Jake pushed past the crowd of reporters and onlookers to his car. Collapsing into the driver's seat, he locked the car but didn't drive off immediately. His head buried into the steering wheel, as his hands wrapped around it. “Why are you doing this Ray…” he muttered, his voice strained by the weight in his chest. His wet cheeks pressed on the steering wheel, and his lips quivered. A notification popped up on his phone from his tracker… he sniffled, reaching for it. Jake stared at the lit-up screen for a minute before moving his hands over his face to wipe the tears there. “I know what I must do” his Volkswagen engine roared to a fiery start. As his car came to a halt at a Hallmark location in Valley Field Tech Ltd. Jake's legs suddenly became too heavy to walk into a company that once felt like home, his eyes rested lazily on the 4 story edifice standing before him. With a neon sign, boldly engraved with "Elite Valley Tech Ltd.” A vivid image of him and Ray in their Old studio apartment office setup, flashed. He groaned, hating the bitter taste of the pain in his heart. Most of the staff looked like they had been struck by lightning when they saw Jake walk in. “He looks depressed,” someone whispered. “That's what you get when you cheat on someone like Ray” someone else replied. Jake clenched his fist by his side, his steps hastened. “Ignorant fools” he cursed, stretching the length of his strides. “Ray we have to talk…now” Jake almost knocked down the door as he barged in. Ray's secretary came running after, clutching onto the door frame as she panted. “I tried to stop him sir” “Can we continue this meeting somewhere else, I will text you the address” Ray spoke directly to the man seated with him, ignoring the two unwanted guests. The man, a client, dressed in a brown tailored suit, nodded. And stood, Ray stood alongside and shook his hands. He made to leave but stopped right next to Jake, a wicked smirk flashed on his face and disappeared almost immediately. He continued out. Ray sat back as soon as the client left. “Shut the door behind you Lucy” his voice turned cold. Lucy the secretary scrambled out of the office, leaving the couple. “Who was that?” Jake motioned to the door. “A prospective client” Ray responded, his voice still cold, as he scanned the papers on his table. Jake, lost it, he strode to the table, letting his hand bang on it. “For weeks I have texted, called, and repeated the same thing over and over again” Ray raised his eyes to meet Jake's; swollen from the dark circles around them. His face softened, and he blinked slowly. “You cheated Jake” he paused, “I can never forgive that and that's why the divorce must go on” Jake hurried around the table to Ray,” I swear, I didn't do anything with him, he was a new friend and he wanted me to help him with something, I asked him to come over to the house, I slept off, no, he put something in my drink or food, he didn't touch me I swear” he rushed through the words like they burnt the tips of his tongue. Ray shook his head, shifted his face from Jake, “You are not even making sense” Jake’s voice dropped “Believe me, please” he clasped his hands together. “How can I ?” Ray chuckled drily. “Babe please” Jake pleaded. His phone rang. Jake ignored. “Answer it and put it on speaker” Ray ordered. Jake shook his head, sniffling. “Now” he thundered. Jake obeyed. “Hey baby, when are you coming home?” the voice from the other end of the phone asked.Jake's POV.“What the actual fuck, Enzo, you dated Ray?”Jake stood across his cousin with a crimson face and boiling blood rushing through his veins.“It was a long time ago,” Enzo blurted out dismissively and made for the closet.“You didn't think to tell me?”Enzo paused and turned to the other side of the room. Then sank into the leather couch in the corner and pulled out a wrap of weed from his pocket, smudging it as he reached for the lighter on the table.“He was supposed to tell you.” he clutched his chest and made an overly dramatic gasp. “he didn't?”Jake ground his teeth hard. “I'm not playing here, Enzo. I feel hurt and betrayed.”Enzo's brow knotted, “betrayed.”“Yes, you have been playing both sides.”Enzo rolled his eyes. “Don't be dramatic; besides, you shouldn't be angry at just me. Ray is responsible too.”Jake stomped his foot on the floor. “Start talking”.Enzo raised his hands into the air. “ok, fine, we dated 8 years ago. He was in the hood then, and…” he shrugge
Ray's POV.“Boss, Jake followed some bike guy out of the airport,” the guard Ray sent to trail Jake reported.Ray leaned lazily on his fist, spreading himself on the center couch in the sitting room.“I didn't follow because it seemed planned; he followed the bikers after a quick phone conversation with someone”.Ray's brow arched.“But he doesn't have any phone on him.”“He used the biker's burner phone.”Ray nodded, “he's chosen his path.” A sting of pain excruciated from Ray's chest; the thought of Jake being away suddenly felt unsettling.Like he lost something he had just gotten. But he consoled himself by believing that Jake was probably still in town and wasn't collaborating with Ricky. He waved his hands dismissively, and the soldier walked away.Reaching for the burner phone on the table, he dialed a number from his oregular phone.“Hello,” Ray's voice echoed in the phone.“Who’s this?” Ricky's voice rang back.Ray chuckled drily, “For someone who's been on my tail, I'm disa
Henry's POV.“Guess what?” Frank ran into the room holding a cell phone.“What?” Henry replied drily, his eyes buried in the lit-up screen of his laptop.“Just this morning I have gotten 6 calls from small brands willing to come on board” Frank clicked his tongue.Henry looked above his laptop to meet eyes with Frank, “Don't play with me now”Frank walked around the office to where Henry sat and scrolled the cellphone in his hand.“We are back in business baby” he exclaimed and hugged Henry.Henry stayed for a split second and shook Frank off when the thought of Ray suddenly coming in flashed in his head.Luckily Frank nudged it off with all the excitement he had bubbling inside.“We finally have work to do, I'll go back to my desk right away,” Frank blew him a kiss and made his way out of the room. With his door shut and Frank on the other side of the door, Henry threw a fist into the air as he exclaimed.“Ray would be so proud of me right now”He pushed some stacks of paper on the f
Jake POV“How long till we're there?” Jake asked clutching onto the motorbiker's leather jacket and his breath. The guy was insanely above the speed limit, but nobody else seemed to care, except Jake and his bike helmet.“Soon” the driver muttered. In 45 minutes Jake was standing in what felt like a lair.Only this time the lair was filled with men weighing, testing, and packaging drugs.Jake's stomach twisted as the stench of weed and cocaine wafted into his nostrils.“Hello brother,” Enzo called out as he walked into the room.Jake let out a forced grin as Enzo launched him into an embrace.“Welcome,” Enzo exclaimed.Jake's brow knotted. Something didn't feel right “Enzo, what about Matt”Enzo pulled away from the embrace and turned back in the direction he came.Jake followed.“He didn't make it,” Enzo responded finally, clutching the glass of whiskey he had just poured himself from a half-empty bottle in a room Jake later found out was his.Jake's fingers ran through his hair.Enz
