Chapter Fifteen

THE SILVER WOLF

Ahhhh!

I heard another scream from the eastern wall, then another one echoed from the courtyard. Suddenly, the fortress bell began to ring, it was loud enough to make the walls shake and I began trembling.

“Attack!” I yelled as a warrior ran through the corridor with blood dripping from his forehead.

“My Alpha”, the warrior bowed and I turned towards him quickly, like I had been patiently waiting for what he wanted to say.

Without even listening to him, I interrupted “how many are they?”

“They’re very many”, the warrior struggled to gasp.

The warmth on my face disappeared instantly and my face dropped, “seal all the fortress walls and gate” I instructed with a fierce tone.

“Yes, my Alpha” the warrior bowed and turned to leave, but I held his wrist back “protect the women and children first”.

“Yes, my Alpha” he nodded and ran away. 

Lyra’s heart pounded violently against her ribs, and she turned towards me “Is it the royal army?” 

I didn’t respond to her immediately, then my eyes slowly landed on Seraphina who stood several steps away.

“I thought you said they’ll come before sunrise? So why did they arrive here now?” I asked coldly.

She lowered her gaze, “I just told you what I know. Besides that, I wasn’t the one that brought them here”.

I walked towards her and stopped right in front of her “at least you knew that they were coming”.

Seraphina opened her mouth several times but no word slipped out, and for the first time since she walked into Blackthorne fortress, fear gripped her.

Boom!

A loud explosion shook the fortress and Lyra stumbled backwards, but I caught her around the waist immediately.

“You’ll stand behind me” I spoke in a calm voice while my hands were still tight on her waist.

There was another explosion, this time it was so loud that the walls trembled and dust fell from the ceiling.

I turned towards my commander sharply, “take everyone to the inner chambers”.

Karl nodded, “what about the eastern wall?”

“Don’t worry about that, I’ll handle it”, I responded immediately.

Karl stared at me for a few seconds with his mouth wide open, “my Alpha, the soldiers are up to a thousand”.

My expression became more fierce “and I’ll kill all of them”, I released my grip on Lyra’s waist then I walked towards the door.

“Don’t go”, Lyra held my hands back and I stopped to look at her for a few minutes before I insisted “no, I have to”.

My gaze shifted to her fingers wrapped around my wrist, and the anger in me disappeared.

“What if you don’t come back? Have you thought about that too?” Lyra mumbled.

I lowered my head to reflect on what she just said and something strange shifted in me immediately.

“I’ll come back”, I muttered calmly.

Lyra stared at me for a few minutes, before she muttered shakily “you can’t really tell”.

He walked closer to me and touched my cheek with his large hands “I can promise you that I’ll be back”.

Tears gathered around her eyes and I wiped them with my thumb, “don’t worry no one will touch you while I’m still alive”.

Lyra opened her mouth to utter a word, but before a sound could slip out, another thunderous explosion shook the fortress and I turned towards Karl “lock the doors immediately”.

I walked away and disappeared through the corridor. Suddenly, Lyra felt a strange tightness that lasted for a minute in her chest, meanwhile the thought of him being hurt lingered on her mind.

Suddenly, Seraphina walked up to Lyra to whisper into her ear and she flinched, while pushing her away with her elbow before she turned to look at her.

“Do you really think he loves you?” She faked a smile.

The whole courtyard fell completely silent and Lyra looked at her for a few minutes before she answered her.

“He doesn’t love me”, Lyra answered calmly and she let out a dry laugh.

“That’s true because he doesn’t love anyone”, she walked closer to me with her arms folded across her chest.

My brows suddenly pulled together “what do you mean?”

She chuckled softly, then she turned towards the door and Magnus walked away from “Magnus Blackthorne is a monster”.

Lyra clenched her fist tightly at her sides “why are you here if he’s a monster?”

“Because I know something that you don’t know”, Seraphina’s smile faltered and she snapped.

She cleared her throat and took a few steps closer to her “Magnus isn’t protecting you because you’re his wife”, she started pointing out. 

My heart began beating fast and my breath became unsteady. “Why then is he protecting me?” I snapped lividly.

Seraphina continued, “because he knows that you’re the silver wolf”.

Lyra’s breath hitched for a second before a chill ran through her body, and she shivered for a few seconds.

Just then, Lyra began reminiscing on the incident that happened with the wounded warrior in the battlefield, the silver light, the voice of one of those attackers that said she’s the silver wolf, and she lowered her head to look at how her hands were trembling.  

“I don’t understand you”, Lyra whispered shakily”.

“You don’t have to”, Seraphina responded immediately as she stretched her hands towards her, but she shifted away quickly.

“No, don’t touch me”, Lyra grimaced.

Seraphina chortles softly “you’re still pretending like you’re weak?”

Lyra’s heart pounded heavily “what did you do to me?”

Seraphina’s expression cracked and she whispered “I didn’t do it alone”.

“What!” Lyra gasped.
