given.

Each step sent fresh pain through my battered body, but nothing compared to the hollow ache in my womb.

Then I saw them through the half-open door of the private room. Elliott sat next to the chair on the bed. He was rubbing a soothing balm on Lucia's face, staring at her so endearingly.

It looked like they were in their own bubble.

I watched as the same hands that shoved me down the stairs stroked her face, and my breath hitched sharply.

The pain I felt turned into something sharper. Rage.

Pure rage flooded my veins and hot tears spilled down my cheeks. I forcefully opened the door.

Elliott's eyes widened when he saw me.

"My daisy..." he began.

"Don't" I spat, my voice trembling but laced with venom. "Don't call me that!"

"You pushed me down the stairs, I bled..."

I was about to add; 'I lost our pup' but I didn't have the courage to. I still couldn't believe it.

"... I almost died. You were supposed to be by my side, taking care of me but you go be with her?" My voice went up with emotion.

"Don't be dramatic, Elise!" He snorted. "You didn't almost die. For goodness sake, it was just a fall..."

"I was bleeding!" I screamed at him.

He stared at me, visibly taken aback by my outburst.

"I hired the best doctors for you and they told me they were able to stop the bleeding and you were fine"

I wasn't fine! I'd just lost my baby, damn it!

But he didn’t care. Only Lucia mattered.

"You hired the best doctors..." I repeated the words to myself, trying to make it make sense.

"So that makes it okay?"

He wiped his face in frustration. "What more do you want, Elise?" He asked. "Lucia's face was bruised from the slap you gave her so I had to take her to the hospital and tend to her"

"Liot;" Lucia purred. "I'm okay, you can go stay with Elise. She looks angry"

"No dear, I'll stay with you till you get better" he replied.

I scoffed. Two strikes!

One for pushing me down the stairs and the second one was for...

Scratch that! I wasn't supposed to give him any chances in the first place.

I'd made a mistake that cost me my pup.

"I'm done with this" I said in a resigned tone. "I want out"

A disbelieving look crossed his face, then he chuckled. "You know what, Elise? Why don't I tell Tyler to take you home. We'll talk more when I return"

"I want to break our mate bond!" I reiterated forcefully.

"Stop the theatrics, Elise" he said smugly. "I know how much you love me"

"That was before you pushed me down the stairs!" I hissed.

"You know damn well it was a mistake" he interjected.

I rolled my eyes. What a pathetic excuse.

Choosing Lucia over me for three years certainly wasn't a mistake.

"I don't care" I said. "I'll break the bond so you can go be with Lucia"

This time, he laughed outright. My fingers curled into fists as I let his mocking laughter drag on.

"You can't break the bond, Elise" he scoffed. "You're wolfless"

"Watch me!" I replied and I removed my inhibitor patch. Now my powers flowed freely.

"I, Elise Thorne of the Frost moon pack reject you, Elliott Draven, Alpha of the Frost moon pack" I said coldly.

"Sure" he replied as his lips curled in mockery and doubt. "I accept your rejection"

The words had barely left his mouth when the bond snapped.

A violent force slammed into him.

His body jerked violently as the severance ripped through us both.

His confident smile vanished and his eyes widened in horror.

Then panic.

"H-how... how did you..."

He couldn't even finish the sentence.

I met his stunned gaze without an ounce of pity.

"I'm not wolfless, you asshole!" I spat, turned on my heel and walked away.

Chapter 113EliseThe stone sat dark and unassuming in Kael's trembling palm, and yet I felt it the moment I drew close enough — a low, patient pull against the golden-dark-silver current beneath my ribs, the same particular quality of attention I remembered from the mirror's hungry gaze, except colder, older, entirely without the mirror's calculated cruelty. This wasn't hunger reaching for me. It was something considerably more unsettling: recognition, calm and absolute, as though whatever the stone connected to had simply been waiting, patient beyond any measure I could properly comprehend, for me to finally arrive close enough to notice it."Don't touch it," Kael warned, though I hadn't moved to. "Elise, I don't think it means harm exactly. But I don't think it means anything gentle either.""Who placed it among our supplies," Alaric demanded, his sword already half-drawn, sweeping the courtyard with the sharp, wary focus I'd come to recognize as his particular brand of controlled

