Mission

The sun rose up in the blue sky, birds singing, a refreshing cold air blowing in the beautiful city of Buna, the sun shined through a window in a certain house, waking up a sleeping woman, Maya, from her slumber, but she didn’t want to wake up so she put the covers over her head, trying to sleep more, when all of a sudden, she heard a grunt from beside her and someone flipping over.

Maya thought that, it must be her boyfriend, but wait she doesn’t have a boyfriend, she lives alone in a small apartment, where light doesn’t come that often, especially not in February, where is she? She slowly got up from her sleeping position, sat up and turned around to see, what she hopes was, a half-naked man, thankfully, not a completely naked one, because that would have been wild.

‘Okay, Maya, don’t freak out. But who the heck is this man? Did I have a one-night stand? No, I am sure I stayed home to watch a drama, I didn’t get out of the house, so where did this handsome guy come from? The sky?’

“No, he is your neighbor.” A voice said in a monotone tone, showing up out of the blue, right in front of her face.

Maya screamed at the top of her lungs, waking the man beside her, who told her to shut up and asked her what was wrong, with annoyance visible on his face, thinking it was his friend, sleeping next to him, who’s voice got high pitched for some reason, but when saw the face of the person next to him, he narrowed his eyes and tried to see if it’s really a woman in a very revealing dress by his side, or if he is merely dreaming.

“Who are you?” He asked confused, as a slight breeze blew, he shivered and realized he doesn’t have a shirt on. “What happened here?”

“I don't know, ask this.” Maya said, pointing at the weird object floating in front of them.

“I have a name, it’s Nova. I am here to explain to you both, your mission.”

  “What mission?” Lennon asked.

“Your mission to be a perfect married couple, give the male lead a good childhood and raise him into a fine, healthy young man.”

“Excuse me?” Maya said, titling her head.

“The child of this couple, you two.” Nova said, pointing at the both of them.

“But I am not married.” Lennon said, remembering that he never signed any marriage papers.

“And I was never pregnant before.” Maya never took a pregnancy test or even attempted to. She never thought about having a child either, so suddenly being told that she has a child, made her not only confused but also sigh in her head, because all she knows about children, are them being annoying all the time.

“Nobody said you were, the bodies you are in, are the couple. They both died last night, the wife with a sudden heart attack and the husband, his brain died. The male lead will supposedly go to an orphanage a week later but we realized that it’s not for the benefit of this world, that he goes there, so you both are his parents now, good luck.” Nova said, disappearing from the room, in thin air, not giving them a chance to react.

They both sat there in complete silence, until Maya sighed and decided to introduce herself, to try and lessen the tension, since they will be stuck together for months, maybe even years, so it's better to start interacting now.

“Maya.” Maya said, going for a handshake, while the man stared at her for a few seconds, before he extended his hand as well.

“Lennon.” Lennon said, with an awkward smile.

“You should wear a shirt.” Maya said, turning her head away from Lennon, before she starts blushing. She is not one to stare, but damn, he has a great body.

“Oh yeah. But where can I find a shirt in this room? It’s the size of my whole apartment.” Lennon said, looking around the big sized room, that was the same as a suite in a fancy hotel, in movies.

“I think it’s one of these doors, they probable have a room for a wardrobe.” Maya said, as Lennon went to open each door and the third one was the husband’s wardrobe, he got in and took a white shirt.

In the meanwhile, Maya found a file on her nightstand, titled Maya Freya, it had her first name but that wasn’t her last name, as she was about to open, someone knocked on the door, so she put it down and went to see who it was.

It was the couple’s three year old son, the male lead of this world and the child they have to take care of, but something was weird, he was looking down and slightly shivering, while stuttering and trying to form some words, after a couple of minutes, of Maya waiting for him to speak, crouching down and not knowing what to do, she never saw a child this small, she is an only child, he finally uttered one words, ‘hungry’.

Maya didn’t sense this at first, but this child is really scared of her, he is too skinny for a third year old, were these people feeding him? Its  such a big house, aren’t there supposed to be maids to take care of him, if his mother is not available?

When Lennon saw Maya standing at the door, he went to see what was happening, the moment he appeared, the child got even more nervous and apologized for asking for food, this early in the morning, 10 am, and left, walking downstairs, as they stared at him, fazed and confused.

To say the both were shocked will be an understatement, the hell did these parents do to their child? Did they take care of him at all? Why does he look so neglected and sad? They should really try to be good parents, no great parents, to make sure those years he lived in sadness, will all be replaced by absolute joy.
