Chapter 1

They both froze. Elena didn't reach for a blanket to cover herself. She reached for Julian’s arm, shrinking back as if I were the predator in my own bedroom.

"Clara..." Julian stood up, his face hardening almost instantly into a mask of cold defense.

"It’s not what it looks like. I had a panic attack. I was afraid to be alone." Elena defended, still hiding behind Julian.

"A panic attack that required you to be in my bed, eating my food, with my fiancé’s hands on you?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs so hard it hurt.

"Don't start with the drama," Julian spat, his guilt turning into a familiar, icy aggression.

"You’ve been gone for three months, obsessed with your career. You left me alone with Elena in the house. What do you expect?”

He stepped in front of her, shielding her from my gaze. "Stop blaming her for anything. She didn't do anything.”

He turned to look at Elena, his eyes softened quickly. “I like her. It’s my fault, not hers.”

‘I like her,’

These words kept echoing in my head like a harsh reminder of how unreliable a man’s heart could be.

Three years ago, when media people were after me, trying to figure out what connection I had with the city’s most eligible bachelor, he held my hands and announced to the world, “I like her. Now, stop disturbing our peace.”

At that time, I was overwhelmed by his protectiveness. He was like my shield against the world.

Now, the same person had been shielding another woman against me.

“So, you aren't even pretending to hide your affair with…” I choked, looking back at Elena, I added, “I thought we were like sisters!”

“I said it's not her fault.” He snapped back, “If you’re going to be mean to her, let's go somewhere else to talk."

I looked at the woman I called my sister and the man I called my soulmate. The betrayal was a physical weight, crushing the air from my lungs.

"This is my house, Julian," I said quietly, my voice trembling despite my effort to remain calm. It was the first gift from Julian after our relationship became official. He had told me that as long as he was alive, no one could ask me to move out of the house.

But today, he was asking me to leave.

For Elena, the woman he claimed to hate just three months ago.

He didn't say anything. His eyes turned dark, showing the cold and demeaning side of him that he used to deal with his business rivals.

He simply grabbed my hands and dragged me out of the house. After ten minutes, his car stopped in front of a rental building.

He then pushed a card before me and said, “Take whatever price suits you. Elena loves that house. I can't see her sad.”

“You can live here. I have paid the rent for the next ten years.”

“Three years of my love and devotion for you, Julian, and you are repaying me like this?” I asked, my voice trembling.

My heart was bleeding inside. Not because of what he offered for what he took from me, but how casually he was explaining everything, like it was just a business deal for him.

“I have also paid a huge amount to secure your mother’s trust from your father. Our separation will not hurt your mother’s trust. In return, I only want you to be good to Elena. She doesn't want to lose you as a friend.”

“A friend?” I laughed; the word felt like a joke to me. “After breaking my home, she dares to call me her friend?”

“It was not her fault, Clara. You and I were never meant to be. Within three years, I had already started feeling bored with you. But Elena is different.”

“She is lively and vivid. It's natural for any man to court her over you.”

Julian’s words cut deep through my heart like a blade. A year ago, when I took Elena in, he had degraded her for the very same reason.

“She wears revealing clothes, giggles at every man, and behaves like a slut. I don't blame her husband for divorcing her.”

I hadn't talked to him for weeks after his harsh remarks about my friend. Even three months ago, when I was leaving for my business trip, he was very displeased with living with her.

“You want me to share the roof with her. I have a reputation to maintain in public, Clara. Do you have any idea what people will talk about me if they see me with a woman like her?”

I wondered how quickly people’s hearts change. In just three months, suddenly Elena was the woman every man wanted, and I…

I was the woman who could easily be discarded?

"Please, Clara..." she whimpered, sinking to her knees on the sidewalk, right there in front of the city's elite. "I'm your sister. You said so yourself.""The sister I had died the night she walked into my bedroom with another man," I said firmly. "I’m not your savior, Elena. And I’m certainly not your friend. If Julian is as dangerous as you say, call the police. That’s what strangers do when they’re in trouble."My car pulled up to the curb. My driver opened the door, and I stepped inside without looking back."Clara! You can't leave me like this!" she screamed, her voice cracking against the polished glass of the window. As the car pulled away, I watched her through the rear-view mirror—a small, broken figure kneeling in the glow of the streetlights, still waiting for someone else to fix the mess she had made.Behind her, I saw a familiar frayed trench coat stepping out from the corner of the building. Julian. He didn't look at me. He was staring at Elena with a look of cold, simm

