Chapter 1
March 10, 2020It has been a while since I think of something remarkable. Maybe it is just me who has been thinking of “Where can I go after this?” “What should I do after this?” “Can I really do this?” I always doubted myself back then when I was in college. I even tried to skip an exam, an important one. But yes, I think I made it. “Alice! We are going to be late!” my mom said while I was fixing my hair, putting lipstick on, and trying to step out of my room. I still cannot believe that this is happening. It is like I am living in my dream. However, I am too early for this. I have a lot of things to do, and I have a lot of things in my mind as well. How possible is that? My classmates always tell me that I have good critical thinking skills. Even my professor used to say that when we met in the hallway. “How can you know that?” is the question I can hear more than a thousand times when doing our case studies and activities. I guess it is because I trust my instincts more than I t

Chapter 2
It is February 12, 2022, and I can feel the rush of the wind through my window. I woke up from my alarm enough to realize that this would be the fresh start of my life. After freshening up and putting on the best attire I could wear for this day, I came down to our kitchen to grab something I could have for breakfast—just a cup of coffee and brown bread prepared by mom. As I am driving, I can see the things that have built the City of Carson. Most of the houses here have had significant renovations with a more modern style. I am not sure of the people. I think that Carson has been full of questions and clues. Maybe we are all searching for answers. Finally, I have just arrived at my destination and my workplace. “Good day, Ma’am. How can I help you?” the security guard asked me as I entered the place. “Good day, Sir. I am looking for Chief Rylan West. I have a scheduled appointment with him.” I responded. “Ms. Alice Monroe.” An unfamiliar voice interferes from my back. “I

Chapter 3
A phone call around 3 AM just disrupted my sleep. An unknown caller just called. I had five seconds before I answered it; I was half awake. “Hello?” with my sleepy and confused voice as I try to know who calls in that late hour. Nobody answers, but all I can hear is a snoring bear or some creature or animal that people do not usually have interactions with. I keep saying “Hello? Who are you?” but there is no answer. The call was dropped after one minute of listening to a sleeping animal. As much as I wanted to think about it, I had to go back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, I checked the clock, past seven. I have to hurry because I have to go to work. I have no time to prepare myself, and I will just change my clothes and go straight to the Verano Police Department. While I am driving, it is getting darker and darker. My view is somewhat blurry, and I am not sure if it is because of the windshield of my car. I immediately get out of my car and figure out what is wrong. But

Chapter 4
The next day I received a phone call from Chief Rylan telling me to meet him in his office as soon as I arrived in the Verano Police Department. Before leaving the house, my mom approached me with a toasted bread bag and my lunch meal. "Alice, here are your meals for breakfast and lunch. I do not have many errands earlier. That is why I prepared these for you." I think no food could satisfy me as much as my mom did. Even though I am away and have had little chance to eat with her, her lunchboxes always make me feel that I am home. "Also, please take this. Look, I know you do not fully believe in Him, but please take this as guidance from me. Take this for me." She added. I became agnostic when I realized how many lives had been taken because of the cruelty in this world. I keep on doubting the creator above us, but as long as I am here in this world, I still have hope in myself and for all. Before leaving the house, I took the small booklet my mom gave me and put it in my bag. "G

Chapter 5
Making a step forward will make you know the future; stepping backward will bring you back to the past. That is the quote I made in my mind when I was young. I enjoyed watching documentaries and seeing people reach their goals for every puzzle they fixed. But as I grow, there will always be a missing piece in me. But I never bothered to ask, and I tried not to. The night I saw what was inside the package sent to me. I felt numb like I could not even move a finger. I even sweat despite the mild and cozy temperature in my room. But after that strange moment, my mom arrived home from the market. "Alice! I'm home!" she excitedly shouts as she enters the house. I prepared myself before letting her know that I was home already and before I went downstairs."Hello, mom! I will go down in a bit." I responded."So, how was your day? Have you also seen the package sent to you?" she asked."Uhm, I had a good day, mom. I had a meal with my colleagues, and they were all nice. The environment

