Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Tough Tower
When the test results came back, the doctor called me into his office.

"Aria's coagulation function is very poor, and her platelet count is abnormal. She needs to be hospitalized for further tests. You'll need to put down a 20-thousand-dollar deposit first. If surgery is required later, the cost will go up."

I squeezed the report in my hand and paused before asking, "When's the deadline?"

"You have three days."

I handed over all my savings to the hospital, then applied for financial assistance.

I worked in the cafeteria by day and took shifts as a patient caregiver by night, getting three hours of sleep at most.

In the early morning of the second day, after turning over the elderly patient in the next bed, I straightened my aching back, only to spot Leyla standing at the end of the hallway.

She had changed into a black pantsuit, her long wavy hair draped over her shoulders. The cold white light fell across her striking features, making them look even sharper.

I ignored her and turned to head back to the ward.

"Jason."

The sharp click of Leyla's heels caught up with me as she slapped an agreement onto the nurse's station.

"Who are you putting on a show for?"

"I'm working. Move."

"Jason, you know damn well I won't stand by and watch Aria suffer, yet you refuse to ask me for help. You're just trying to force my hand so I'll offer more, aren't you?"

She tapped the agreement with a slender finger. "I can cover the medical bills, but the money won't pass through your hands.

"Kamryn will audit every expense. I will cover essential tests, but non-essential drugs are on you. You and Aria's daily meal budget cannot exceed ten dollars, and you have no right to withdraw the remaining funds."

I flipped to the final page and noticed Kamryn's name as the supervisor.

I pushed the agreement back toward her. "Kamryn doesn't even have a medical license. By what right does he get to decide what medication Aria takes?"

A flicker of impatience crossed Leyla's eyes. "He's just keeping expenses in check for me. If the doctor says it's necessary, he'll approve it."

Right as she said that, the elevator doors slid open.

Kamryn strode out. He wore a dark gray custom suit with sharp shoulders and a new watch on his wrist.

Walking over to Leyla, he cast a subtle glance my way and adjusted his cuffs.

"Ms. Saunders, the clothes for the banquet arrived. The watch and the suit came to 126 thousand dollars in total."

Leyla merely glanced at it. "Keep it if you like it. You don't need to inform me about minor things like this."

I didn't realize when Aria had woken up.

She stood barefoot at the doorway, her tiny frame swallowed by the oversized patient gown.

She looked at the watch on Kamryn's wrist, then down at the agreement in my hand. "Daddy, why can Mr. Benton buy a watch without asking anyone, but I have to get his permission to buy medicine?"

Leyla's expression froze for a second.

I crouched down and gently told her, "Sweetheart, we shouldn't feel entitled to other people's money."

Catching the sarcasm in my voice, Leyla pressed her lips into a tight line. "Jason, is that what you teach her?"

Kamryn stepped forward. His tall frame towered over me. His voice sounded warm, but his eyes held no warmth at all. "Mr. Kirk, stop throwing a fit. This isn't doing you or the kid any good. Just sign the agreement."

"I'm not signing."

I picked up Aria and turned to go back into the ward.

Right then, Kamryn suddenly staggered backward and slammed heavily into my shoulder.

Exhausted from days without rest and carrying Aria in my arms, I lost my balance. My back crashed straight into the glass door behind me.

With a loud crash, the glass shattered into pieces.

Before hitting the ground, I threw my arm over Aria to shield her. Shards sliced open my palm, and blood immediately dripped from my fingertips.

Luckily, Aria wasn't hurt. She scrambled out of my arms, and the sight of my bloody hand paled her face.

"Daddy!"

She rushed in front of me and spread her thin arms wide. "You bullies! Don't you dare hurt my daddy!"

