Chapter 12

Mathew

“Goodness! I've been calling you nonstop but you didn't pick up.” I shrieked as soon as Megan picked up her phone.

However, my heart sank into my stomach and I froze when I heard a different voice from the other end.

“Who are you? What happened to Megan? Why do you have her phone?” I could feel my heart pounding hard in my chest as I said in a single breath, my grip around my phone tightening.

“She is drunk. You should come pick her up.” A masculine voice spoke from the other end.

“Give me the address of the place. Now!” I snapped, and he told me the address. I didn't spend another second before dashing out of the balcony, leaving for the parking lot afterwards.

I dialled Megan's number as I walked briskly to my car, but unfortunately it ended without anyone picking up, so I just had to rush there.

“Mathew?” I heard Rose's voice behind me just as I pulled the car door open, causing me to pause. That bitch! Why the fuck is she calling me now? Isn't she the reason Megan is in this condition?

Don't blame me for jumping into conclusion, but I was sure she was the reason. After she told me about their fight.

I managed to put on a smile as I turned back to face her. She had already walked up to me by then. As always, she looked dumb and clueless.

“Where are you hurrying to?” She locked eyes with me.

“I got a call from work. My office was raided by some thieves.” I told her the first lie that came to my mind.

Her expression remained the same, and I almost thought she didn't believe me, until she suddenly gasped.

“Oh, my God! You should call the police.” She gasped, covering her mouth

“I will call the police when I get there…” I paused, then placed a hand on her shoulder and forced a smile as I said. “I might not be able to come back home tonight, honey. You should lock the door before going to bed.” And without waiting for her to say anything, I hopped inside my car and drove off. I didn't have much time to waste.

I arrived at the bar in exactly fifteen minutes, and headed straight inside. Megan was lying on a long bench in front of the bar, wasted.

“What the fuck!” I cursed, rushing to squat beside her worriedly. How could they leave her out here knowing how dangerous it is for her?

“Megan dear… are you alright?” I tapped her cheek gently, but she only sucked her lips and scratched her hair before returning back to sleep.

“Geez!”

I gathered her in my arms and took her to my car, driving to her apartment afterwards.

It was already past 10pm by the time we arrived at her apartment, so I helped her out of her dress and tucked her into bed before hitting the shower.

A smile curled up my lips as I was welcomed by Megan's beautiful sleeping face.

“She is gorgeous.” I muttered.

My attention was stolen by my phone that had just chimed, and I rolled my eyes, knowing who the text would be from. Rose was the only one who would call to me to be sure that I was safe.

“That witch!” I huffed, going over to the bed to pick up my phone. However, my expectation and ego was bruised when I saw that it was just a regular phone notification, and not a text from her.

My heart stung with anger.

Now that I thought of it, I noticed that there was something that had changed about Rose.

‘It's nothing, Mathew. You arr just overthinking things’

I dismissed the thought as I tossed my phone away before going to join Meg on the bed.

It was already morning by the time I woke up. My heart skipped when I opened my eyes and didn't find Megan sleeping next to me.

“Where is she?”

I got out of bed to go look for her as I called out to her.

Relief coursed through me when I arrived in the kitchen and found her standing beside the counter, holding her forehead.

“Megan… are you alright?” I walked over to hold her, thinking she must be having a hangover.

“Don't touch me!” She snapped, pushing me away and facing me, her eyes blazing with anger.

“What the heck are you doing in my house, sleeping next to me?!” Her voice dropped with anger and disgust as she glared hard at me.

I batted my eyelashes as that came as a shock to me.

What the heck is happening? Is she mistaking me for someone else?

“Are you still having a hangover? It's me, Mathew.” I told her, maybe she really wasn't fine yet.

“I am not blind, Mathew. What the fuck are you doing in my house!” She slammed her hands against the counter, her voice louder than it previously was.

Now, this is some serious shit!

I mean if she won't do a good job, how sure am I that you, her sister will?” “Your worries are valid, Mr. James, but I assure you that you won't regret this…”“Martinez realty is one of the successful and most influential realty companies in the country. I wanted the divorce to go through as soon as possible, but I guess it won't be anytime soon.My phone chimed with a text as I got ready to leave for the office, and I hesitantly picked it up. However, a smile crept up my face when I saw who had texted me. It was Bruce.‘Upscale restaurant. 2pm’.It was the address of the restaurant we were to meet.My eyebrows squinted as I tried to remember the place. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a seafood restaurant built on a riverbank.“Bruce is weird…” I chuckled to myself.“Why this restaurant of all places?” ‘See you later’.I replied to his text and shoved my phone inside my white handbag before going to stand in front of the mirror to check o