King AlaricDawn arrived pale and reluctant over the palace, and I stood at the war room's window watching the last stars fade while the household stirred to life around me — servants carrying bread and dried meat toward the courtyard where our small, exhausted alliance would soon gather, guards checking supplies for a journey none of us fully understood the shape of yet.I had not slept. I had tried, briefly, lying beside Elise while she finally succumbed to a few hours of genuine, dreamless rest, but every time I closed my eyes I saw the architect's borrowed face, heard the messenger's grim report, felt again the sickening, formless white of a reality nearly unmade around us. Sleep, it seemed, had decided I'd earned a reprieve from its comfort for at least one more day.A soft knock drew my attention from the window, and I turned to find Aurelia in the doorway, Wren asleep against her shoulder, her own face carrying the particular exhaustion of a new mother who had not been permitte

EliseThe messenger's words hung in the torchlit courtyard like a blade suspended mid-fall, and for a long moment nobody moved. I felt the cold work its way up from my stomach before my mind had even finished processing what had been said. Converging. Not simply failing in separate places, the way the Eastern Reaches and the Frostbound Reaches had failed — but drawing together, deliberately, toward something.I looked at Alaric first, the way I always did now when the ground shifted beneath me, and found him already watching me, his jaw tight, his eyes carrying the particular grief of a man who had hoped, only minutes before, that the worst of this endless night might finally be behind us."Converging where," he asked the messenger, keeping his voice steady though I could feel, through the bond still humming faint and constant between us, how much that steadiness cost him.The messenger swallowed hard, clearly reluctant to be the one carrying an answer nobody in that courtyard wanted

Elise"The First Isolation," I repeated, the words settling cold and heavy into the courtyard's torchlit silence. "You're saying this entire pattern—the Unwritten, the Devourer, this scholar's own corruption—all of it traces back to a single, original guardian?""That's what I remember being told," the scholar said, his unfamiliar face still carrying the fragile, disoriented wonder of someone newly returned to himself after centuries of borrowed purpose. "Whether it's true, I cannot say with certainty. Memory this old, this buried, doesn't return whole. It returns in fragments, and fragments can be misleading.""But it would explain the pattern," Ismene said slowly, working through the implications with visible unease. "Every threshold we've encountered guards against a different manifestation of the same underlying wound. Hunger, forgetting, isolation itself. If they all trace back to a single, original source—""Then sealing individual thresholds was never going to be enough," Alari

King AlaricThe architect stood frozen at the courtyard's edge, his composed, ancient certainty cracking visibly across features that had, only moments before, worn Reyes's familiar face with such confident, mocking ease."You should not exist," he said, and for the first time since he'd revealed himself, I heard something raw beneath his layered, patient voice—not simply frustration, but genuine, unmistakable fear. "I calculated for resistance. I calculated for shared strength countering isolation. I did not calculate for love existing independent of causality itself.""Then perhaps," Elise said, stepping forward despite her obvious exhaustion, her voice carrying steady, unshaken resolve, "that's precisely because you've spent so many centuries as something other than yourself, wearing borrowed faces and manufactured grievances, that you forgot what it actually feels like to choose someone freely, without calculation."The architect's expression flickered, something ancient and burie

EliseThe light didn't fade. It simply *was*, endless and blinding, and I felt my own sense of self stretching thin across it the way it had stretched thin in the Devourer's frozen mirror—except this time, there was no witness left to anchor me, no shared circle holding steady against the unraveling.*Alaric.* I reached for him through our bond and found him there, faint but present, his fear tangled with mine in the formless white."I'm here," his voice came, distant but unmistakable. "Elise—I don't understand what's happening. I can't see anything. I can't feel the ground.""Neither can I," I said, forcing steadiness into words that felt increasingly abstract, increasingly difficult to hold onto as concepts at all. "The architect said he was unraveling the moment everything began. Alaric—I think we're caught somewhere between what happened and what he's trying to make happen instead.""Then fight it," he said, fierce despite the fear threading through his voice.
