Chapter 4

Autor: Year on Year
"All right," Mom said. She didn't push. "Focus on studying. Don't wear yourself out. After exams, I'll take you somewhere good to eat."

"Okay."

I ended the call and stood outside the cafeteria for a while, letting the sun warm my face.

Then I exhaled and headed back upstairs.

About fifteen minutes later, the classroom door opened.

Natalie walked in with Ryan and Noah behind her.

She went straight to the front of the room.

"Everybody wake up. I have something to talk about."

Students slowly lifted their heads from their desks.

Natalie stood beside the whiteboard.

"It's about lodging during the entrance exams. I spoke to Mr. Grant about what everyone was worried about."

She paused and looked around the room.

"He said the exam is ultimately our responsibility. As long as we arrive at the testing center on time, the school doesn't care where we stay. If we want hotels, we can arrange them ourselves."

The room immediately filled with excited murmurs.

Then Natalie let her expression turn troubled.

"But you all know the hotels near the testing center are expensive.

"The cheapest motels are around a hundred and twenty dollars a night, and they're not exactly great.

"Anything nicer is closer to two hundred. And even those are a few miles away."

Her gaze drifted toward me.

So did everyone else's.

I was leaning over my desk, chin resting on my arms, watching her without expression.

"Julia's family owns a hotel," Natalie said with a smile.

"The Hayes Grand is right beside the testing center. It's a five-minute walk.

"Everybody knows it's a five-star property. Rooms are usually more than three hundred dollars a night."

She paused.

The classroom went strangely quiet.

A flicker of embarrassment crossed her face, but the smile returned almost immediately.

"Here's what I was thinking."

Her voice softened.

"Nobody wants to be exhausted before the biggest exam of high school. If we can have better conditions, why wouldn't we?

"Julia's family is very well-off. There are only about fifty of us.

"Two nights shouldn't really be a big deal for them, right?"

"Exactly," Chloe jumped in.

She twisted around in her seat.

"Julia, your hotel is so close. Letting us stay for two nights doesn't cost your family anything. We're classmates. Help us out."

"Yeah," Ryan added. "You're always so generous. Help us one more time. You don't want somebody failing because they couldn't sleep, do you?"

Noah nodded.

"Think of it as doing something good. Everyone will remember it."

"Julia, you're the best. Just talk to your parents."

"If the rooms are empty anyway, why waste them?"

"We're not asking for nothing. We can promote the hotel."

"Yeah. We'll leave five-star reviews and post about it."

One voice followed another.

I listened.

Slowly, the corner of my mouth lifted.

I sat upright.

The classroom gradually fell silent.

Everyone waited for my answer.

Natalie stood at the front, head slightly tilted, that same gentle smile on her face.

I looked at her.

Then I finally spoke.

"Sorry.

"The hotel is sold out."

Over the next two days, the story exploded.More viral accounts reposted it.The headlines became more dramatic. Some claimed a luxury hotel had chosen profit over students' futures.Views passed a million. The comment sections turned vicious. Out of tens of thousands of comments, I couldn't find one in a hundred that wasn't attacking us.The city's hotel licensing office called Dad directly and told him, in a very serious voice, that they were opening an inquiry. The building department contacted him about a noise inspection. It felt exactly like my first life.Except this time, the guests who had actually stayed with us didn't remain silent. The Hayes Grand had been full of strangers during the exams - students and their parents. One student posted a long statement.I STAYED AT THE HAYES GRAND DURING THE ENTRANCE EXAMS. HERE'S WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.He wrote:"I came from out of town and booked the hotel a month ahead. I stayed two nights during the exams. I heard no c

In my last life, Natalie's post had looked almost exactly like this. She claimed she'd stayed at our hotel, been kept awake by construction, and performed badly the next day.At first, only a handful of people saw it.Then someone reposted it, larger accounts picked it up, and it went viral. This time, Natalie hadn't stayed at our hotel.Every room had been sold to strangers. She had stayed somewhere else.Yet the post still appeared.Different username, different claimed identity, same lie.I took a breath and opened the account. One post, no followers, no history.A brand-new throwaway account.I took screenshots and sent the link to Dad."Dad, someone's posting fake claims that the hotel had construction noise during the entrance exams."He picked up on the first ring."What? Give me a second, I'm opening it."I listened to him read."Julia, this is complete nonsense."There wasn't construction anywhere near us. The city suspended every major project around the tes

Dad opened his mouth to argue.Mom kicked him under the table."Enough, Greg. Julia said they don't need rooms."Dad winced and quietly returned to dinner.I looked at the two of them and felt my throat tighten.I hadn't protected them last time. This time, I would. The day before the entrance exams, I went back to school to pick up my admission ticket.Only a few students were there, squeezing in last-minute review.Natalie wasn't there.Neither was Chloe.Just a handful of quiet boys asleep on their desks.I took my ticket and headed for the door.Mr. Grant met me in the hallway."Julia, after the exam, don't obsess over answer keys. Go home and rest.""I know. Thank you.""And ignore the gossip. Focus on your own test."I nodded and left.Students played basketball outside. Others lay on the grass in the sun.Everything looked so normal that my first life could have been a nightmare. But it wasn't.I remembered every detail. On exam morning, Dad was awake at si

Three questions in a row. Each one sounded hurt.I looked at the face I'd known for three years.Pretty, gentle, thoughtful.Whenever I did badly on a test, Natalie was the first person to comfort me.Whenever I missed school sick, she copied the notes and brought them to my house.I had believed our friendship could last forever. This was the person who destroyed my family."Natalie."My voice stayed calm."I already answered you about the hotel."It's sold out."You asked. I answered. You decided not to believe me."What exactly am I supposed to do about that?"She went still."As for moving to the back, I wanted somewhere quiet to study."And lunch? I wanted to eat alone."Do I need your permission for either of those things?"Her face went pale."Julia, that's not what I meant. I just...""Just what?"I cut her off."You thought my family had money, so we should give fifty rooms to the class for free?"You thought because I'm your friend, I should solve every

That last comment landed hard. The room went silent.I sat in the back row, hearing every word.My fingers tightened around my pen until my knuckles turned white. Not good enough to stay at my hotel?I set down the pen, took a breath, then stood, picked up my backpack, and walked out.Whispers followed me.I didn't look back.At the front gate, I spotted Mr. Grant talking to the security guard. He saw me and waved."Julia. Come here a second."I walked over.Mr. Grant studied my face, adjusted his glasses, and hesitated."You doing okay?"I blinked, then nodded."I'm fine.""Don't listen to that nonsense."His voice was quiet but serious."Your family owning a hotel has nothing to do with your classmates."If you help them, that's generosity."If you don't, that's your right."Nobody is entitled to judge you for it."My nose suddenly burned.I lowered my head before he could see my expression."Thank you, Mr. Grant.""Go home. Study. Don't let them distract you
