The next morning, I woke up smiling. I was 18 and fully a woman now. Keegan had gone back to the couch after we cuddled for an hour. Oh my god! I had sex with Keegan last night. He rubbed my back afterwards and kept asking me if I was alright. He was so caring during and after. I truly just loved this man with all my heart. I did not regret sharing that moment with him. However, I wasn’t one hundred percent sure that it was his first time as well and I didn’t dare ask him. I went to the bathroom so that I could take a shower. I had to get this smell off of me. I was too nervous to shower last night. I feared our moms had heard us and I was afraid what they would do or say if I had gotten up to shower at one o’clock in the morning. I cleaned myself as best I could with sanitary wipes and made due. My only regret is that we weren’t safe. My mom had given me a ton of talks about the safety of premarital sex, but I chose to ignore it.

I felt all kinds of feelings. I was confused, in pain, happy, scared, but mostly in love. I knew now more than ever that Keegan was the one for me. I couldn’t wait to see him. At breakfast and when we opened gifts for Christmas, I planned to sit with him.

When I got out of the shower, I could hear my dad’s voice bellowing from downstairs. His laughter filled the air with joy and hope. I always looked forward to my dad coming over. I got dressed after my shower and ran downstairs.

The living room on Christmas morning was a scene of warmth, joy, and festive chaos. Soft golden light filtered through the curtains, illuminating the twinkling lights of our decorated Christmas tree. Its branches were adorned with shimmering ornaments, delicate glass baubles, and strands of tinsel that caught the light. Beneath the tree, a sea of colorful wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons surrounded unopened presents, some stacked neatly and others slewn about.

The air was filled with the scent of pine needles, cinnamon, and a hint of hot cocoa. Stockings hung from the mantel, now slightly sagging from their overnight treasures my mom and Ms. Kyren stuffed them with. A cozy fire crackled in the fireplace, casting a flickering glow on the room’s soft furniture. There were plush couches and chairs draped with warm, Christmas blankets and decorative pillows embroidered with holiday motifs.

Laughter and chatter filled the space as our family, still in their pajamas and fuzzy socks, gathered around. The twins were laughing and playing on the VR, while mom and Alison sipped warm drinks together at the kitchen table. A classic holiday movie was playing softly in the background.

Everything looked so perfect. I searched the room for Keegan, and then I saw him. He was standing by the tree, sorting presents into piles with Baylen. His blue and white pajamas complemented his eyes just so. His hair was still pulled back from the previous night. He caught me looking at him and smiled.

“Where is Quinn?” I asked.

”She is coming. She stayed at her grandma’s house last night, since dad and Alison pissed her off,” Baylen teased.

”I wouldn’t say she is pissed, just a little embarrassed,” Alison said.

”Why would she be embarrassed?” Ms. Kyren asked.

”Cause dad and Alison wouldn’t let her stay here because they think we can’t keep our hands off of each other for a night,” Baylen said, never looking up from the presents.

“That’s not true Bay,” my dad said, shooting him a look.

”Dad you guys literally said, you two can’t be…” Baylen started.

Dad briskly cut him off, “That’s enough Baylen Henry.”

Keegan whipped his head around to look at me. No one had even suspected that we would be the one’s actually having sex. I don’t think we even thought that would happen. But I am so happy that it did. My love for Keegan grew exponentially last night.

“Baylen that’s quite enough,” my mom interjected as well.

I walked over to where Keegan was at. I smiled at him, expecting the same greeting in return. However, he was very stoic to me.

“Squirt, can you stand over there, so that you aren’t in the way?” he asked.

Squirt? How the hell were we back to that nickname. After what we did last night; he was still giving me childhood nicknames?

I brushed it off and told myself he was just really busy and that must have slipped. Presents were being handed out, but Keegan never touched mine. He kept skipping over my pile. Again I chalked it up to him being busy and distracted. However when it came time for him to open the gift that I got him, I knew he would be back to the Keegan he was last night. Loving, compassionate and caring when it came to me. He opened it and held it up to the light. He smiled warmly at me. There’s my guy.

“This is such a dope hoodie! I love it!” He said, ruffling my hair.

I felt much better. I’m not sure why I even doubted him. He pulled the hoodie over his pajama shirt. I knew the LSU hoodie would get him. He loves me and I love him. Things were going to be different now, but we could handle it. As others opened their gifts I went and sat by Keegan on the floor.

“Hey!” I said, smiling with all of my teeth.

My excitement for seeing him this morning was so different. Our connection felt different… because it was.

“Hey Squirt!” he said, glancing over at Baylen.

There it was again. Why does he keep calling me that?

“Umm, is everything okay Kee?” I asked.

“For sure. I’m a bit overstimulated from having so many people here, but I’m okay. I promise,” he said, giving a forced smile.

“B, did you decide who you are taking to the game Sunday?” my dad said, interrupting our conversation.

“I did. I thought since Keegan is home and it’s also his favorite team, maybe he would like to come along as my friend,” I said proudly.

Everyone turned to look at Keegan, who looked like a deer caught in headlights. I touched his arm and gave him a reassuring head nod. He stammered for a bit, searching for words.

