Chapter 3

Author: Lumi
She said she cared nothing for gold and silver, yet nothing but the finest incense would do.

She said she never courted the great houses, yet she was at their banquets constantly.

Her compassion, her kindness, all of it was hollow. She could not let go of fame, wealth, or power.

Lilith was stunned, but a moment later she recovered her usual composure. "Rowena, your magic was unstable when you were small, and you only ever got so much of the ration you needed to practice. But you would rather faint in the middle of practice than let that lame fox go hungry, and you fed her every bit of it. And now look at you."

That was not how it happened at all. "You were being generous with someone else's food. I was just the poor wretch who went hungry for three days because a wild fox stole my rations."

The year I turned eight, the servants could not be bothered to carry my daily ration up, and simply dumped it at the foot of the attic stairs.

A wild fox out of the hills stole it and ate it all, and when I fought her for it so I would not starve, she clawed me badly.

Lilith walked past and gave us one cool glance. "The poor lame thing only wants a mouthful of food. Surely you don't need to fight her for scraps she needs to live?"

She delivered the line like a saint and swept away.

But the servants took it to heart. They praised Lady Lilith's kind soul and fed my ration to the fox for three days running.

Lilith had long forgotten it. In her mind it was too small a thing to be worth remembering.

She frowned at me. "Don't tell me you actually want to marry Duke Edmund."

I did not answer that directly. "I just don't want all of House Seyler buried alongside your lofty principles."

An angry voice cut in from the doorway. "A lowborn bastard like you dares dream of taking your sister's place as duchess!"

Cordelia swept in as though the room belonged to her, and spared Mira and me a single contemptuous look.

Mira tried to get out of bed to curtsy, and Cordelia waved her off in disgust. "Don't trouble yourself, you sickly thing. If you stop breathing on my account, people will say I mistreated you."

Mira went stiff. Her hand stopped on the blanket, and she gave Cordelia a strained, placating smile.

Cordelia glared at me and let out a cold snort. "Don't imagine that because you made a scene today you will be marrying the Duke in your sister's place.

"A bastard is all you will ever be. Even what your sister rejects is still beyond your reach."

I looked at her calmly. "That is a strange thing to say, Mother. Lilith does not want it, and no one else is allowed to want it either?"

Cordelia's eyes cut into me. "You dare talk back? It's not that no one else is allowed. You simply aren't worthy!"

With that she took Lilith by the hand and turned to go. "Come home with me, Lilith. The palace has sent you an emerald tiara. Duke Edmund must have cooled down. He has agreed to your terms and means to marry you."

Something pleased flickered at the back of Lilith's eyes, but she let Cordelia pull her along with a put-upon look on her face. "Mother, you know I have never cared about jewels. There is no need to rush..."

I let out a long breath.

It seemed exhausting, living the way she did.

She wanted things, rejected them from on high, and then waited for someone to press them into her hands so she could accept them reluctantly.

What the palace had sent, and how the Duke felt about any of it, did not concern me.

As long as House Seyler was safe and Mira was well, that was enough.

The next day another party arrived from the palace.

It was Vance Holloway, the King's most trusted steward.

He brought two chests of jewels and fine cloth as gifts, along with a royal etiquette tutor.

My father and Cordelia went out to receive him personally. I never laid eyes on him.

Vance took a seat in the front hall, did not so much as touch his tea, and spoke with his chin lifted. "His Grace went to the King himself to ask for these gifts for the young lady of House Seyler. Have them sent up to her shortly, my lord."

My father, delighted, agreed at once, then asked carefully, "About yesterday... has the King held it against us?"

Vance gave him a sidelong look. "His Grace spoke at length on House Seyler's behalf before the King. You should count yourself fortunate to have raised such a fine daughter, my lord.

"Otherwise, defying a royal marriage decree is a crime that takes down an entire house."

  • My Sister Refused the Duke, Then Regretted My Marriage   Chapter 9

The day after the wedding, Edmund and I went to the palace to pay our respects to the King and Queen. When we came home, the servants who had been sent to the prayer room in the old town the day before were waiting at the door.I arranged flowers while I listened to their report."Lady Lilith threw a terrible fit yesterday. Lady Seyler rode out there through the night and swore she would find a way to bring her home."I picked out a flower that was nearly wilted and handed it to a maid. "Oh? Did she say how?"The servant answered, "She said she would come and beg you in person."I smiled. "My stepmother is far cleverer than Lilith."The next day a servant announced that Cordelia had come to visit. She wore a careful smile, but I could see the envy and hatred in her eyes.I pretended not to notice. After a few insincere pleasantries, Cordelia finally stated her purpose. "Your Grace. Rowena."I have come today to ask something of you."I set my glass down gently and did not answer.Corde

