Chapter 3

Author: Three Strips
I placed my trust in him and learned to “understand” his difficult predicament.

As a result, my family members mocked me behind my back. They said I had worked so hard to provide for this adulterous pair so that they could live a happy life together.

I used to fight back and shout at them, “My husband is just taking pity on Anna, so he’s just helping her out. I trust them!”

In return, Jonathan kept two households while keeping me in the dark.

I ended up becoming a laughingstock.

I raised my hand and slapped Jonathan across the face.

“How could you still have the nerve to say something like that?

“Jonathan, until the divorce is finalized, I don’t want to see you ever again!”

I pulled my luggage bag and headed toward the school dormitory.

There would be one more quota eligible for permanent position in the city.

The principal told me that if I could achieve the “Outstanding Teacher” award this year, I could fill the quota.

I woke up early in the morning and worked till late at night by participating in school activities, just for the position.

I took on any work that other teachers did not want to do.

After two months without a break, I worked myself into collapse.

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a bed in the clinic.

My parents sat beside me.

“Nancy, you’re a commander’s wife, yet you’re looking in your gift horse’s mouth. Why push yourself this hard?

“Look at you. You’re all skin and bones. It breaks my heart.”

Why were they here?

I pinched myself hard before I was sure it was not a dream.

My eyes reddened, and I sobbed. “Dad, Mom, I’m not throwing a tantrum. I want to divorce Jonathan for real.

“I’m fighting for the chance to return to the city. When I get it, I’ll take you with me.”

When one was sick, they became more fragile than usual.

At that moment, my heart grew tender enough to forgive my parents for helping Jonathan hide the truth from me.

I could let go of anything else as long as we were united.

But my mother looked troubled. She let out a sigh.

“Nancy, we came to discuss something with you today.

“You’ve lodged a report against Jonathan to his superior. As a result, he was penalized.

“Despite all this, Jonathan doesn’t blame you. He’s also aware that you’re trying to earn the quota to return to the city, and he happens to have one in his hands.”

My father quickly nodded.

“As long as you agree to take part in the ceremony to acknowledge Anna as part of our family, Jonathan will allow you to fill the quota.”

That tiny spark of hope in my heart was completely gone.

They were here for Anna’s sake again.

My parents wanted to acknowledge an outsider as their daughter.

They were worried about Anna’s reputation, hence they took the initiative to come to me.

I blinked and allowed tears to slide down my cheeks freely.

I exhaled weakly.

“Fine. I agree.”

My parents went all out for the ceremony in acknowledging Anna as their daughter.

Everyone in our family attended the ceremony.

Anna and Jonathan walked hand-in-hand, as if they were a perfect couple.

I, on the other hand, held a tray of food and stood by the side.

I watched as my parents gave their blessings to Anna.

My parents laughed and chatted happily with her as they gave her a luxurious gift.

How hilarious was that?

I had not seen them smiling so genuinely at me for a very long time.

Anna walked over to me and hugged me affectionately.

“Nancy, I’m your elder sister from now on.

“You need to treat me like a real one, you know?”

There was a subtle provocation in her gentle expression.

My body stiffened. I gripped the plate tightly. No sound came from my throat.

Just then, someone teased us.

“Anna, which one are you? Nancy’s sister-in-law or her elder sister?

“Or should I say you’re Jonathan’s first wife while she’s the second?”

Jonathan’s expression instantly darkened.

“Quiet!

“Nancy, Anna is your elder sister. I know you’re not used to it yet, but you should, at least, show her some respect.”

If Jonathan insisted on loitering outside the school, so be it.There was a three-month gap between the training and the grading of the SATs.Brendon wrote to me daily. He told me Jonathan had come for him.He had offered a position for Brendon in the military. His only request was to hand me over to him.Brendon said Jonathan nearly went down on his knees.I asked Brendon if he was tempted to give up on me for the sake of a promising career. It was supposed to be a joke. But when I sent the letter, I inexplicably felt nervous.I wondered how Brendon would reply to me.Would he truly give up on me for the sake of his career? When I received his reply, I hesitated to open it.I was too afraid of getting a definitive answer. Why was I so nervous?I thought I had convinced myself that my relationship with Brendon was purely transactional.Maybe I had gradually fallen for him after being around him almost daily.I had to stop myself from letting these feelings grow.Brendon’

