ONE MINUTE

Part One

She didn't say anything.

Alexander straightened up slowly, still breathing hard, and waited. Mia looked at him through the glass. Then she turned and went back to her desk.

He walked to his own. He sat down. The printer hummed beside him.

He lasted until ten.

At ten he stood, crossed the floor, and stopped outside her door. It was open. She was reading something on her laptop.

He knocked on the frame.

"Yes?"

"Do you have a minute?"

She didn't look up. "Is it about work?"

"Sort of."

"Sort of."

"It's about this morning."

She closed the laptop and looked at him.

"Come in."

He came in and stood in front of the desk. He didn't sit. He had learned that much, at least.

"I was late," he said.

"I noticed."

"By one minute."

"I noticed that too."

"I'm sorry."

Mia tilted her head. "I didn't say anything."

"I know."

"I didn't write you up. I didn't tell Daniel. I didn't even look at the clock."

"You looked at the clock."

"Fine. I looked at the clock."

"That's why I'm here," he said. "You said no special treatment. Everyone else gets in trouble when they're late. If I don't, that's special treatment."

She stared at him for a moment.

"You came in here to ask me to punish you?"

"I came in to apologize."

"For one minute."

"For the rule."

"The rule." She almost smiled. She caught it, and it went away. "The rule is seven forty-five. You've been here at six every morning this week."

"Not today."

"No. Not today."

"I want to be on time," he said. "It matters to me. I'd like to be the person who's on time."

"Alexander."

"Yes?"

"What happened?"

He let out a breath. "I took the subway."

"You took the subway."

"I took the wrong one. For six stops."

There was a long pause.

Mia put her hand over her mouth. Her shoulders shook once. He realized, with real surprise, that she was trying not to laugh.

"I'm sorry," she said through her fingers. "It's not funny."

"It's a little funny."

"Six stops?"

"I ended up under a bridge."

She lowered her hand. Her eyes were bright. She looked, for a moment, like someone he used to know.

"It happens to everyone," she said. "The first week."

"Did it happen to you?"

"I got off at the end of the line and had to call a friend to come get me."

"You had a friend?"

"I had one." The corner of her mouth moved. "She still does it. Mentions it."

He didn't say anything. He didn't want to break whatever this was.

She seemed to notice at the same moment. The smile faded. She picked up her pen.

"The rule stays," she said. "Seven forty-five."

"Understood."

"You were one minute late. I'm not going to do anything about it."

"But…"

"This time."

He nodded slowly.

"Thank you."

"You don't need to thank me."

"Then I'll just…" He gestured vaguely at the door.

"Go."

He went. He was halfway across the floor before he realized he'd been smiling.

Part Two

The subway home was easier.

He checked the number on the front of the train three times. He counted the stops out loud under his breath. When the doors opened at his station, he stepped out with a quiet, stubborn kind of pride.

It was a small thing. It was the smallest thing. He thought about it all the way up the stairs.

The evening was cold. A thin rain had started, just enough to make the pavement shine. The hotel sign flickered at the end of the block, and his shoes squelched a little with each step.

He was a few doors away when he saw her.

A woman stood under the awning, beside the entrance. She was tall, with pale hair pinned up, and a long camel coat that looked expensive even in bad light. She held a small black umbrella. She wasn't looking at her phone. She was looking at the street, the way people look when they've been waiting a while.

He slowed down.

Then he stopped.

She turned her head. She saw him. For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then she smiled, the same polished, practiced smile he had seen at a hundred dinners.

"Hello, Alexander," Victoria said.