The wedding was lavish beyond measure, and the young women of the noble houses could not hide their envy."How did that Seyler bastard get so lucky? Even a bastard can make a duke lose his head, apparently."Some of them knew the truth of it."I heard her sister swore she would die before marrying him and nearly got the whole family killed. The second daughter came out and took it all on herself."A beat of silence followed, and then scoffing laughter erupted."Everyone says the elder one is so lofty. I think she is mad. She would drag her whole family into the grave for her own sake. How selfish!"People said all sorts of things, but the reputation Lilith had spent years building had finally taken a hit.Mira held my hand as far as the front hall. She could accompany me no farther. She waved goodbye with tears in her eyes. However unwillingly, Cordelia still had to stand with my father that day and see me off to my wedding. She hurried me along with a stiff face. "Get moving. There is

Beatrice had every one of the gifts carried up to my attic.Nothing was missing except the gown on Lilith's back.Beatrice took a box from the bottom of a chest and handed it to me. "Thank goodness I never handed over what His Grace entrusted to me. He asked specifically that you have this to build up your strength."It is a remedy made from rare enchanted mushrooms. Taking it will help you develop your magic."I opened the box. I had only ever seen mushrooms of that grade in my father's stores. They were genuinely precious.I curtsied to her in thanks. "Thank you, Madam Beckel."Another party arrived from the palace. They brought the new cloth Edmund had promised the day before, along with several finished gowns.Whether Edmund meant it or not, none of the gifts came in chests. Maids carried them in their arms, drawn up in two long rows, turning the delivery into a spectacle designed to honor me.There was one more thing, a book of prayers for Lilith."By order of the Queen, since Lad

Lilith was so shaken she could not stand, and leaned on a maid's shoulder. Her eyes were full of disbelief. The truth was laid out plainly in front of her, and still she could not take it in. Edmund had actually gone to the King and had the decree rewritten. He was going to marry Rowena!Cordelia went white. My father was worse. His legs gave out and he sank to his knees. "Your Grace, there has been some mistake."The servants did not make it clear that day, which is why we assumed the gifts were for Lilith."Edmund scoffed. "A mistake? I don't think so. That gown Lady Lilith is wearing looks very familiar. It looks a great deal like the cloth I picked out for Rowena myself."Lilith's expression darkened. Cordelia dropped to her knees at once to explain. "Your Grace, I took it upon myself. I was the one who assumed the gifts were for Lilith. She is an innocent girl. She knew nothing about it."Lilith stumbled, but she recovered quickly and slipped straight back into her usual serenity.

At Edmund's words, everyone exchanged baffled looks.Lilith was standing right there. Who else could the duchess be?Vance broke into a cold sweat, carefully unfolded the decree, verified the name, and answered, "Your Grace, the decree plainly names Rowena, the second daughter of House Seyler."When I arrived I told the servants to fetch Lady Rowena. I don't understand..."What Vance could not have known was that the servants had passed on my name exactly as given, while Cordelia had assumed the message was garbled and that the steward had asked for the eldest daughter, not the second.Vance had never seen me in his life, so of course he could not tell who had come out.The serene face Lilith always wore came apart. "What did you say? You are marrying Rowena?"My father hurried the servants along. "Go and bring Rowena. Now."Cordelia went even paler and turned on Vance in disbelief. "How can that be? Steward, surely you have misread it. The name on that decree should be my Lilith. It c

My father wiped the sweat from his brow and said nothing more.Cordelia smoothed it over with a smile. "The steward is quite right. Our girl is spoiled, I admit it, but His Grace is generous enough to give her another chance."Every soul in House Seyler is grateful."Vance snorted and waved the royal etiquette tutor forward. "This is Beatrice Beckel of the Queen's household, another favor His Grace requested personally. She has come to teach the young lady of House Seyler the manners of the court."Once Vance had gone, Cordelia excitedly ordered the servants to take the gifts and Beatrice to Lilith's rooms.Pleased as my father was, he hesitated. "The steward never actually said the gifts were for Lilith. What if..."Something in him kept insisting that the good daughter Vance had spoken of was not the girl who had defied a royal decree the day before.Cordelia glared at him. "If they are not for Lilith, who else would they be for? Rowena?"My lord, has the fright addled you? He is a d
