Chapter Six: Apple Sauce
“Angelica!” Astra rushed to the sitting area to find Angelica-covered apple pieces in a panic. “What happened?”
“I think I may have squeezed instead of rolled,” Angelica said as she wiped apple bits and juice from her cheek. “I got frustrated and did that clinch thing I do when I’m frustrated.” She said as she held her hands up. “I tried to roll it, but it wasn’t working; it just keeps shaking.”
“What did I say about feeling?” Astra said as she signed in relief.
“My emotions control the power,” Angelica said as she got up from the floor. “I am going to go shower.”
“Try not to get apple chunks in the tub.” Astra could not help but giggle at poor Angelica.
“Stop laughing.” Angelica called out as if they were eight again, and one of them made a mess.
“Stop being a spazzy weirdo.” Astra said back in a sarcastic tone.
“When you stop being a sarcastic twit.” Angelica fired back as she entered the bathroom.
***********
Angelica entered the map room with her hair up in a towel. Astra stared at her map in frustration, the tickle still scratching. The map was a perfect hologram with mountains, hills, and trees. Except it wasn’t a hologram, it was magic.
“This is amazing,” Angelica said in awe. “Where did you get it?”
“It belonged to my master, the one who trained me in the art of magic.” Astra said as she tapped her chin. “They gifted it to me when my training was complete. The mirror is a piece of the table.”
“Well, why can't you just use the mirror to find my dad.” Angelica asked, trying to be helpful.
“It's not that simple; I can’t just plug the mirror into the table and ask it where the bloody tomb is.” Astra answered, a little irritated.
“I mean, have you tried that before? You say the mirror is part of the table; why wouldn’t it have a place to plug in?” Angelica questioned with a shrug of her shoulders.
“Wait, you might be right.” Astra snapped her fingers with a pop; the mirror was in her hand. She held the mirror over the table. The table's edge morphed to reveal a slot for the hand mirror. “Why did I not think of this before?”
“You do this thing when you think too hard. You block the information from yourself. I usually have to point it out for you. Just like calculus, you do it every time.” Angelica said with a knowing look.
“Calculus was not part of my formal education till this century, thank you very much.” Astra rolled her eyes at her sister. “Okay, let try it out. “Show me where is Aleister?”
The table lit up as the map morphed to a new landscape and location. The forest was thick and expansive except on area. In the deepest part of the forest was a small clearing with the mausoleum.
“I can't believe that worked?” Astra stared dumbstruck. “Five hundred years, and I did not know they could do that. You think my master would have shared that information.”
“Maybe your master didn't even know?” Angelica mussed as she examined the table's edge at some nobs that looked like carvings. “I wonder what these do?” She asked as she pressed one without thinking. She was teleported to the clearing as she lifted her finger off the nob. “Astra!!!”
“Angelica, where did you go?” Astra searched for Angelica; she could hear, not see her.
Angelica looked to the sky to see the ceiling of the cottage. She walked up to the mausoleum and lifted her hand, expecting to feel the cold stone. Instead of meeting cold stone, her hand simply passed through the hologram. The mausoleum looked as if the moon shined on its white marble.
“I think I am in the map; I am by the mausoleum!” Angelica called from her spot on the map. Astra found her quickly.
“How the hell did you get down there?” Astra's eyes widen in surprise.
“I pushed on the first nob, and I think I may have been teleported onto the map.” Angelica called out, not sure if Astra could hear her. “How do I get out of here!?”
“If I am reading these symbols right,” Astra said as she examined the nobs before pushing one. “This one should bring you back.” Angelica blinked and was normal-size next to Astra.
“Once all of this is over, we are playing D&D on this thing!” Angelica said in excitement.
“Angie, this is an ancient piece of magic; we will do no such thing.” Astra said in shock.
“Come on; you have to admit this would bring the game to a whole new level. We could use an actual dungeon or castle for a campaign.” Angelica said as she did her happy nerd dance.
“Okay, I admit it would be cool, but we need to know more about the table first. Who knows what might happen if we go in half-cocked.”
“How do we do that? Did it come with an owner's manual?” Angelica asked as she looked over the forest.
“Unfortunately, no, it did not.” Astra said as she touched her hand to the mirror.
“So what do we do know?” Angelica asked as she looked over the mausoleum.
“Well, we know where he is. We need to make sure he isn’t guarded.” Astra stated as she wrote down the quadrants.
“I have a question; what does that writing on the mausoleum say?” Angelica asked, not quite sure what the language was.
“I need a closer look; I am going down on the map. Can you stay close by to let me out when I call?” Astra said, not waiting for an answer before pushing the nob.
********
Astra stared at the words trying to remember their origin. This language was ancient and no longer a part of history. It felt familiar to Astra, like a lost memory in a dream. Her hand traced the words trying to remember their meaning. Then it clicked in a brain like a light switch.
“Angelica, I am ready to push the second nob!”