LATE NIGHT Part OneAcross the city, Mia was still at her desk.It was nine o'clock. The floor outside her office had gone dark an hour ago. She had a spreadsheet open on one screen, an email draft on the other, and a cold cup of tea that she had forgotten about at five. She rubbed her eyes and kept typing.A knock came at the glass."Mia."She didn't look up. "I'm busy.""I can see that.""Then you know.""I brought food."That made her look up.Ethan stood in the doorway with a paper bag in one hand and a drink carrier in the other. He had taken off his tie. His sleeves were rolled up. He looked like he'd been there as long as she had, which he probably had."What kind of food?""The kind from the place on Fifty-Second.""The noodles?""The noodles."She closed her laptop halfway. "You're a bad influence.""You're welcome."He came in, cleared a space on the desk without being asked, and set out two containers. The smell filled the room, garlic and ginger and something sweet. Her s

NO THANKSPart One"Papers. Old files. Anything from before."Alexander didn't answer. He looked at Victoria sitting in the orange chair with her hands folded in her lap and her smile held perfectly still."Why?" he asked."Why what?""Why do you want to know?""I told you. I'm trying to help.""How does asking about files help me?""Because they might." She said it easily, as if it were obvious. "If you've got something from before, a record, a note, a copy of anything, it could be useful. My father's lawyers are very good. They could look at it.""Your father's lawyers.""Yes.""The same ones who called me two months ago to say the engagement was over.""They were doing their job.""And now they want to help me.""Not them. Me." She leaned forward a little. "Alexander. You're in trouble. Real trouble. They're going to take you to court. I don't want to see you go through that without any support.""How do you know about the court?""Everyone knows.""I haven't told anyone.""It was

VICTORIA Part One"Hello, Alexander."He didn't answer right away. Rain dripped from the edge of the awning and landed in a dark line on the pavement."Victoria.""You look tired.""I've had a long day.""I can see that." Her eyes moved over his coat, his shoes, the bag over his shoulder. She did it quickly, the way she'd always looked at a room. "You look like you've been running.""Something like that.""May I?"She tilted her umbrella to make space. He stepped under the awning but stayed an arm's length away."How did you find me?" he asked."It wasn't hard.""Nobody knows I'm here.""I asked around." She smiled a little. "People like to talk to me. You know that.""What do you want?""Can't I just want to see you?""No."She laughed softly. It was her real laugh, light and quick, and for a second it reminded him of the early days, before the galas and the guest lists and the careful way they had always spoken to each other. Then it stopped."All right," she said. "I'll be honest.

THE SUBWAY Part OneAlexander didn't know she had been there. He finished the page he was working on at five fifty-five, saved it, and rubbed his eyes. It was still dark outside. His feet hurt. He had walked forty minutes to get here, because a cab was too expensive and he hadn't yet figured out the subway. He looked down at his shoes. The left one had a small hole in the sole."Right," he said to the empty floor. "Enough."He took out his phone and opened the map. It showed a red line and a green line and a blue one, all tangled like string. He stared at it for a long time. The next morning he left the hotel at five. It was still dark. The station was a block away, down a flight of dirty stairs that smelled like rain and metal. He stopped in front of a machine. It had a screen. It had a slot. It had a lot of buttons and none of them said what he needed."Single ride," he read out loud. "Unlimited. Reduced fare. Refill." He frowned. "What does refill mean?""It means you put money on

DANIEL TALKSPart OneMia stared at the cup.Milk. No sugar. She turned it slowly on the desk, as if the answer might be written on the side. She had never told him. She had never told anyone at this company, except one person, and that was in her first month, when the whole team was still small enough to fit around one table. She picked up her phone and typed a message.Come to my office when you get in.The reply came in under a minute.I'm already here. Two minutes. She put the phone down and waited. She didn't drink the coffee. She just looked at it.There was a knock."Come in."Daniel came in with a folder and a careful face. He shut the door behind him and stayed near it."Morning.""Sit down.""I'll stand.""Daniel. Sit."He sat.She pushed the cup an inch across the desk."Did you tell him?"Daniel looked at the cup. He looked at her."Tell him what?""How I take my coffee."He let out a long breath. "Yes.""Why?""He asked.""He asked.""After the meeting yesterday. He found
