CHAPTER 1: Lyra's POV

“Drink up, everyone! Tonight, we toast to three years of absolute peace under our Alphas!”

A loud cheer echoed through the massive courtyard as Beta Thomas raised his wooden mug high. The annual Alpha Gathering was finally here, and the air was thick with the scent of roasted meat, heavy smoke, and the sharp, pine-and-earth aromas of hundreds of visiting wolves. Massive bonfires roared against the dark night sky, throwing orange light across the faces of allied Alphas, warriors, and elders who had traveled from all over the territory to renew their pacts.

I stood just half a step behind the identical, towering shoulders of Ryker and Renn. My chest swelled with a familiar, quiet pride. For three long years, this had been my place. I was the one who managed their chaotic household, the one who organized these massive events, and the one who stood by them when the pack council doubted their young leadership. I loved them with every single piece of my soul, fully believing the Moon Goddess had hand-picked me to balance their fierce, twin fire.

Ryker turned his head slightly, his sharp jaw catching the firelight. “You did well with the preparations, Lyra. The northern packs are already impressed.”

“They haven't even tasted the main feast yet,” I said, offering him a warm smile.

Renn glanced back too, his expression usually softer than his brother's. “We know how hard you worked on this. Thank you, sweetheart.”

“I do it for our pack,” I replied softly, my heart fluttering just like it did on the day our bond first snapped into place. “And for both of you.”

Suddenly, the heavy wooden gates at the edge of the courtyard groaned open.

The loud chatter in the clearing died down in an instant. The steady thumping of the ceremonial drums faltered, then stopped completely. The warriors at the front perimeter parted ways, their bodies tensing as a small, shivering figure shuffled through the entrance.

My smile faded. My blood ran cold.

It was Liora.

She looked painfully thin, her shoulders hunched inward as if she were trying to hide from the world. Her clothes were frayed, and her pale face looked utterly broken—the kind of fragile, deep-seated ruin that immediately made a whole crowd feel protective. She took three shaky steps forward, looked directly at the center stage where we stood, and let out a soft, choked sob that cut right through the quiet night.

“Ryker... Renn...” Liora whispered, her voice trembling so perfectly that every wolf in the clearing leaned in to hear her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to disrupt the gathering, but I couldn't hide in the shadows anymore.”

Ryker froze beside me, his entire body going stiff as stone. “Liora?”

Renn made a low, strangled sound in his throat, taking a half-step forward before catching himself. “You’re alive.”

“Barely,” Liora wept, pressing a thin hand against her chest. She sank to her knees right there on the dirt, right in front of the visiting dignitaries. “I have carried this shame for three years. I left because I thought it was the only way to save my life, but I cannot let her live a lie anymore.”

She pointed a shaking, pale finger directly at me.

I blinked, completely stunned. “Liora? What are you talking about? You left the territory on your own.”

“Because you forced me to!” Liora shrieked, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she looked up at the gathering of Alphas. “She planned all of it! Three years ago, Lyra found the private letters Ryker and Renn wrote to me. She intercepted them. She twisted their words, intercepted my replies, and made the twins believe I had betrayed them with a rogue wolf!”

A collective, shocking gasp rippled through the hundreds of wolves watching the stage.

“That is a complete lie!” I shouted, my voice cracking as I stepped out from behind the twins. “I never saw any letters! I didn't even know you were writing to them back then!”

“You threatened to poison my food if I didn't run away!” Liora cried harder, her small frame shaking violently as she pressed her face into her hands. “She told me the twins would kill themselves if I stayed. She wanted my place. She manipulated the pack records, she manipulated the bond, and she stole everything that belonged to me!”

I looked around the massive courtyard, my breath catching in my throat. I opened my mouth to defend myself again, to scream my innocence to the people I had served for years, but the words trapped themselves in my throat.

No one was looking at me.

Not the warriors I had healed in the infirmary. Not the women I had worked alongside just this morning. Every single eye in the crowd was fixed on Liora’s weeping form. They were leaning toward her pain like moths drawn straight toward a dangerous fire, their expressions darkening with immediate, aggressive judgment.

“This is a very serious accusation,” a heavy, booming voice resonated from the front row of the council seating.

Elder Aldric stood up from his carved wooden chair. He walked slowly toward Liora, his long ceremonial robes dragging against the dirt. He stopped right beside her, his face grim, and placed a heavy, comforting hand on her trembling shoulder. He looked up, his gaze sweeping over the visiting Alphas and then locking onto me with a cold, unforgiving hardness.

“As the senior voice of this council, I cannot remain silent,” Aldric announced, his voice carrying the immense weight of his decades on the council. “I have personally watched Liora suffer in exile since she left our territory. I found her living in squalor, broken and terrified. Her account tonight matches the exact inconsistencies I found in our pack records three years ago—records that Lyra had direct, unmonitored access to.”

My heart stopped beating. The ground under my feet felt like it was actively shifting, tilting into a dark, endless void. “Elder Aldric, please, you know me. You know I would never do this!”

“The evidence speaks for itself, Lyra,” Aldric said coldly, his words sealing my fate in front of the entire alliance. Around the courtyard, every visiting Alpha nodded their heads in slow, silent agreement. The murmurs of disgust started, rising up like a wave of heat.

Panic clutched at my chest. I turned around frantically, grabbing the rough fabric of Ryker’s sleeve. “Ryker, please. Look at me. You know me! Tell them she's lying. Say something, anything!”

Ryker’s jaw was clamped so tight the muscles in his face jumped. He stared straight ahead at Liora, his blue eyes hard, blank, and completely closed off to me. His mouth stayed firmly shut. He didn't say a word.

My hands began to shake as I let go of him. I turned to his brother, my eyes wide with silent, desperate begging. “Renn. Please. You have to believe me.”

Renn finally looked down at me. For one agonizing second, his hazel eyes softened, flickering with a sudden hesitation, as if he wanted to reach out, open his mouth, and speak up for the woman who had shared his bed for three years.

Then Renn looked away too.
