Chapter 6 Taking the Bait?

It was strangely quiet for a moment. The only sound was the continued ringing of the drums.

The atmosphere started to feel more aggressive.

Lin Mengya felt lucky she wore the red veil over her face, or she wasn’t sure if she could have handled all the eyes on her.

She could see how sharply they watched, but she couldn’t find a hint of explanation in any of them.

Long Tianyu looked at Lin Mengya sitting calmly in the sedan chair. He thought of her behaviors just now.

Was this really the girl he’d heard about? She seemed calm and clever.

More than that, his man reported that he saw her spit blood and die after eating some dates. How could she still be sitting here alive?

His man had been a secret guard for years. He never made mistakes. There was only one reason that she could have survived the poisoning.

It was silent for a long time, and Lin Mengya was becoming impatient.

Then she saw the red clothing approach. She’d been so calm a moment ago, but she suddenly felt unreasonably nervous.

Lin Mengya didn't know what he was going to do next. Her heartbeat sped up like a racing drumbeat.

She saw the man walk closer and stop by her side. Then a hand reached under her knees; the other hand moved behind her shoulder. In a moment, she was unexpectedly lifted into his arms. It was so fast Lin Mengya was afraid he’d change his mind and drop her.

She wobbled a bit, nearly falling out of his arms, and grabbed his neck for support. Long Tianyu froze and refrained himself from pushing her away. Then he recovered his composure.

Everyone's eyes stared at them, with mouths opened so wide they could swallow several dates at once. How could Prince Yu...

Lin Mengya recovered as well. Her lips lifted slightly, and she slowly shook her sleeves.

A few dates rolled onto the ground.

Feeling the tremble in his arms and seeing the dates on the floor, he knew she’d dropped them intentionally.

She was definitely not foolish.

Long Tianyu stopped walking and waited to see what the woman would do.

"Prince Yu, these dates were given to me in the hope we’d have children early,” she said in his ear. “They are from my younger sister. I still have two in my sleeves. Do you want to eat them?"

She dropped an arm from his neck and took out two fresh dates in front of him.

Long Tianyu felt his anger rise. The dates were highly toxic. He couldn't believe that this woman asked him to eat them.

However, thinking of how intentionally she’d shaken her sleeves, he realized she probably had some goal in mind, so he didn’t mind cooperating.

The crowd were shaking their heads and sighing, saying that the woman was indeed a fool who would be kicked out by Prince Yu.

"Alright," Prince Yu responded.

He opened his mouth, ready to eat one. The crowd was so shocked many began to wonder if Prince Yu had been bewitched.

Only Housekeeper Chen's face turned white. He was from the Lin family. He timidly stopped Prince Yu.

"Prince Yu, the dates can't be eaten," he said.

Housekeeper Chen had been filled with anxiety when the matchmaker had gotten caught. He feared she’d betray Lin Mengwu. When the danger had finally passed, he thought he could relax a bit, but this was even more frightening!

If Prince Yu took the poisoned dates, the whole Lin family, the queen, and crown prince would be implicated. He had to stop it.

Lin Mengya smirked faintly. They’d swallowed the bait just as readily as she’d expected.