“I, uh, I mean, I don’t know. Maybe you should ask Jeff or Jagger first? I think I’m having dinner with Isadora’s exchange parents,” he said.

What in the world was happening? Ask Jeff or Jagger? Two people I have been seeing romantically for months? I didn’t know what to say, as I saw everyone’s attention shift to me.

The morning came in brutally. I rolled over begrudgingly and stopped my alarm. My head was hurting and my mind was racing. I had stayed up all night thinking about Keegan. His game was televised last night and I mindlessly watched. Seeing him actually enter the game in the 4th quarter was breathtaking. Keegan was a freshman so he didn’t get a lot of playing time. But on this day he did. I held my breath every time he was near the ball. Recalling the time from Homecoming when he had been knocked on conscious. My heart went back to that time. When he had seen me in my dress. The way his eyes had went over my body and face. Soaking in every inch. The way he gulped when I came closer. That made me smile. No Brees. Stop it. You aren’t his anymore. Today, I was going to the petting zoo with my softball team. They were doing team bonding. There were mazes, games, food and more at the petting zoo. She thought about the fun she would have with Harper and Quinn. She

Meanwhile, at LSU, Keegan sat on the edge of his dorm bed staring at his phone. Brees was still blocked from nothing on his end. She had blocked him. He had tried once. He’d stared at the message he’d typed for nearly twenty minutes before finally deleting it. I miss you. Too simple. I’m sorry. Not enough. I didn’t mean it. A lie. Because he had meant what he’d said in that moment. He had been scared. Scared of their families. Scared of what happened next. Scared of how serious everything had become. But he’d never been scared of Brees. That was the part he couldn’t explain. He could face thousands of people in a stadium. He could handle the pressure of LSU. He could handle everything his future demanded from him. But the thought of admitting how much he loved his best friend’s little sister terrified him. And now he’d lost her. He wanted to drive home and scoop her up in his arms and let her know that his love for her had not changed and that they needed to be

Brees thought blocking Keegan would make it easier. It didn’t.It just made everything quieter. His name no longer appeared on her phone. No late-night texts. No random pictures from his day.No stupid videos he knew would make her laugh when she was trying not to.No You awake? at midnight.Nothing.And somehow, nothing hurt worse than everything. She had stared at his contact for almost ten minutes before finally pressing Block Contact. Her thumb had hovered over the button.Once.Twice.Three times. Then she had done it.Because she couldn’t keep being the girl who waited for Keegan to decide what they were.Especially after what happened in front of their mothers. After her mom found out they’d been sleeping together, Keegan had promised her.“It won’t happen again.”Brees had wanted him to promise they would be safe. Not that it would never happen again. She had wanted that promise to mean he was choosing her.Instead, when their mothers asked what was happening between them, Kee

“Wow, okay. Yeah, we are focusing on our sports and I’m getting more serious about Jagger since she is moving here next semester,” I said. His head whipped around so quickly. He looked confused. After our moms excused themselves, he moved closer to me on the couch. “Brees, what did you mean about you and Jagger?” he asked. “Well you said we weren’t together, so I assumed that meant what you said this morning about being in love with me was complete bull crap. What was that Kee?” I asked. At this point I was holding tears inside so hard that I thought my heart might explode. He grabbed my hand and didn’t let me pull away. “I felt like that was the right thing to say for now. Your mom seemed upset that we have been having sex. I didn’t want to give her anything else to worry about. I’m really sorry I said that. You know I absolutely love you with all my heart Squirt,” he said, bumping my chin. I shook my head. “No Keegan, I don’t know that. You have had a weird way of

I looked at her with my mouth agape. Was she seriously having this conversation with Keegan in the next room? RAP! RAP! A knock on the door saved the day. Keegan poked his head inside and Ms. Kyren was right behind him. “You guys all good in here?” he asked. I nodded and tried to push him out of the room, but my mom made him sit down on the couch instead. “Join us for a moment you two. I was just discussing the protocol of safe sex with Brees,” my mom blurted. How embarrassing. She really didn’t need to do this right here just because Casey slipped up. Keegan fidgeted a bit and looked at his mom for reassurance. You could see how uncomfortable he was. “Oh they are safe Missy. I told Keegan they needed protection every time they were together and he promised me that they would,” Ms. Kyren said. My mom’s face turned a deep shade of red. I don’t think she was ready to hear that I had already been sleeping with Keegan. She turned to me specifically. Her eyes narrowing in on mi

We made our way to my mom’s house. When we arrived I saw Casey’s car in the driveway. I was happy that she came. I had invited her, but she had been missing in action all day. She got out of her car when she saw me and she ran to me. It looked like she had been crying. I reached out and hugged her tightly. “What’s wrong my Casey girl? Did Cyman do something?” I asked. She nodded her head aggressively. Keegan looked at me and smiled and excused himself after giving Casey a warm hug. He went into the house so that we could talk. “So remember during the back to school party you saw Cyman and I… well we were sleeping together up until Thanksgiving Break,” Casey said wiping tears on her jean jacket. “Okay. I knew this information Case. What’s the deal?” I badgered. I will admit, I was a little perplexed that she was even bringing up his name when she knows I can’t stand him after how he treated her. “James… I’m pregnant,” Casey sputtered out. I almost dropped my phone. Did she ju
