Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Sugar Cookie
I was looking for a necklace when I got a call from Wright Manor. It was a necklace with a cross pendant that I'd worn up until my surgery. The chain was fairly thin and came undone quite easily.

When my stomach had been killing me, I'd clutched the necklace tightly in my hand. Once I woke up from surgery, I found that it was gone.

Calista said a nurse might have thrown it away by accident, and I believed her.

Owen said over the phone, "My mother wants to see you. Come home for dinner tonight."

I wanted to refuse, but Annette Tate, Calista's grandma, was the only person in the Wright family who had been genuinely kind toward me. She even had someone send me a replacement cross necklace after the surgery.

In the end, I went over.

When I showed up at Wright Manor, I saw Tyler in the living room. He was sitting beside Annette, pouring her a cup of tea. I spotted the cross necklace hanging from his neck, and my body instantly turned cold.

There was no way I would ever fail to recognize that pendant.

Tyler tracked my gaze and lifted the necklace, as if he'd only just remembered it.

"Does it look good on me, Joel?" he asked with a careful smile. "Calista gave it to me. She said she got it for me, hoping that it would keep me safe."

Calista, who'd just come over with a tray of snacks, stiffened slightly.

I marched right up to Tyler and said, "Take it off."

Tyler froze. "What?"

"I told you to take it off."

Tyler immediately looked hurt. "I had no idea it belonged to you, Joel."

Calista set the tray down and said, "Joel."

Looking at her, I asked, "Did you give it to him?"

She didn't answer, but the silence seemed to crush the last of my barely existent hope.

"I had that necklace with me right up until my surgery," I said.

Annette's expression changed at once, and even Owen looked stunned.

Brows creasing slightly, Calista said, "I didn't know that."

"You didn't know that, huh?" I kept my eyes fixed on her. "I left it on the bedside table before I was taken into surgery. When I woke up and found that it was gone, you told me the nurse must've tossed it by mistake."

Looking as if she finally remembered that detail, she stiffened a little. "I thought you'd be reminded of your surgery and feel bad if you saw it."

"So you gave it to him?"

Joel started tugging on the necklace. "Here. I'll give it back to you, Joel. I swear I had no idea!"

He moved so frantically that red marks appeared on his neck. Calista immediately grabbed his hands to stop him.

"Stop trying to take it off. You'll hurt yourself."

I watched as she held his hands in concern. That hurt me more than seeing the necklace around his neck.

"Tell him to return it to me."

Calista glanced at me and lowered her voice a little. "It's just a necklace, Joel."

"Just a necklace," I repeated with a laugh, my fists curling. "It's also just a surgery, right?"

Calista's expression changed once more, and Annette became so furious that she started coughing. "I can't believe you, Calista!"

Tyler called out tearfully, "Don't blame Calista, Joel. She only gave it to me because I've been having trouble sleeping lately. She just thought it'd help me feel safe."

It was for him to feel safe, huh?

I'd just come out of surgery, but the cross necklace I'd held onto for a sense of security and protection was handed over to Tyler so that he would feel safe instead.

I reached out to take the necklace off myself, but Calista grabbed my wrist. "That's enough!"

I looked at her. "You're stopping me?"

She said, "Tyler just got divorced. He doesn't need to suffer any more emotional distress right now."

I snorted. "So that's why the moment he even hints at feeling sad, you guys act like you're scared he's going to jump out a window? I just came out of surgery. I just found out my family sold me off to you.

"This whole time, every single one of you has taken me for a fool, and yet you all expect me to be thoughtful and understanding still. What did I ever do to deserve such treatment, Calista?"

She had no answer for that.

Suddenly, Tyler gave a violent tug, and the necklace broke. The cross pendant fell onto the floor, and I bent down to pick it up.

When my fingers touched the chipped pendant, my tears finally started to fall. I wasn't crying because of Calista. I was crying because I couldn't even hold on to a simple necklace.

Grabbing the pendant and the chain, I turned to leave.

Calista followed me out onto the driveway. "I'll take you home."

"Don't bother."

"You're in no state to be alone right now. It's not safe."

I turned back to look at her. "Calista, did you, for even a single second, fear that I would die on that operating table?"

When she said nothing, I nodded. "Got it."

…

That night, I didn't go back to the master bedroom. Instead, I stayed in the guest bedroom. I put my hospital wristband, the cross pendant, and the broken chain together in a box.

After wiping away my tears, I started packing. I had pitifully few belongings—just a few old clothes, several books, and a photo of my grandpa and me.

I didn't pack a single watch or cufflink Calista got me. Before leaving, I took off my wedding ring and placed it on the nightstand. The barely audible clink it made reminded me of the love I'd had for Calista for the past three years—so quiet and insignificant that it'd never mattered to her.

Before leaving, I went back to the Manning residence, but it wasn't to say my goodbyes. I was just picking up my copy of the marriage certificate that they'd kept here, ostensibly for safekeeping.

When Peter opened the door, the first thing he did was glance behind me.

"Calista didn't come with you?"

"I came by myself," I said.

Peter's expression instantly darkened. "What are you making a fuss about this time? A man shouldn't be so petty, Joel."

I walked right past him and headed for the study. "Give me the marriage certificate."

Gloria, sipping a cup of coffee, looked up. "Why do you want the marriage certificate?"

"I'm filing for divorce."