I thought Julian's chapter in my life would be closed, and that would be the last time I saw him. But it was just the beginning. He started texting me that same night. I wondered how he got my number. My phone buzzed incessantly on the nightstand of my hotel suite. I didn’t have to unlock it to see the desperation bleeding through the notifications.Julian (11:42 PM): She’s screaming again, Clara. Every time I look at her, I feel sick. How did I ever choose her over you?Julian (11:50 PM): I caught her kissing our neighbour, and when I confronted her, she said he had bought her a designer dress that I couldn't, and she was just thanking him. How did I end up with such a whore?Julian (1:15 AM): She seduced me, Clara. I was loyal to you. It's her fault. Just give me one more chance. Please, I’ll never betray you again.I stared at the screen for a moment, feeling a cold sense of detachment. A year ago, he told me it was not her fault but his. He told me he wanted her. Now, he was blami

A year later, I was back. The London fog had suited me, but the bright, sharp skyline of New York was a reminder of how much I had grown in a year. I wasn't the same Clara who had fled in a haze of betrayal. I was the lead counsel for one of the largest conglomerates in Europe, my name now synonymous with a ruthless, unshakable brilliance.I was back for a week to finalize the opening of our East Coast branch. After a morning of high-stakes meetings, I met my old friend and ex-assistant I had left my law firm with, at a quiet, understated bar in Midtown—the kind of place where privacy was as expensive as the scotch."You look good, Clara," she noted, leaning back. "London looks good on you.""I feel good," I replied, taking a sip of my drink. I didn't ask, but she knew me well enough to provide the one update I hadn't gone looking for."In case you were wondering," she began, her voice dropping an octave. "The 'Golden Couple' didn't even make it six months in love. Julian’s law firm f

The aftermath was more explosive than a New York summer storm. By the time I reached my car, the footage had already bypassed the ballroom walls. In the age of social media, a billionaire’s infidelity caught on 4K video wasn't just gossip; it was a viral hot topic in the city.Within forty-eight hours, the "Morgan Empire" began to fracture. Julian’s father, true to his word, issued a public statement through the board of directors, formally stripping Julian of his CEO title and placing him on an indefinite leave of absence from his company. The Morgans' family legacy was built on a foundation of old-money reputation and "traditional values," and Julian had tainted it for a few months of "submissive" flattery.Julian was only left with his law firm, which he had established. But its condition was also not very good. He was losing his clients continuously. Employees were worried about their salaries and began resigning. His clients didn't care about his heart; they cared about his judgm

When the light returned, it wasn't a vlog of their love. It was a security feed from my own bedroom, dated two months before our breakup. It showed Elena walking through my closet, mocking my clothes, and Julian laughing as he told her how much easier she was to control than I was. Then, the audio kicked in."You make me feel better than Clara, El." Julian’s voice boomed through the speakers. "She doesn't know as many skills as you do. You really know how to turn me on. You are submissive and easy to control, while she is… very challenging.” “You shouldn't talk about her like that,” Elena's voice sounded, laced with feigned concern, “After all, she is your fiancée and… my friend. I won't let you talk badly about her.”Julian's voice sounded back, laced with lust and impatience, “So what? She is in the UK at the moment. She doesn't know you are in her bed, in her room. With her fiance…” After that, the sound that echoed was the sound of kisses and smooches. The silence that followed

Three days later, Julian burst into my office. The heavy oak doors slammed against the wall with a violence that made my assistant gasp. He didn't look like the poised billionaire the media adored. His tie was loose, his hair was a mess, and his face was flushed with a dangerous heat."Clara! Have you lost your mind?" he roared, slamming a folder onto my desk. "Did you actually go to Elena’s parents? Her father called her this morning—he disowned her! He called her a 'shameful thief' and told her never to show her face again. She’s been locked in the bathroom for hours, sobbing that she wants to end it all. Are you happy now?"I didn't even look up from my laptop. I calmly highlighted a row on my spreadsheet before speaking. "Actions have consequences, Julian. If she didn't want her parents to know she was a homewrecker, she shouldn't have moved into my bed the moment I stepped onto a plane."A pang of bitterness flickered in my chest. I had spent tens of thousands of dollars clearing
