Chapter Twenty-Nine

Derrick and I glanced at each other in stunned silence as we tried to piece together what dad had just said. I had always wanted to go to Paris, but our parents never took us with them. Not even during the long extended summer break. I had asked several times if they would take me, but they never had. Now out of the blue, they want Derrick and me to move there halfway through our senior year of high school. What in the bloody hell is wrong with them? I don't care if they cut Derrick and me off; I'm not going anywhere.

Derrick looks as if he is about to blow. His eyes keep squinting and closing tightly, his skin is turning crimson, a vein is popping out of his temple as he grits his teeth, and his knuckles, on the one hand, he didn't smash into the wall the other night, have turned white.

Derrick got up, walked over to the fireplace, and started to build a new fire. As if he were trying to calm himself down somehow.
