Avery's POV

I had sent the man who genuinely cared for me away and walked directly into the trap of the man who sought to control and use me.

Every time Ethan’s hand rested on my arm while flashing his smile, I fought the urge to scream.

But the fear was too big. The realization that Ethan was the architect of an entire cover-up kept my lips sealed and my movements cautious.

If I expose him, I would be exposing myself as a fool who ran back to her abusive boyfriend. I would jeopardize the team, the tournament and everything I’d worked for.

Four days after Jax’s disappearance, the rink felt less like a sanctuary and more like a gilded cage. Every movement I made was under Ethan’s scrutiny and instruction.

“No, Avery, not that speed,” he called out from the boards during one of our training session. “Hold back slightly. You’re over-rotating that combination spin. We need flawless execution, not reckless power.”