She slammed the cup down on the table. "Don't be ridiculous!"

Peter hastily closed the door. "Tyler just got a divorce! What if people think of our family if you get one as well?"

I looked at him. "So the Manning family's reputation matters more than my happiness and well-being?"

Peter frowned. "Don't make things sound so awful."

Gloria took out a document from a drawer and threw it at me. "Go on. Read this properly before you carry on with your temper tantrum."

A year later, Atelier J opened its second location. The new shop was at the end of a street with a rich history. A row of wind chimes hung above the entrance, tinkling whenever the breeze blew.On opening day, Nerissa was on her feet the whole time. Eventually, she had to lean against the counter to catch her breath. I handed her a glass of water."You've been a huge help, Ms. Landlady."She took the water while raising her brows. "Am I just your landlady?"I started going through the sales records. "And business partner.""Nothing else?"I pretended not to hear her. She laughed and didn't press me.By evening, the last customers had left. I saw Calista standing outside the shop. She stood beneath a streetlight, her wrist bare. The fitness watch was gone.Since I last saw her a year ago, she had lost a lot of weight. She looked much more reserved. The aloofness she once carried, the kind that seemed to put her above everyone else, was gone.Calista entered the shop, but she di

It was raining heavily on the day of our divorce hearing.Calista sat on the other side of the courtroom. She had lost a lot of weight and had prominent dark circles beneath her eyes. When the judge asked whether we both agreed to the divorce, I replied, "Yes."Calista turned toward me and stared for so long that the judge had to ask her again. Only then did she say quietly, "Yes."My heart didn't ache at those words. I felt only relief, like I was peeling off an uncomfortably itchy sweater. After leaving the courthouse, I found Nerissa waiting for me outside. She stood at the bottom of the steps with an umbrella in hand.Calista came after me. "Joel."Once I stopped in my tracks, she took out a ring box. Inside it were our wedding rings. The engraving on the inside of the bands read, "Calista and Joel, Always and Forever."When I first saw the inscription all those years ago, I stayed up all night, giddy with joy."Throw them away."Calista's fingers trembled. "They're our w

The next time Calista went to the Manning residence, she brought along her copy of the investment agreement from three years ago.For the past three years, she had always labeled the transaction as her way of helping the family out. However, from the moment I left with my suitcase, she finally saw the situation for what it truly was.She hadn't just lent the Mannings a hand. She'd used 30 million dollars and the marriage to me to preserve Tyler's dignity. When Gloria saw Calista come in, she shot to her feet and said, "Calista, you came at the right time. Joel has gotten too big for his britches. He doesn't even want his own family anymore. You mustn't indulge him. Ever since he was a kid, he's always been easy to convince if you appeal to his emotions anyway."Calista slapped the agreement down on the table, and Gloria's expression changed."What do you mean by this?""I was the one who signed this agreement back then," Calista said coldly. "I was the one who transferred the mon

Nerissa's property on the south side of the city was tucked away in a quiet alley. It was a quaint-looking house with brick walls, wooden doors, and a pomegranate tree out in the garden. Though a little dated, it was a cozy home in a peaceful setting. She placed the keys in my hand, saying, "The house is old, and the plumbing can get a little problematic sometimes. If you don't like it, you can still back out of the lease.""Do I get my deposit back?" I asked."No," she answered at once.Chuckling, I said, "Then I guess beggars can't be choosers."She laughed along with me."Alright then, Mr. CEO. I hereby wish you a pleasant stay at the shabbiest shack you've ever seen."The next day, I went to a wholesale market to get some leatherworking supplies. I'd taken a leatherworking course in the past. After I married Calista, she said leatherworking was exhausting and barely made any money, so I didn't pursue a career in it.Now that I was picking up the tools again, I felt a li

I walked out without looking back. Outside, a black SUV was waiting for me.Nerissa Dawson, who was leaning against the vehicle, spotted the suitcase I dragged out, but she didn't ask any questions. She simply opened the trunk."My property on the south side of the city is unoccupied right now. You can stay there for the time being.""I'll pay the regular rental rate," I said.Chuckling, Nerissa commented, "Despite falling on hard times, you're still very particular about these things, huh?"I shot her a look. "Was that the nicest remark you could come up with?""Of course not."She handed me a flask of hot tea, saying, "Have something warm. You look no better than a ghost right now."The car was exiting the neighborhood when Calista's call came in. When I rejected it, she called again. After the third call, I shut off my phone. For the first time, the city no longer felt like a cage.…Meanwhile, Calista stood in the empty bedroom. Half the closet was empty. The watches a

I looked down at the document. It was an investment agreement from three years ago, signed seven days before my wedding. It stated that Wright Group would invest 30 million dollars in Manning Corporation. The terms also clearly specified that as long as Calista and I remained married, Manning Corporation was entitled to continued financial support from Wright Group and would receive priority in business partnerships.Gloria's, Peter's, and Calista's signatures were all there on the last page.I thought back to the night before the wedding. Peter had picked out a tie for me, looking emotional as he said, "Joel, Calista is a good woman. Since she wants to marry you, it means she does care about you."Gloria had stood at the door, saying, "Once you marry Calista, make sure you make a good impression on the Wrights. With a family like theirs, you'll be set for life."At the time, I'd sobbed my heart out, thinking that my parents couldn't bear to part with me. But now it was clear to m