Chapter 6
"Mom! I am leaving!"   "Alice! Do not forget your sandwich I made for you. It is on the table!" She yells from her room while getting ready to run an errand.   "Yes, mom! Thank you, and I love you!" And that is how I start each day with my mom. It is wonderful, and it feels like I am just living a normal life. Well, I call my life normal because I have achieved my dreams and will not help those who are in danger. But when things went ferocious and problematic, that is when it became difficult for us to consider living a normal life.   My mom packed my breakfast and my healthy lunch for me not to collapse again. I am sure that she is sick worried about me. If she could go to my department and be there to watch me, she could. But even I am saying those things, I still think about what happened to me when I collapsed in my office. It feels new to me, given that I have not done so much work yet to make me tired. Am I thinking of something else? Or are some thoughts trying to get insid

Chapter 7
When we arrived at Tony District, the police cars were around the location parking there, and some of the officers were outside. Chief Rylan leads the way, and next to him is Detective Eric. The place's ambiance is quite unusual and cold; it feels like the people who live there do not know or interact with one another.   The victim's house is good for two to three people, and the entrance is not entirely fixed enough to secure the people living in the house. But what we are handling is a murder case. What is the motive of the suspect? Detective Alex and Detective Sayer stepped inside the house and checked the surroundings. Before I followed them, a man approached the house entrance while shedding tears. "Grandma! Grandma! Where is my grandma? Is she there? Grandma!" he kept shouting those words while trying to get inside. "Let him in. He is the grandson of the victim." Chief Rylan muttered to the officers. Putting someone in an unwanted position is not just uncomfortable but total

Chapter 8
For the first couple of days before handling the murder case, I told Detective Alex about I actually felt when I had a hallucination in my office. I told him that I kept hearing other voices other than them calling my name and telling me to wake up. But I did not say to him that things became strange before that happened. I did not even mention the package I just received to anyone I know. It might remain a short mystery from that day and forward; it leaves a big question to me. It was April 25, 2022, when a 70-year-old woman got murdered in her own house. It still leaves a question to us who is the person behind that brutal and inhumane act to an older adult who seems to live a normal life. What does the suspect want? Those questions run in my head as I take a sip of my coffee in a coffee shop near the Verano Police Department. I am not there to relax or to take a break. I am just there to think and refresh my mind after trying to unveil the answers to all the questions I am havin

Chapter 9
Does he know who killed his grandmother? How?   This world is full of unsettling truths, but these are only for people who cannot handle them. Believe what you saw and nothing from what you heard. That mindset has been causing doubt to anyone who uses all their senses to come up with the truth.   "You know who killed your grandmother?" Detective Sayer asked as he leaned more on the table and faced upfront to Mr. Allen.   "You know, when someone says something like that, it is hard to believe it, but you still have to pay attention to what comes after those words." Detective Alex tells me while we are watching from the observation room. I guess they have heard a lot of misleading information from their past witnesses. Detective Alex waggles his hands at me, and I did not know that I was not fully listening to my environment. "You okay? I think someone's calling on your phone."   I stepped out from the observation room and answered the call, "Hello, mom?" as I spoke, I saw Chief Ry

Chapter 10
Applying some marks to the investigation could help us to go further, but sometimes, things will be more puzzling in our eyes until we realize that there is a missing piece from the very beginning. Everyone must be tired, including me, of course. We have been pulling an all-nighter the past few days. Other officers barely go home to find every possible thing we could use.   April 28, 2022   Today, we will be conducting a cross-examination of Ms. Wildes, the victim's caretaker. Detective Alex brought all the objects we found to the forensic office to get the fingerprints from all we collected. Other officers continuously check all the footage from the CCTV cameras along the streets in Tony District, where the victim lived. Everyone is doing their tasks delicately thoroughly.   While reviewing the profile of the caretaker, I went out of the department to get some air. While walking, I bumped into Mrs. Wildes. She was gazing differently with her cup of coffee. I can tell that she is
