MAEVE'S POV

I had run out of Caden's room like my life depended on it after he went all crazy trying to force me into his bed.

I went to Nyla and told her about the incident and she tore Caden to filth with her words. Then she asked me if I'd be interested in working in the kitchen and that the pay was 15 moon coins.

That amount wasn't that big but would help me survive my forever trip. I told her about how I may be asked to work for free without payment because everybody expected the traitor's daughter to slave away as penance. Then she brought up the idea about the getup—Tying my red hair under a black scarf and covering up my face with the lie that I had a nasty scar that I was afraid of showing.

And it worked, they handed me a tray to serve at a room on the better side of the pack guest house, probably to the Alpha of Firstfell as their pack is one of the most trusted to the crown.

If only I knew how wrong I was as I heard Caden's question. I tried my best to blend in, to not be noticed, but trust my lifetime predator to recognize its prey.

I came up with an easy lie, still flustered by the man I stared down who I tried my best to ignore but Lyra kept wanting to get close.

He was beautifully handsome, immediately I entered I was floored. Hardly any men kept their hair at this length and he had the air that he didn't care.

He smelled like the butterscones I dreamed about while lying on Pippa with an empty stomach due to it being too late to have a meal.

"Kitchen duties, I had a bad sneeze and Miss Berta wouldn't let me go uncovered."

"They dare bring a sick slave to serve the prince?" He snapped.

I didn't want this to escalate because I'd be caught in my own web of lies. But before I could say anything the man who had let me in gestured for me to leave and I heaved a sigh of relief.

I made my way out, putting whatever transpired between me and the stranger who I just got to know was Prince Riven behind me.

******

I got home and met the house empty, evening was drawing near and the ceremony would begin. I quickly brought out the small sack I hid under Pippa. My small belongings secured within it, I removed the cash I just earned and added it to the stash left in the bag.

Everything was ready, all I needed to do was just wear the dress Nyla had forced me to prepare and attend the damn ceremony before making my way out.

I was only showing up to make sure enough people witnessed me in attendance so if I slip out it wouldn't be a cause for alarm and would be taken as fatigue.

I dressed quickly in the dark green dress. It was a bit much for me but Nyla had called it, "Wicked." It was a straight dress with no pleating like the expensive ones, this way no unnecessary materials were wasted. It was just straight but the cleavage was showy. I wouldn't say I had big melons but I was well rounded and this dress showed it. Even though it was loose, my curves and ass couldn't help but show.

I groaned wanting to take this off but I had no other options and to be honest I might as well use this opportunity to dress up once. So I made an effort and made my hair in a half up half down style, decorating it with the hairpiece I made with shiny stones I found along the river bank. Then I put two strands loose in front of my face as I stared at myself in the cracked mirror above the washbasin.

I looked good, I might have looked better if my mum was here.

I shook off the thoughts and applied the red rouge Nyla had stolen from Gretchen's room saying she wouldn't notice and anyway it served her right.

Feeling satisfied, I slipped out with the small bag, hoping to keep it above the sycamore tree near our pack's border.

****

I had just finished securing the bag among the thick branches and was already making my way back toward the ceremony ground when I heard quick shuffling behind me in the growing darkness.

And before I could act, my face was covered by a sack and I was hit with a brute force that made me pass out.

I woke up to find out I was tied to a lush bed. My legs and hands stretched out on the four bed posts. I tried to drag my hands and my legs but the rope bit painfully into my skin. I realized I couldn't shout for help as my mouth had been gagged with a cloth.

The room was dark so I couldn't tell where I was but I had a very bad feeling. The air smelled of expensive oils and something else that made me breathe in deeply.

Who would do this to me?

Before I couldn't think about it more, I heard someone rushing into the room followed by rushed hushed whispers and door clicks.

Then a low growl that sounded extremely menacing. I struggled to get away, whatever was coming wasn't going to be easy to fight off especially when I had been bound like an offering.

Then I saw it.

A silver glow approaching, I couldn't scream as it grew near. One moment the monster was before me, the other moment I felt it beside me. My eyes widened in horror as I saw what I couldn't describe. This wasn't a wolf, it was something different. Red veins like vines down its eyes and fangs that weren't wolf-like, they were shorter and sharper.

But then everything changed as it peered at me then removed the gag from my mouth while his hand gently stroked my cheek. I found my body reaching toward it. My mind was screaming to back away but my body craved it.

I closed my eyes as I scented the same smell that had come from the prince earlier. When I realized who this was my eyes flew open.

"P-Prince Riven?" I stuttered, now seeing him a bit more clearly in the dim light filtering through heavy curtains.

