Dante’s POV

The first thing I heard was Valentina screaming her mother’s name.

“Sofia!”

I turned toward her immediately.

She was standing in the middle of the chapel, Isabella pressed against her chest, staring at the empty space where Sofia had been seconds earlier.

The candles had gone out.

Smoke hung in the air.

My ears were still ringing from the gunshot.

“Valentina, stay down.”

She didn’t listen.

She ran toward the spot where Sofia had disappeared.

I caught her around the waist before she

Valentina’s POVI couldn’t move. The woman standing in the doorway looked like Emilia. Not similar. Not close.Exactly like her.Same dark hair.Same eyes.Same small line beside her mouth.Even the way she stood with one hand resting against the doorframe reminded me of Emilia.Dante stared at her.His face had gone completely blank. The woman smiled.“You remember me.”Dante’s voice was barely audible.“Who are you?”She looked at him for several seconds. Then she said,“Your mother.”Emilia made a broken sound behind us.“No.”The woman turned toward her.“Still pretending?”Emilia shook her head.“You died.”The woman smiled.“That’s what you told him.”Dante looked between them.“Mom?”Emilia couldn’t answer. The woman stepped into the room.“My name is Elena.”Dante stared at her.“Elena.”She nodded.“You were three years old when you stopped calling me that.”My skin prickled.Dante took a step backward.“I don’t remember you.”“I know.”“Why?”“Because they made sure you woul

Dante’s POV“She died.”The words stayed in the air.I couldn’t make them fit.Not after everything we’d learned. Not after four years of being told one child had died, then discovering two babies, then three, and now apparently four.I looked at Sofia.“Who told you that?”She wiped beneath one eye.“Adrian.”“Do you believe him?”“No.”That answer came too quickly.“Then why did you say she died?”“Because that’s what they wanted everyone to believe.”Valentina stepped closer.“Who is she?”Sofia looked at her.“The fourth baby.”“Her name?”“I don’t know.”Valentina’s face tightened.“You don’t know?”“I was never allowed to see her.”“Then how do you know she existed?”Sofia looked at Adrian.“Because I heard her.”The room became quiet.“You heard her?” I asked.Sofia nodded.“After they took you and the twins away, they brought me downstairs.”“Where?”“The old nursery.”I remembered the hidden room. The photographs. The fourth bassinet. The scratched-out names.“What happened t

Valentina’s POV“Hello, Daddy.”Nobody moved. For a few seconds, I honestly thought I had misunderstood her.The woman standing behind us looked to be in her mid-twenties. Dark hair. Pale skin. A small scar above her eyebrow. And the eyes. Those were Dante’s eyes. The same dark eyes that could make a room go quiet without him saying a word.Dante stared at her.His gun was still in his hand, but the weapon had lowered without him realizing it.“No,” he said quietly. The woman smiled.“You always say that.”Adrian watched him carefully.I looked at Dante. He looked as confused as I felt.“Who is she?”He didn’t answer.I stepped closer to him.“Dante.”His eyes never left the woman.“I don’t know.”The woman flinched. For the first time, the smile disappeared.“You really don’t remember me.”“I don’t.”She nodded slowly.“I knew you wouldn’t.”Adrian sighed.“This is exactly why I told you not to come here.”I turned on him.“You’ve been keeping her here?”“She chose to stay.”The woma

Dante’s POVOne hour. That was all they gave me.I stared at the message on my phone until the words blurred.YOU HAVE ONE HOUR.Then the second line.OR YOUR FIRSTBORN DIES.My firstborn.I didn’t even know who she was.Not really.I knew there had been a baby.I knew there had been a night in a hospital I couldn’t fully remember. And now someone was telling me that child was alive. My daughter.Valentina touched my arm.“Dante.”I looked at her.Her face was pale, but she wasn’t crying. Not yet.“She’s alive.”I nodded.“For now.”Carlo came closer.“Show me.”I handed him the phone. His expression hardened when he saw the photograph.“This was taken recently.”“How do you know?”“The camera.”He zoomed in.“The image is from a digital security system. Whoever took it wanted us to know they could watch her.”Valentina looked over his shoulder.“Can you find where?”“Not from this.”“Then what good is it?”Carlo didn’t answer.I took the phone back.“Saint Aurelia.”Valentina looked

Valentina’s POV“Daddy… I’m here.”The voice came again.Soft.Close.I couldn’t see anything. The lights had gone out completely, leaving the hidden room in darkness. For a few seconds, nobody moved. I could hear Dante breathing beside me and the faint sound of someone shifting somewhere behind us.Then I felt his hand find mine.“Stay close.”“I am.”His fingers tightened around mine. The little girl’s voice came again.“Daddy?”Dante swallowed.“Where are you?”Nothing. Then came a small laugh. Not frightened.Almost playful.I hated how familiar it sounded.“I’m here.”A flashlight suddenly cut through the darkness.Carlo stood in the doorway, his weapon raised.“Everyone all right?”Dante turned toward him.“Where’s the girl?”Carlo frowned.“What girl?”“The little girl.”“What little girl?”I stepped forward.“She was standing right here.”Carlo looked around the room. There was nobody there. My stomach tightened.“She was here.”“I believe you.”His eyes moved toward the hallw

  • My Ex chose My Twin, I Married His Billionaire Stepuncle    CHAPTER SEVENTY-SIX

Dante’s POV“Daddy?”The word stopped me.Not because I hadn’t heard it.Because I had.Too many times. In dreams I couldn’t remember when I woke up. In the pieces of memory that came to me at the worst possible moments. A child’s laugh. Small fingers wrapped around mine. A woman’s voice telling me to stay. And now that little girl was standing at the top of the stairs, looking straight at me.She couldn’t have been more than six.Her dark hair fell around her shoulders in loose curls. She was barefoot, wearing a pale yellow dress that looked too big for her. One hand held the wooden railing. The other was wrapped around a small stuffed rabbit. She stared at me for several seconds. Then she smiled.“You came back.”Nobody moved.I looked at Valentina. She was beside me, frozen.“What did she just call you?” she whispered.I couldn’t answer. The little girl came down one step.“Daddy?”This time, there was no doubt. My chest tightened.I took one step toward her.The woman standing nea
