Chapter 1

When the customer, Marvin Haas, heard what I said, he completely lost it.

Throwing his car keys onto the ground, he questioned, "What kind of training do you give your sales representatives? I bought the most expensive car you have, and yet this is how you treat me?"

Everyone in the showroom turned to look. A few customers who were in the middle of signing their contracts even put their pens down to come and check out the situation.

"What's going on? Why are they arguing?"

"I heard he bought the top-of-the-line model and came in for free servicing but got stopped at the door."

"Why wouldn't they let him in? What kind of messed-up rule is that?"

Seeing a crowd gathering, Marvin jabbed a finger in my face and yelled, "Everyone, it's this salesperson right here! He's the one who stopped me at the door, even though I had bought a car here and came for my free service!

"I paid four million dollars for that car! Four million dollars!"

The crowd broke into murmurs. "They won't service a four-million-dollar car? They have some nerve."

"I was actually planning to place an order today… Nah, I'm out. Who'd dare buy from them when they treat their customers like this?"

"Let's just go. I don't feel like watching. Let's check out a different dealership."

A couple of customers slammed the price lists in their hands on the desk before walking straight out the door.

The store manager, Anthony Harding, went pale. He shoved me aside and tried to usher Marvin in, coaxing, "Mr. Haas, please calm down. Come inside. I'll personally take care of everything!

"This guy doesn't know any better, so please don't take it personally!"

However, I got right in front of them. "No. He can't come inside."

Marvin, who had just barely calmed down, flew into a rage. "Are you out of your damn mind?"

Shaking off Anthony's hand, he stormed up to me.

"Who do you think you are? Do you even know who I am? Do you know how much I've spent here?"

His hot spit splattered onto my face, but I still refused to budge.

"I know you spent four million dollars here. You got the fully loaded G900 and paid in full. And you picked it up on the 15th of last month."

"Then, why are you blocking my way? I'm here for my free service! Free! It's clearly in the contract in black and white! What right do you have to keep me out? Get the hell out of my way!"

Marvin was beyond reason now. Refusing to waste another word on me, he tried to push his way inside.

I shoved him in the chest, causing him to stumble and almost fall over. The entire place fell into dead silence. Everyone was stunned.

A salesperson just shoved a customer? And not just any customer—a guy who'd just dropped four million dollars on a car?

Anthony's face went as white as a sheet. His lips quivered, but he couldn't say a single word.

After Marvin steadied himself, his eyes filled with shock and fury. "How dare you push me?"

Ignoring him, I pulled out my phone to call the police. "Engine failure. Protocol one."

Anthony stepped back to size the plaque up. "This is real premium branding. It's way more effective than any 'integrity in business' slogan."Saying nothing in response, I turned away to serve the next customer.Life went on as usual. I sold cars, delivered them, followed up with clients, and did whatever I needed to do.After Marvin's case entered the judicial process, I was called in twice for supplementary statements. Later, I heard he had been sentenced to death.I thought everything was finally over when I found out about that, but then a month later, a young woman showed up one afternoon. "Hello, are you looking for a car?"She shook her head, but then gave a small nod. Her eyes suddenly turned red. "Are you Julian?""I am."She pulled something from her bag and handed it to me with both hands. It was a pair of hand-knitted wool gloves."I'm Jane's sister," she said softly. "Paula Durham."I froze for a moment, hesitating to accept them. She added, "I texted you before.

Sitting in the corner, I sipped my beer. The wound on my arm still hurt a little.Right then, my phone buzzed. It was a WhatsApp message from an unknown number. The profile picture was of a young woman. "Hello, Mr. Manning. I am Jane Durham's sister. I just wanted to say thank you."Jane Durham was the woman who had been buried alive. I stared at the screen for a long time, not knowing what to say. In the end, I merely typed, "My condolences. Take care."I didn't get a reply after that.I flipped my phone face down on the table, then drained the rest of my beer in one go.…The next morning, when I arrived at the dealership, there was a car parked outside that I didn't recognize.Anthony was already at the entrance, wearing the kind of expression he only had when greeting high-level officials. "You're here."He walked over quickly upon seeing me. In a low voice, he said, "The precinct and district heads have been waiting for you for almost half an hour now.""Me?"Anthony pa

The first comment under the title read, "This salesman is a real hero."I stuffed my phone back in my pocket, deciding not to watch the video. I started the engine, the headlights lighting up the road ahead. For a moment, I thought back to the first day of my sales training. The person in charge of our training had said, "In sales, lesson one isn't about selling cars. It's about reading people."Back then, I assumed "reading people" meant figuring out who was actually going to buy and who was just browsing. But now, I realized there was a deeper meaning. Some people's money shouldn't be taken. Some people shouldn't be sold a car. And some people had to be stopped at the door. After that day, life seemed to go back to normal. That was until one night when my coworkers and I went out for dinner. My phone vibrated as a text message from an unknown number came in. "Is your car parked in the lot across the street?"Staring at the message, I felt a chill run down my spine. That parki

If Marvin had made it into the service bay that day, his G900 would've been thoroughly cleaned, inside and out, three times over.Every trace of his crimes would've been erased completely. By then, even if the police suspected him of anything, there would be nothing left to prove it.That was why I had to stop him.I had to make him panic, make him feel the urgency, and make him last out. I had to push the situation to the point where it couldn't be contained.Only by escalating things could the police be forced to pay attention to his car, and only then could the secret hidden in the trunk be brought into the light.…Three days later, the investigation report was released. That afternoon, I was in the showroom explaining the specifications of a G500 to a customer when Anthony rushed out of his office. He apologized to the customer, grabbed me, and pulled me into his office before closing the door behind us.On the desk was a report from the district's Criminal Investigation D

In the end, Marvin turned to look at me, his gaze sharp and vicious.I said nothing in response. Right then, Anthony walked over to my side. "So, what exactly did he do?"I was about to answer when my phone buzzed. It was a notice from the local precinct."A woman living alone in Bayview Residences on the east side has gone missing. Police found drag marks at the woman's doorstep. Surveillance footage from the residential area shows she was last seen getting into a black Mercedes G-Class SUV."I tapped the image. The license plate was obscured, but the model was clearly Marvin's G900.Anthony froze on the spot. "He… He…"I said in a low voice, "The reason he came in for servicing is to clean the trunk. There was once a person in there."Anthony's face went completely white. He whipped his head toward the G900."Anthony, remember when he came in last month to buy the car? He said he needed a trunk big enough to fit something precious to him."With a grave look, I watched Marvin

I abruptly stooped down, reaching into the trunk to probe around the hinges. There, I found a faint trace of dark-red residue that had dried in the joints of a hinge.Marvin had cleaned the trunk, but not thoroughly."Look here."Straightening up, I held out my fingertip for the officer to see. As he leaned in for a closer look, his eyes widened sharply. He immediately put on gloves before bending down to examine the hinge more closely."There are traces of residue."He muttered something into his radio, then looked up at me. "How did you know?""Because of that leakage from the gap."I wiped the blood from my brow. "If fluid was leaking out of the gap while the trunk was closed, then there had to have been a large volume of it inside. If it's clean now, there can only be two possibilities."Either nothing leaked in the first place, or someone's already cleaned it."The officer picked up my line of thought, the look in his eyes completely different now. Standing about ten feet