RIVEN'S POVI changed out of my guardian attire into the formal Academy uniform as I made my way toward the observation balcony that overlooked the main hall where the candidates would gather. Just as I rounded the corner near the grand staircase, I nearly collided with someone in matching Academy robes."Viela?" I stopped, taking in how she looked in the robes. She looked too small in the oversized fabric, and the colors washed her out. "What are you doing here? And why are you dressed like that?"A small blush made its way up her neck as she replied defensively, "Your mother found a way to get me a position here. I'll be teaching Valerian history to the candidates."I stared at her and said bluntly, "Viela, you're not well enough for this. The Academy environment is demanding, and with your heart condition—""I'm not doing anything strenuous," she interrupted sharply, her already straight spine straightening even more. She hated being considered weak and helpless. "The history instr

MAEVE'S POVWe had just made it to the meeting point when I noticed Kaida and Gretchen were nowhere to be found."They must be on their way," I said, looking for a place to sit and wait for them."Think the others successfully got them?" Nyla asked, settling down on one of the moss-covered stones to catch her breath."They better have. We didn't go through all that just to assemble an incomplete key. And I trust them both—Kaida and Gretchen wouldn't come back here empty-handed." I tried to keep my voice light, but the truth was I was worried. The sound of footsteps crushing the ground made us look up to find Kaida and Dalia coming through, looking like they dug their way out of a pit. Kaida's hair was tangled with leaves and dirt, and Dalia had scratches all over her arms."What the hell happened to you guys? Also, please tell me you got it," I called out as they approached.Kaida held up a silver key piece, grinning. "Got it. Though we had to outsmart some very annoying Pokers to get

  • Selected By The Half-Blood Prince   24. S'then River

GRETCHEN'S POV The S'then River looked peaceful from where they both stood, but Kai and Gretchen knew better than to trust its appearance. The Gerins in it were ready to drown you in there for just daring to breathe wrong in their direction. "Okay, so this should be easy. Now all we have to do is offer it up to them, right?" I asked Kai. "Yes, but still we have to be careful even though we have what they want," he replied, fidgeting with his shirt. "Careful? I had to listen to my dad talk my ear off to get this. It better be worth it," I said back. As he was about to say something to me, two Gerins had emerged from the water. They had blue-green skin which glistened in the sunlight. They were beautiful in an otherworldly way, with flowing hair that seemed to move like water even in the still air, and eyes like deep pools that reflected everything and revealed nothing. "The pearl is acceptable," the taller one had said, her voice calm. "But the bargain requires the seeker to ret

KAIDA'S POVI felt like an ass. Here I was, yelling at her for being impulsive, when really she was just trying to prove she wasn't worthless."You're not useless," I said quietly."Yes, I am. You just said—" She tried arguing back while the tears still poured out silently. "I said you were impulsive. There's a difference." I scooted closer to her in the dirt. "Look, I'm not good at this whole... emotional support thing. But you're not stupid, Dalia. Naive, maybe. Sheltered. But not stupid."She sniffled. "That's not exactly a glowing endorsement.""I'm not done. You want to know what I see when I look at you? I see someone who's been protected her whole life but still chose to come to this deadly academy. I see someone brave enough to jump into a pit for a piece of metal, even if it was a terrible idea. I see someone who cares enough about her cousin to team up with people she barely knows.""Really?""Really. You just need to learn to think before you act. Channel that bravery into

  • Selected By The Half-Blood Prince   22. The Cunning Forest I

KAIDA'S POV "This is too easy," I muttered, staring at the Dyrium key piece sitting innocently in the middle of the forest. Just laying there on a bed of grass, gleaming in all its silver glory. No guards, no obvious traps, no magical barriers. Just a key piece waiting to be picked up. Yeah, right. "What do you mean too easy?" Dalia asked, already taking a step toward it. "Maybe we just got lucky for once." I grabbed her arm before she could go any further. "Dalia, stop. Think about this. See the other locations have deadly water spirits and a crazy mage who traps people in dreams. You really think we are just lucky to get the keys without a single problem?, this is obviously a trap." She hesitated, but I could see the impatience in her eyes. "Well, maybe this one is supposed to be easier? Like the goddess finally smiling down on us with some luck?" "It looks easy but I promise there's a catch." I said, trying to warn her off. The Cunning Forest was aptly named, apparently.

  • Selected By The Half-Blood Prince   21. Mad Mage II

MAEVE'S POV "What's wrong, sweetheart? You look like you've seen a ghost," my mom said, rushing to me with concern etched on her face. And then my father walked in, he was alive and whole, and grinning at me like he used to when I was small. "Happy early birthday, little star. Your mother's making your favorite." I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. They were here. They were alive and whole and smiling at me like the last few years had never happened. Like I hadn't been slaving away in Grimwell. I hadn't been branded a traitor's daughter. Hadn't been living carefully so I didn't get kicked out by my aunt. She was smiling like none of those things had happened at all... and I was losing my mind. "I thought we could have a little celebration," she continued, going back to pull out a pan of sweet cake from the oven. "Just the three of us, like old times." "But you're..." I started, then stopped. Did it matter? Did it truly? They were here. My parents were here and they loved me a