Commander Robinson had seen me working day and night for Jonathan. When Jonathan had a high fever, I took care of him for three days and three nights until I missed my promotion opportunity. In return, what had Jonathan done to me?He hooked up with Anna. Under the guise of taking care of his widowed sister-in-law, he gave her everything that was rightfully mine.People in the military had seen this more than once. They tried to advise him.Instead of changing it, it only intensified his feelings for Anna.As a result, he hid it from me as he took care of two households at the same time.Commander Robinson said, “It was partly my fault that you ended up like this. I wasn’t able to advise Jonathan in time. As a result, Anna won his heart. Nancy, I’ll ask you one last question.“Are you sure there’s really no chance between you and Jonathan?”Upon hearing Commander Robinson’s solemn tone, I nodded.I knew Jonathan would invoke Commander Robinson to pressure me. Hence, I kept my

Brendon was extremely furious. He had charged at that person and beat him up brutally. Both of them ended up at the clinic. But that person was in worse shape.I bought some iodine and dressed Brendon’s wound. When I saw him wince from pain, I could not help but laugh.“Now, you’re feeling the pain. I didn’t expect a gentleman like you to be this wild in a fight.”His face was bruised, but his imposing aura remained.“You married me. As husband and wife, we’re one. Who is he to badmouth you? I’ll make sure everyone knows you’re untouchable.”I chuckled.A warm feeling spread throughout my chest.Even though Jonathan was a respected commander, he never spoke up for me when people gossiped about my miscarriage. When he saw me upset at home, he only offered a passing remark, “People will talk. But if you’ve done nothing wrong, there’s no need to be fearful. Why bother with them?”He never once considered whether those words might actually hurt me.Perhaps marrying Brendon was r

“Come back with me. I’ve forgiven you. I’ll give you the military spouse quota too, okay?”Based on his words, he meant to reconcile with me. But his expression was akin to rebuking me for being unreasonable. When I remained silent, he rubbed his forehead.“Behave yourself. Just come home, okay? Your parents are worried about you.”I raised my hand and knocked the plate of dessert off the table. The sticky, sugary liquid spilled onto his neatly pressed shirt. His impatience flared across his face almost instantly.“Nancy!”I yanked off his hand and sneered, “Can’t stand it, huh? Then leave!“Jonathan, I’m serious about the divorce. I’ve no intention of reconciling with you. Since you pity Anna so much, spend your whole life with her, then!“Both of you are jerks and killed my child. You really are made for each other!”I stood up and walked away.Behind me came Jonathan’s furious roar.“What nonsense are you spouting?! Who killed your child? Nancy, you’ve clearly lost your

“I know you just got divorced. I’m not trying to take advantage of that. Just think of it as helping each other achieve our goals.”Brendon and I grew up together in the same neighborhood.I knew he had feelings for me a long time ago.Since he was so frank with me, I told him I would think about it.What he said made sense. We knew each other well. There was no chance of either of us deceiving the other. It would benefit me, and at the same time, it could solve his problem, too.But marriage was not something to be taken lightly. Once we registered, we would be bound together for the rest of our lives.I hesitated. One day, Jonathan showed up at the school. After class, a group of students crowded by the window and looked at the school entrance.“It’s an off-road vehicle! My mom said only military officers have the authority to ride in those. Is a commander coming to our school?”I followed their gaze.Jonathan’s subordinates surrounded him as he got out of the off-road v

Most of the people on the bus were colleagues posted here with me on assignment.I bumped into a familiar face. It was Brendon. We had not seen each other since college days.I did not expect to see him working as a teacher after he graduated from college.Brendon spotted me, too. He waved at me.“Nancy! What a coincidence. I didn’t expect to be going back with you.” I chuckled. “Yes. I thought you went back last year.”There were three quotas last year. But I had not competed back then.Brendon taught in a primary school. He was the only one there with a college degree.Logically speaking, he should have been able to go back last year.He scratched his head and said with a laugh, “Something came up last year and delayed me. Are you assigned to teach at St. Anderson School this time, too?”I nodded. They assigned most of the people on this bus to the same school. It was not surprising that Brendon and I ended up teaching in the same school. The school assigned me a pret
