CADEN

I had a bad feeling about Ryker leaving for Littlemoon last night. And it was no because I didn't trust his ability to defend himself and his people. But, I always worried. Ryker was quite selfless, and would lay down his life for his people. It was both a blessing and curse, more of a curse to me.

This worry had kept me awake, burning through several quantities of caffeinated beverages. When Calum had called me, informing me about several helicopters, and trucks leaving the pack en route to Littlemoon, my worry skyrocketed.

I paced about the heavily guarded mansion. I had tried reaching Ryker, but for some reason I wasn't able to get hold of him. Then I reached out to Reid, and just like Ryker, his line was not reachable either. After several attempts at other people who could be close to Ryker, and no success, I become restless.

The feeling that something might have happened to Ryker was enough to send me into full panic mode. So, I dialled Jerome. He sounded still, yet aler

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    37: DUTY

ALPHA RYKERAs I approached the door that led to the courtroom, I overheard a whole lot of noisy chatter. Two Elders were in a heated argument. When I pushed open the door to the room, the noise died down immediately. As I stepped in, the Elders quickly rose—a sign of reverence. I advanced towards my seat at the top of the table. Caden and Mason flanked both sides of it. They remained standing till I took my seat. A few introductory discussions, drinks and soon enough, the meeting went into full swing. The number of meetings weren't equivalent to the affairs of the pack. It was never enough, and we had a lot to debate on. I got new bills to be passed, new complaints, requests, and a whole lot of other issues that needed addressing. Then they deflected into the rescue of the last three Sentinels; congratulatory remarks, then the rumours surrounding the mission. “I heard the man's still unconscious”“He was poisoned with dark magic”“How did you know that?” “Who doesn't know?” Afte

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    36: THE BRUNETTE WITH GINGER ROOTS

ALPHA RYKER In the past three days, we had exerted energy and resources on healing Rueben, however the attempts all proved futile. He consistently slipped in and out of consciousness. And even when he was conscious for a few minutes, it didn't do much, as he could barely articulate anything. Each Salutary could barely detect the exact spell that was cast upon the poison, and the knife. And, the laboratory Anna had sent the blood samples to, had been unable to detect all the components combined to make this one potion. He was always sedated to prevent those spasmodic reactions, and had to undergo a series of rituals to keep the poison from destroying important organs in his body. The toxins had settled on eating the flesh within the wounds. And the Salutaris had used fire and coal to reduce how much of him the poison ate away. We were running out of time, and although I hadn't been awarded the opportunity to challenge it, Black Isle pack was the only option we had at the moment. I

ALPHA RYKER“Find the exit!” I ordered, and just then an explosive sound tore through the house. “Fire!” One of the men cried. Then as if the spell was broken, the smell of gasoline in the room became unbearably noticeable. “Find a window, shift and escape!” I commanded the men. “Can you walk?” I asked the men we had just untied. They nodded, struggling to their feet. “Tag, and be quick” I heard the fire move, consuming everything moving upwards, and towards us rapidly. “Alpha?” Zara called. “Now!” I ordered, lifting Reuben. She turned, running out. I ran through the hallways, fire swift behind us, then I caught a door, slightly opened. “This way!” I kicked the door open, ran into it and located the large window in the room. I heard sounds of broken glasses from other rooms ahead. “Hold onto me tightly,” I said to Rueben. The fire came up rapidly, engulfing the room. I jumped out the window simultaneously, landing on the gravelled floor. Pain shot through me. Rueben rolled off my

ALPHA RYKER “You did what?!” I thundered, my anger swift.“It's just a little time before she'll start facing harassment. I had your interest at heart” he defended. “My interest?” What the fuck? He went behind my back, orchestrated a full security team and plan without my permission, evidently hinting on some assurance, and then returned to tell me he did it for me. Lauren had been distraught, and her grandfather looked like he could explode. I had walked out, uninterested in sparring with the old man, but I knew his clap back would be hard. “You defied me!” He'd roared. Well, I was defied first, every other thing was as a result of the dynamo effect. “She is your mate, so yes” Caden's words brought me from my detour. Why was I pissed again? Right. He defied me.“Talk about double standards!” I turned away from him as I secured my ballistic vest. “ Didn't it occur to you that Lauren deserved a security team too?” I asked him. His eyes hardened at this. He disliked her, and he d

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    32: HOW QUICK THE WORLD TILTS.

