LEAH POV

I stand at the counter with my phone pressed to my ear, gripping the edges so hard my knuckles turn white.

“Hello? This is Leah,I missed a call from this number so I'm returning it.” My voice comes out higher than I want it to.

I clear my throat as if that could change anything.

A pause.

Then I hear her typing "Leah. Right. We were calling about the position. The interview you had last week." She continues in a cold tone

My stomach tightens. "Yes. I've been waiting to hear—"

LEAH POV The room goes quiet except for the sound of a couple arguing about something on the TV that I barely hear over my heart beating.I knew this was coming but I didn't think it was this soon we were very careful. Or so I thought.I pull my hand and reach for the glass of water on the table. I take a sip…anything to buy time as I figure out what to tell her.I can't tell her.I look at her, Emily Cross, my best friend, the kind of friend anyone would wish for.The girl who held my hand asking me not to cry when Victor showed up drunk for my fifteenth birthday. She had once shown up at my door with groceries when Mom's paycheck came late. Let me sleep on her bed for a week when the mold got so bad in our bathroom I couldn't stop coughing. She's been here through everything, every bad thing, every hard thing. And here I am sitting beside her, this close to telling her that I want her father.I can't tell her, I couldn't afford to lose her… if I do she'll never forgive me. And she'

I've been waiting to hear—""We've decided to move forward with other candidates." The words don't make sense, and I feel chills like I've been doused in cold water."I'm sorry?""Other candidates," she repeats. I feel the irritation in her voice. "We appreciate your time. Good luck with your search. We hope you find something."The line goes dead.I stand there staring at the phone screen that says call ended like the words will change if I look long enough Other candidates?I grip the counter so hard it hurts, my chest tightens a

  • Owned By My Best Friend's Father   Chapter Fifty-two

LEAH POVI stand there for a moment after Ethan's car disappears, coffee pot in hand, watching the empty street. The morning sun is hot, baking the sidewalk, making the air shimmer over the asphalt. Then I head to table four, where an older gentleman in a faded guayabera, reading a newspaper folded to the sports section, sits.He doesn't look up at me when I set the cup down, just grunts as he slides me a five. I leave his change on the table and move to the next. The counter is filling up as lunch rush gets closer, and a family of three takes the booth by the window. Two delivery guys in neon vests slide into the corner already arguing about something, probably a football match, their voices carry across the diner, words mixing until I can't tell who's winning.I'm wiping down the counter when Mira calls me over."Leah. Come here."She's standing by the register with a girl I've never seen before, she looks my age…Nineteen maybe. Her dark hair is pulled back, and not a single strand

DAMIEN POV The air shifts.I stare at her, she still has that easy warm smile on her face but her eyes..her eyes are cold."Is that a threat?"I ask restraining the anger building up in me.She laughs "I'm just saying. You have enemies, Damien. A lot of them. And when they find out there's someone you care about..." She shrugs. "Well. You know how these things go."I do know.I know because I've lived it.The memory hits before I can stop it. I remember it like it happened yesterday; the call at 3:00 a.m., Marcus's tight voice telling me to get to the hospital. The way the fluorescent lights hummed in the hallway. The way the doctor wouldn't meet my eyes. The way Emily's mother looked at the table, so still, so quiet, like she was sleeping. She took a shot meant for me she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The wrong man to love.I buried her on a Tuesday. Emily was four wearing a white dress and didn't understand why Mommy wouldn't wake up and give her kisses.I swore after t

DAMIEN POVI retreat to the kitchen, pacing back and forth, my hands clenched at my sides.. I hear the front door close. Her footsteps on the porch. Then nothing. She's gone.I run to the window, through the glass. I see her walking down the street; her hair is still wet from the shower, and for some reason, she didn't dry it. Her arms are wrapped around her, like she's trying to hold herself together.Every muscle in my body wants to go after her, to grab her, pull her back, and make her stay. To show her how much I needed her. How much she means to me.I don't move.Emily is upstairs and she has been quiet since Leah rejected her help. Too quiet. If I chase Leah down the street, what would Emily think? What does she already think? And Leah came down dressed for work and wouldn't look at me, wouldn't meet my eyes. She needs space. Or she needs never to see me again. I don't know which. I can't tell anymore.I stand at the window until she disappears around the corner. Then I just sta

LEAH POV I stand up, balling the wet paper in my fist "I'm fine. I just—" I looked at the floor, I still couldn't meet his eyes. The matcha is gone now, mostly, just a faint green stain on the wood. "I'm sorry about the coffee, it was a mistake. I didn't mean to…"He waves a hand. "Don't worry about it.""I will worry about it. It was twelve dollars each plus you drove all the way here to make sure I got it and I just…..""Leah." He takes a step closer. "It's coffee. I'm not worried about the coffee as long as you are good then I'm fine."I don't know what to say to that.He looks at me for a long moment. Then his eyes drop to my bag on the couch, then back to me. "You need a ride? To the diner?""No. I'll take the bus." I say hastily "You sure?" he raises a brow at me "I'm sure," I say nodding He doesn't push, nods at me "Okay. I'll see you later, then."He turns and walks to the door, then he paused and turns back to me "Leah.""Yeah?" I answer "You look like you could use s
