The Stranger

Klaus’s fingers combed through his dark hair in a bid of frustration, while he tilted his head up to the night sky.

There were barely any stars in the sky which felt nostalgic, compared to how it was back home.

He’d been stuck at the port for over three hours already, supervising his goods in order to make sure none of them were stolen by the workers who’d been moving cargos all day. Although he could send someone else - he’d preferred to do it himself to ensure humans didn’t intrude, this rowdy business at all.

His kind was too untrustworthy to put complete faith in, especially whilst moving the cathodes which contained special contents and loads of cash too.

Their greed could cause them to loot a handful of goods in his absence, but his hearing was good enough to tell when any worker started moving off track.

And he couldn’t send humans, to supervise demons as they could get aggressive towards the human ordering them around, and if the latter got a bit too curious and decide to take a sneak peek at the goods, then all hell would let loose.

Pacing about the docks without straying too far away from his former standing, Klaus could hear the sounds of a few humans boats away but not close enough to cause a ruckus, and that was okay. They wouldn’t cause any harm that was for sure, and he liked the peace that came with this thought.

After staying in the demon realm for centuries, he’d wanted to have a taste of life as a human and hence he had left about a decade ago.

So far so good, he seemed to be having quiet a good time over here, ruling over his adversaries and trampling anything that came by his way.

Although unlike in the demon realm where power was everything - money and looks did it for humanity and Klaus had this in abundance.

So many women rushed to his bedside just from his appearance alone, but when they’d discover how wealthy he was…. A slight frown formed on his lips. ‘They’d flocked in like moths to a flame’.

At some point though, it had gotten quite irritating to see how easy it was to get females here and even though his demonic attribute might be Lust, something he couldn’t leave without, to be in and out of a woman daily was another thing.

However he still bedded them regardless. Always preferring smallish women with a little sass. The type that would give him a little headache and not plainly obey his every word - well excitement was a requirement for good living!

Another strange thing about the human realm which he had also come to notice, was how conflicts weren’t settled with brute force, but they had things called ‘courts of justice’ where the weak went to seek refuge.

Again the criminals were usually locked up instead of being killed, which was quite an odd ritual indeed…

He almost laughed at the thought of it. In the demon realm, one could kill anybody you wanted as long as you were ready to bear the consequences of angry relatives, and also provided that there was a good reason for that harm.

Most times, relatives didn’t even care and depending on your demonic rank, most demons got away easily with anything by just laying subtle mere threats and that was all.

Unlike him, he could do whatever he wanted though without seeking the validation of any freaking body. He was a primordial demon, and he had the embodiment of power as he was one of the strongest beings in the underworld. He feared no one and he was feared by most.

After his mother had passed away, his father hardly paid any attention to him and was always doing one bizarre thing or the other. The pressure of living under a powerful demon and being in his shadow was frustrating, and it was around that time those years ago that he’d decided to leave knowing that no one would attempt to stop him from doing so.

His hands raking through his hair, as he tried to discard the sad memories, Klaus face turned back toward the dark area which was barely lit up by the moonlight, and he was about to take a step forwards when something unfamiliar caught his ear.

It was the slow footsteps of a stranger.

“An intruder?” His brows furrowed, as he asked him down this question his feets carrying him forwards, as he he moved deeper into the darkness.

At first he didn’t see a thing, just hearing the tiptoeing footsteps and at first he didn’t see her, but then she finally appeared in his line of sight.

It was a young woman trying to hide desperately behind a stack of larger crates.

He watched her look around frantically through the darkness like she couldn’t make out the right direction, and Klaus stared bemused as he pondered what this lady was doing here.

Was she a human? He questioned himself, although it obvious that she was and taking silent footsteps, he walked slowly until he stood directly behind her.

At first he kept quiet, preparing his words and then he said, “What are you doing here woman?”

His raspy tone made her jerk away in shock, and the lady turned around and backed away slightly only to loose her footing and bump into the wooden crates stacked at her back.

“Who are you?” She asked back, trying to stand her ground at first so as not to come out as being too suspicious, but Klaus could already see behind the facade.

“You shouldn’t answer a question with a question, little girl.” He muttered, his eyes scanning down the human girl who seemed to be in her late teens.

18, 19 or even 20, he couldn’t quite put an age to her looks.

Although he couldn’t make out her face through the darkness, he could clearly see that blonde wavy hair which shone in stark contrast to the darkness that filled everywhere, and he could also tell attractive she was, just by inhaling her scent and the sound of her voice.

Wasn’t she scared of being out alone at night? What the hell was she even doing here? Suddenly a wave of unexplainable anger surged through Klaus.

Even demons could rape humans…. If she had been caught by someone else, by this time of the night, lord knows she would be manhandled so roughly.

“What are you doing here little girl?” Klaus repeated his question, his jaw greeting and finally she said something, straightening up and letting out a sigh as she spoke, “I’m looking for my big brother, okay!”

She turned her face away to act embarrassed, as she added, “I saw him go down the docks. I’m here to look for him.” She unknowingly pointed in the general direction Klaus came from, her face still bent.

“Ohh?” Klaus grimaced at her obvious lie. For a demon like him who was an incarnate of sin itself, it was quite easy to tell between truths and a lie.

He didn’t know why, but he could feel an aura of negativity around her like she was hiding a very deep secret, which he was surprisingly curious to find out.

And the fact that he could hear the quick pacing of her heartbeat, quirked his interest.

He took a step forwards, and when he was sure closer to her he leaned a bit forward, backing her little frame into a corner, and trapping her with one of his strong arms as he said, “I’m the supervisor here and haven’t seen anyone come down to the docks from that area. I can deduce that you are lying.”

Even with how close he was to this stranger, he still couldn’t make out her face, but then her breathing increased and he could tell she was already afraid of him.

He wanted that, and noticing her reaction, he lifted a finger and flicked a loose strand of hair that had fell down her face, an amused look on his face.

Once again, he was trying to get her intentions feeding into the aura that emitted from her, and even though it was negative filled with lies and a certain secret, Klaus was surprised when he suddenly felt something akin to lust, and his jaw tightened.

Was he the one emitting this aura, or he was making a mistake here.

They were still quite close, and the lady looked like she was not going to make a move at all, but then Klaus made the mistake of brushing her cheek and then she screamed.

More like half yelling, because her voice wasn’t too loud but she shook her head vigorously, and said to him, “Stay away! I’ll scream!” I’ll scream that you are trying to harm me, and I’m sure someone will hear me.” She called out in warning flinging her hands about defensively, while Klaus just looked on amusingly.

“Really?” He asked, a devious smirk forming on his lips, “I won’t trap you anymore.” He stood up straight and taking a step backwards from her he added, “Scream. You can scream all you want and see if anyone comes to your aid.”

Tucking his hands into his pocket, the familiar siren of one of his vans parked close by went off, and Klaus quickly turned around to check out what was happening as it was not yet time to move.

The damned siren which continued howling, was affecting his perfect hearing and he hated it. Just as he was was about to go check it, the siren stopped and he heaved a small sigh of relief.

The girl? He had completely forgotten about the woman he had entrapped just some seconds ago and he turned his face back to check on her, but then… She was gone like the wind...