A year later, Aria's condition entered a stable phase. On the day of her follow-up checkup, she wore her new school uniform, happily greeting every doctor and nurse she recognized along the way.Her platelet counts had returned to normal, and her medications could finally be gradually tapered down. The doctor gently patted her head. "You can go back to school from now on, but be careful when playing. No rough falls on purpose."Aria nodded earnestly. After stepping out of the consulting room, she told me she wanted to grab a drumstick at the hospital cafeteria. The cafeteria had been recently remodeled, with its tables and chairs swapped out for bright colors.I bought her a set meal, complete with a whole chicken drumstick resting on the plate. The moment she sat down, a little boy at the next table stared longingly at her plate, swallowing hard. The boy's father rummaged through all his pockets, managing to scrape together only a few loose coins before settling for a bowl of

The meeting was set up at the child psychology center.Inside the room sat a low table accompanied by a few colorful chairs, with the child psychologist remaining present the entire time.Leyla arrived half an hour early. When Aria walked through the door, she stood up instantly, yet made no move to step closer.Having not seen each other for half a year, Aria had grown a little taller, and her face had filled out with a bit of healthy weight. She wore a yellow jacket with a new strawberry hairpin tucked into her hair.It wasn't the one Leyla had bought.I sat by the door, taking no part in their conversation.Leyla placed a jigsaw puzzle box onto the table. "This is for you."Aria took a brief glance at it. "Daddy says I shouldn't just take things from strangers."Leyla's fingers paused mid-motion. "I'm not a stranger.""You're my biological mother, but we aren't familiar with each other," Aria said.Leyla's hand froze in midair. The psychologist softly reminded her, "Res

The weather was wonderful on the day Aria was discharged.Nurses and fellow patients all came to see her off.Holding a bouquet of paper flowers, she earnestly thanked every single person who had helped her.As she stepped out to the hospital entrance, she looked up at the sunlight, as if realizing for the very first time just how vast the sky outside really was.I bought an apartment not far from the hospital. It wasn't luxurious, but it featured two large bedrooms.Aria picked the room by the window, covering the walls with tiny suns she had drawn herself. She asked me, "Is this our home?""Yes," I replied."Nobody will drive us out?""Nobody.""And I won't need anyone's permission to buy medicine?"I stroked her hair softly. "Never again."She threw herself into my arms, her eyes crinkling into crescents as she smiled.Once we settled in, I took a portion of the recovered funds to set up an independent assistance program. The project wasn't named after me or Aria, nor

When Aria entered the second stage of her treatment, her reaction to the medication suddenly worsened. She ran a continuous high fever, threw up everything she ate, and her platelet count dropped once again. The doctor informed me that due to long-term malnutrition, her body was significantly weaker than that of kids her age. She wasn't responding well to certain medications, which meant her plan needed adjusting.I kept vigil outside the ICU without sleeping for two days straight. The head of the public charity project urged me to go back and rest. "The funding has already been taken care of, and the doctors are in consultation. You need to look after your own health first."I shook my head.Five years ago, when Aria lay all alone inside the operating room, no mother came rushing over, nor was there anyone to share the load with me.I didn't want her to wake up and not see her father. On the third day, the doctors proposed a new treatment regimen. The cost was higher than bef

The verdict came down two months later.Kamryn was sentenced to prison for asset embezzlement, document forgery, intentional harm, and infringement of personal information, and was ordered to return all illegal proceeds. The properties, vehicles, and bank accounts under Caleb's name were executed according to the law, while his overseas assets entered recovery proceedings. The court ruled that the five million dollars was never under my actual control, and those so-called overseas real estate and luxury purchases had zero connection to me.That ruling finally tore away the fake guilt that had crushed me for five years. The streamers who slandered us and the accounts that circulated Aria's medical records also received their judgments one after another. On top of paying damages, they were required to pin a public apology at the top of their accounts. The streamer who had blocked me at the hospital was the first to upload a video. This time around, he didn't hint at being a victi

Aria had stabilized by the day of the trial.Alvin stayed behind at the hospital to watch her, and I headed to the courthouse alone. The moment Kamryn was led in, his eyes instinctively drifted toward the gallery.Leyla was sitting in the very back row.He took just one glance before lowering his head. The prosecution presented the trail of the five million dollars, the forged account files, the restricted drug purchase records, the visitor logs, and the recovered photos. The doctor who had saved Aria back then also took the stand as a witness."When Aria was brought in, she was already suffering from severe bleeding and shock. Tests showed she had ingested an anticoagulant strictly prohibited for infants, in a dose large enough to cause severe clotting failure."The prosecutor asked, "What would have happened if she had arrived any later?"The doctor answered, "She could have died."The courtroom fell dead silent when my turn came to testify.I started from the time Aria wa