XAVIERA From the moment I ran into the Alpha last night, I knew the balance I was beginning to find again would tilt. Ever since the incident that sent me far away from home occurred years back, I had avoided the spotlight as much as I could. I hated bringing attention to myself. This world was quite a small place, and the pack responsible for the trouble I was in were alive and lurking, even if I didn't know who they really were. The Crescent moon which had become my respite, and shield from my burdensome past had now placed me in the very position I had tried to avoid. The moment I got home last night, I had quickly gotten out of my dress, freshened up and had settled for Mac and cheese. Anna had come in much later, and I had pretended to be asleep when she came to my room. Adeline and Leesa had rang me non stop until I decided to switch off my phone. Much later, I overheard Anna informing them I was fine and asleep. Last night was too much to take in all at once, and I needed the

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    31: BEGINNING OF THE AFTERMATH

ALPHA RYKERI stood on the balcony of my room, overlooking the garden below, watching the sun rise. A cup of coffee laced with brandy sat warm in my hands. I hadn’t slept a wink last night; Too many thoughts had kept me awake, and I wasn't a fan of pills. I watched the round resplendent globe rise slowly, dispelling darkness of the night and casting a golden glow over everything within its focus. I turned away from the sight of it, back to my chair. My laptop sat booted and running on the glass table. I had used work to past time, hoping sleep would come along the line, but it didn't. A lot had happened in the past few weeks, and even if I had trained myself never to worry over things that were out of my control, it was tough to ignore how incessantly out of control things were becoming. Firstly, the dark moon pack kept on infiltrating our pack, murdering and kidnapping, and the more we tightened security measures, the more the casualties. It was as if they could walk through anythi

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    30: THE GODDESS' PLAY

BETA CADENLife is never stagnant, I'm quite aware of that. But sometimes, the way it moves is quite surprising. That also goes without saying life is full of surprises, and in one night, I'd been hit with two of it—two powerful curve balls. Ryker, who had never believed in mates, and had planned his life without the appearance of one, had been given a mate. And not not just any other, but the woman that had piqued my interest. A woman he obviously didn't want. Everyone was astonished for several reasons. Ryker, because he'd been placed in a precarious position by tonight's happening. Xaviera, as any woman in her situation ought to be, was terrified and astonished, which was justified. My mother wasn't just elated, but relieved. And she had enough reasons to be. I was relieved, but not elated. I had my game set, and the goddess had played her hand. I stood in the crowd, watching them dance, tension oozed heavily between them, and a knot tightened in my chest. They both didn't want

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    29: THE REJECTION

XAVIERAStillness. That was the first reaction the world offered to this unfathomable revelation. Everything stilled for a few seconds, then continued quite slowly. The moon spilled over us. Snow-like trasculescent flakes dropped from the sky bathing us in its beauty. I however couldn't enjoy the moondusts as I did previous years, being in the centre of it, nonetheless. My mind was too preoccupied to actually enjoy the ‘peak’ of the festival as Adeline would describe it. Turns out our definition of peak had been altered tonight. I stood dazed, unable to process what had just happened, and the implications of what it meant. The man before me seemed equally stunned, but aside from shock, there was hard disbelief. I became very much aware of the continuous gasps and murmurings around us, we weren't the only ones in disbelief. There was also curiosity, and the question they so badly wanted answers to was “who is she?” Who was I?I had been mated to the insanely gorgeous Alpha Ryker of t