“I know it is here; where are you?” Astra stood in her library searching for a particular book. She searched the shelves till she saw it. “There you are.” “I found it!” Astra called as she read the pages. “Ok, so there is a problem.” Astra wasn’t sure how to explain this to a newbie. “Alister’s mausoleum has a blood seal on it.” “Meaning…” “Only a relative of the caster can open the seal,” Astra said as she snapped the book shut and placed it back on the shelf. “That complicates things. Is there a way to figure out who placed the seal?” Angelica asked, trying to come up with a solution. “My contacts might know who placed it. They should be arriving after sunset.” Astra said as she pinched the bridge of her nose. “Say they do know who placed the seal; how do we find one of their relatives?” Angelica asked, not sure how that would be possible. “I haven’t thought that far yet. Go practice till they get here.” Astra
“Why do you have his blood?” Astra asked as she looked at the little vile. “It's for protection,” Adric answered, taking off the necklace. “We can free Aleister now,” Astra said with a grin. “But first, we need a plan.” “Damn right, we need a plan; we can just run in there half-cocked.” Devon said as he and Angelica entered the room. “Were you listening?” Astra asked, a little irritated. “We had our first werewolf lesson,” Angelica said with a sheepish smile. “You can't have a private conversation with werewolves.” Devon said with an arched eyebrow. “Well, shall we come up with a plan?” Astra said as they gathered around. “Adric, do you know if Aleister is guarded?” Astra asked as she played with the map. “Not that I am away. Aleister hasn’t been a concern for nearly two decades.” Adric said as he ran a hand through his dirty blond hair. “Just in case we need to be on guard. With Shayla be
The group exited the portal at the north side of the forest. The cloudless sky shined bright with stars. Astra and Angelica stayed in between the boys as a line of defense. The forest creatures scattered as they moved through the trees. The mausoleum shined in the moonlight as they approached. “What do we do when we get the thing open?” Devon asked, looking to Astra. “Adric will set up the I.V. to feed Aleister.” Astra answered Devon. “He will most likely be in a coma state till he has enough blood.” Adric said as a noise came from the south, and before anyone could speak, a man tackled Devon. “Devon!” Angelica cried as a girl with raven hair appeared in front of her. “Hey there, Ginger, you look scared.” She taunted Angelica before lunging to attack her. Angelina had her sword in hand, ready to defend herself. The tip of the blade pierces the raven-haired girl's chest, causing her to stop her attack. “You little bitch….” She muttered
Aleister looked to Angelica with love and relief in his eyes. “Thank the Gods you are alive.” He almost sounded like he was about to cry. “Where is your mother?” He looked around at the faces surrounding him.“Her family has her, unfortunately; But we are going to get her back.” Astra answered his question.“Is she okay?” He asked panicked. “If they hurt her, I will tear them apart.”“She is fine; last I checked, they want her alive till they get Angelica.” Astra answered, trying to calm him down.“Why wait to rescue her?” Aleister questioned as he climbed out of the Coffin.“One Angelica is not ready to fight; she is our best chance to survive a horde of werewolves. Two, we had to save you first. You have been in here for too long as it is.” Astra said as she counted on her fingers the reasons Shayla was still in the clutches of her family
Angelica The wolf stared at me with knowing eyes as I sat there frozen. When I moved, she moved, and I realized she was me and wouldn’t hurt me. “Devon said I should name you, but I think you already have one. What is your name?” I asked her as I tilted my head. ‘You may call Regin.” She spoke telepathically. I was brought back when I was six years old with a stuffed dog I called Regin. “I named you years ago; I just didn’t know it at the time.” I laughed as I remembered how I dragged that thing everywhere. I was heartbroken when mom left it behind in her panicked dashes to a new home. I understand her rush now, but I was so mad when she left it. It seems so silly now. I miss my mom. ‘I have always been with you.’ Regin said as she blinked. “Why do you come out when I sleep?” I asked, needing to be answered. ‘I was trapped for nearly two decades. I need to run free.’ Regin said as she laid down. ‘When you sleep, the barrier falls, and I can run free.’ “What if we have schedule
Astra needed to move fast and quickly for her mission to succeed. She opened a time-lapse portal to the blood bank and moved quickly. “I can do this….” Astra said to herself as she ran through the portal. She emerged in the storeroom. Blood was hanging in the chilled room behind glass cabinets. She looked up to check for any cameras filming her and found none. “Who leaves blood with no surveillance?”“Well, that isn’t a problem when you have magic.” She said to no one in particular, seeing as she was alone. She planed her index finger on the hole to unlock it with a zap. The cabinet doors released as she lifted her finger from the keyhole. She took blood bags from each section to make it look like none were missing. “Okay, that should be enough for a week or two.” She said as she counted the twenty blood bags as she put them in her backpack. Once the cabinet was locked, she made her leave through the portal.
*DAYS BEFORE*“Astra, she’s gone!” Shayla screamed as she ran downstairs.“What are you talking about?” Astra asked, confused.“She ran off with someone named Jack.”“Give me that.” Astra took the letter and balled it up and rolled it in her hand. Sparks began to fly as she pulled her hands apart. “Shit!”Shayla and Astra read the letter in shock. “I told you to tell her!” Astra said as she threw her hands in the air as if to say, ‘I told you so.’Shayla started to cry from frustration. “I didn’t think she was not ready to know. Her world would change, and she would never forgive me.”“Her world is already changing; she is not a baby anymore, Shy.” Astra said as she threw on her bag. “Now I have to go after her before he hurts her. Stay safe till I get back.”“Just make sure she is safe.&rdqu
ShaylaThe day passed, trapped in the room; she was sealed in by magic she could not break. She tried everything she could think of to break the seal; nothing worked. Her stomach began to make noises as she became aware of her hunger. The door's lock clicked before the door opened; a maid pushed a cart into the room."The Master has sent you some super, miss." She said as she removed the lid to the tray. "Beef stew with potatoes, and I have some soda." Before Shayla could say anything, the maid walked out of the room. The food called to her hungry stomach; she lost the battle of wills and ate the food. It didn't taste weird, so no poison or potions. She stared at the door, thinking of a way to get the door open without burning her hand. The shifter silver would burn her hand through any fabric she used. Her magic would not work; the seal on the room would prevent her from using her magic. The door would need to be opened from the other side. But how was she supp
